Every time AO3 makes an update, there’s a chorus of ‘and can we please please please be able to leave kudos on each chapter pleeeeease?!?!’
In theory, this is a nice idea. We’ve all smashed the kudos button on our favourite fics, bemoaning the fact we can’t give them all the love.
But ya’ll, kudos per chapter would absolutely fucking suck.
For readers, it would suck because it would compound the existing problem of making it hard to find fics that are good and not just long - not that a fic can’t be both! But there are plenty of Pulitzer-worthy one-shots out there that are buried way way down the list when ranked by number of kudos, because they’re beneath a bunch of 50/? fics where the author lost sight of where the hell the story was going 30 chapters ago, but their fic has had 50x the chances to be viewed so has more kudos. It would encourage authors to release their fics in lots of little chapters instead of a few longer ones/one-shots as they might otherwise have done (and as might otherwise suit the story).
And for authors it would especially suck, as it would compound the existing problem of people not commenting. Kudos are very much appreciated, but comments make an author’s day; but so few people bother, and frankly, it’s disheartening. Let people just click a button to show their appreciation for each new chapter? The hits:kudos:comments ratio would get even worse than it already is.
You can already ‘give kudos’ for each chapter of a fic on AO3 - by commenting. Hell you can literally write ‘kudos!’ It will make the author smile, I promise.

zdzisław beksiński, dystopian world of living and death
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beksiński made his paintings and drawings in what he called either a Baroque or a Gothic manner, with his strong impressionism on war and sorrow in his era by depicting it into utopian realism with strong doomsday-like-paintings. (A mind trash of Avery and her unbearable thoughts).
As he claimed "I wish to paint in such a manner as if I were photographing dreams." Really resonated well in my mind, sort of the revelation of each overthinking ideas and the suffering of each troubled minds, but depicted well in the-great-depression era, let alone the infamous painting of him talking about the infamous sole nazi leader, with red hue and piercing eyes drawn in great facade of elegant greco-roman architecture war (coughs, yes, hitler).
His paintings were dominantly (not all, but some) used the prussian blue hue, which, matching to my likings, yet have gruesome background in that era. Prussic acid also known as hydrogen cyanide, that most of the time left blue hues in asylums and chambers that are used for the mass k wording method in that era.

Meghann Riepenhoff, Littoral Drift Nearshore #209, 2015, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
His painting also reminded me of cyanotype printing method, though. As it was the most ‘knocked-out-painted-realism-out-of-a-photographs’, it was often latent, or invisible but requiring a chemical to visualize the image. Two different method but same vision, visualization of the utopian ideas of the realism itself.
Actually, his paintings were giving haruki murakami’s mind boggling dystopian type of painting, maybe that’s why it’s fun to stare at his works, because it’s like imagining, and manifesting Murakami’s work into life.

My one and only, my lifeline.
₊˚๑ Summary: There’s these times when JJ feels like he’s drowning in the deep end. Sometimes Kiara lets him hold onto her, like a lifeline.
₊˚๑ Word count: 5k
₊˚๑ synopsis:
“If you keep the shirt and learn to accept that that shitty memory is just that, a shitty memory and nothing more, then you’ll grow as a person. Healing is not just about moving on, it’s also acceptance.” She holds his gaze head on, “accepting that you need to let go of that memory and not let it hold you down.” Or else it’ll drown you. Goes unspoken but it hangs between them in the air, dangling over JJ’s head.
She directs her attention to the boring movie again, “when you think about that shitty day, you just gotta find something to hold onto, like a lifeline.” She whispers it so softly, JJ melts at her voice.
₊˚๑ Read now on ao3!

i love that specific ao3 phenomenon where you get a sudden influx of kudos on a work and it’s clear someone shared your fic but you have no idea who they are or where they shared it. it’s like being a dickensian orphan receiving money from a mysterious benefactor.

BEFORE WRITING: Oh, this fic idea is so cute, and it won't take any time at all! WHILE WRITING: Oh...oh, no...I Underestimated this. Again.
