The Balance.
a tarot spread for mabon.
When you find yourself at a crossroad, and don’t know which way to go, search for The High Priestess.
You’re in a relationship and don’t know if you should stay with this person or leave.
You have to make a choice between one job or another.
You’re in school, and are torn between whether you should stay with your current major or choose another one.
Should you stay where you are or move to a new town?
When you can’t find a clear answer, shuffle your cards, turn them face side up, and seek guidance from The High Priestess. She is the first card of your reading. She is the balance between positivity and negativity. Struggle and tranquility. Darkness and the light. The two cards in your deck that precede her are the second and third cards in your reading. The two cards that follow her are the fourth and fifth.
Two and three represent one path, four and five represent the other. Cards two and four are things that will come in the near future. Three and five are things you can expect to find further along in your journey, depending of course upon which path you choose.

Queen of Coins. Art by Celeste Pille, from The American Renaissance Tarot.
“Setting: Alexandria, Virginia, where Jacobs set up a school and provided aid to orphans and former slaves following the Civil War.“ — Thea Wirsching
Please meet our Queen of Coins, Harriet Jacobs, whose incredible story of escape from slavery is told over several of the Coins cards. Here she is pictured in one of the many orphanages she managed during the Reconstruction period. She and her adult daughter also made ends meet by making and selling preserves. Slave records show that Jacobs was born in summer and so we’ve paid homage to the sign of Virgo in this card. Virgo is associated with an ethic of service, and Jacobs spent her life speaking out on behalf of her sisters still in bondage.” — Thea Wirsching

Our Card of the Day: The Hierophant
The first words that come to mind are tradition, dedication, servitude.
The Hierophant embodies the growth that comes with dedicated practice. There are no shortcuts, and sometimes we have to step out of our comfort zones to reach our goals.
The Hierophant can also represent a teacher. This could a person in your life that you look to for guidance, or could even be you. If you feel a calling to educate and share your knowledge, whatever the subject may be, now is the time to start pursuing that calling.
This card also embodies tradition. Traditions have been in place for so long because they work. It may be time that you are looking for a new study or new work to dedicate your time to. But don't forget about the systems already in place. They're put there for a reason.

I created this as a general "letting go" spread, without a specific situation in mind so that you could customize it to fit your needs.
This spread has been useful during my shadow work recently because I was having a lot of trouble coming to terms with letting go of my past and allowing myself to move from it. However, you could use this spread to help you let go of a relationship (romantic, professional, platonic etc), let go of what you can't control, let go of a former version of yourself and much more. It's a pretty basic and simply spread but I find those ones to be the most revealing and eye opening, for me personally.

I have an electric lighter. I don’t need gas, matches, or anything but electricity to light a candle. It’s rechargeable and I love it. The only thing about it is, I don’t feel comfortable using it to light my candles and it can’t light my incense sticks. So what do I do?
I use tea lights. I have a tea light candle holder that I keep on my altar as I’m working. It is the first thing I light when I’m ready to start working. I use the tea light to light my candle, my incense stick, and to symbolize the fire element if I need it to. I also snuff it out and use the melted wax to coat my cork to plug my spell jars. It’s a lot less messy than using my candlestick to seal my jar, though I can generally switch between the two methods. Traditionally, I’ll seal with my candlestick, but if I don’t want it to get messy, I’ll use the tea light wax to seal.
I have a ton of tea lights and I don’t particularly want to use them for my general spell work because they aren’t very good for dripping wax without burning yourself.
I know a lot of witches would rather use matches or something more natural for their witchcraft, but I don’t like the smell of lit matches and I also get scared when trying to light them. Plus I have a lot of candles in jars and matches scare me lol. I found it on Amazon after watching a TikTok and I thought it was a lot better than having to buy lighters and matches all the time.
I love my electric lighter and I’m not going back to matches and gas lighters ever again.
