some people think writers are so eloquent and good with words, but the reality is that we can sit there with our fingers on the keyboard going, “what’s the word for non-sunlight lighting? Like, fake lighting?” and for ten minutes, all our brain will supply is “unofficial”, and we know that’s not the right word, but it’s the only word we can come up with…until finally it’s like our face got smashed into a brick wall and we remember the word we want is “artificial”.

titling wips - prompts and examples
the name of an important character (Hamlet, Shakespeare)
an important place (ACOTAR, S.J.M.)
a summary / foreshadowing of the plot (the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, C.S.L.; Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, L.C.)
look at other titles from the genre -> currently a popular layout in YA fantasy is "a ______ of ______"
choose one word that summarizes nearly everything (Divergent, V.R.)
the name of a place or event (Caraval, Stephanie Garber)
a recurring theme (Twilight, Stephenie Meyer)
a quote (These Violent Delights, Chloe Gong)
literary devices -> alliteration (The Great Gatsby, F.S.F.) -> rhetoric (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, P.K.D.) -> allusion (Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea, Chelsea Handler)
what stands out? can you put that into words?
remember that titles will change with time—Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen) was once named First Impressions, and War and Peace (Leo Tolstoy) named All's Well that Ends Well
the time of the setting of the novel (Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell)
enough of the ending to spike curiosity in the reader (They Both Die at the End, Adam Silvera)
a rare word that describes the book
use a general title then a subtitle
think of the title being as much of a hook as the first line. would you rather read Caraval or Magic Fair?
be specific—Mystery of the Iron Mask VS the Mystery of the Man in the Iron Mask (E. H.-J.)

27 for Micah, Cade, Flint, Ella, Liam, and anyone else you’d like to answer it for
27) What are their opinions on children? Do they view children as sweet angels or evil crotch goblins?
Okay anon I see you *squint*
Micah - Loves kids. Great with kids, kids love him, he’s a sweetheart who will drop everything to take care of a kid.
Cade - Doesn’t really interact with kids? Views them as little balls of chaos, but generally keeps his distance, they’re hardly anywhere near as interesting as adults.
Flint - Children are nuisances. They touch everything on the shelves and put things where they shouldn’t go and break things recklessly. Children are irritating and hindering and they do their best to ignore them.
Ella - Hasn’t ever met a child! She would probably love kids, but find them a little high energy. She only knows about kids from books and would likely be interested but surprised by the ways they act.
Liam - Is very kind, patient, and good with kids. He’s quiet and rule-oriented so he’s not always the most liked adult, but he’s fantastic at taking care of children. He views kids with hesitant emotional distance- he was raised to believe he’s supposed to have kids, a wife, a white picket fence. Trying to live his life the way that he wants to, the thought of having children of his own leaves him feeling defensive.

Flint with #40? -🐞
40) Your character's friend has just been mugged. What's their reaction? Most Likely they would pull out some modified weapon and taze the mugger to retrieve the taken money, then carry on as if nothing happened.

9 for Micah?
9) What is your character's trigger point? What makes them angry, sad or makes them go off?
Mm it depends! Bigotry, especially towards someone else- not particularly directed at himself, but when it comes to defending others he's all about throwing himself fully into it and Definitely has started a bar fight before defending a stranger.
#Micah Baird#Ask Game#OCs#Writing#I'm very sorry for taking so long to respond! I'm an idiot who doesn't check notifications!!#Thank you for the ask regardless!

A part of us all belongs to the wild.
When you doubt your place you can feel it’s call
In the tug of your hair by a spring breeze
Or a harsh gust that curls between your ribs and pulls.
It’s in a longing for fog filled farmlands with swaying grasses and dew laced willows
Or the ebb and flow of waves, beckoning but always coming up short.
It’s the dappled patterns of scattered sunlight on a forest floor
Or the resonance of summer rain tapping on the pane and asking to be let in.
It’s the warmth wrought from sunlit cement under bare feet
Or the bite of frost on your toes as you stand in awe of endless stars.
It’s in the urge to climb a rocky outcropping
And traverse a side trail beneath the trees
It’s in all the little ways the woods remind us we are not alone,
The wind whispers our names,
The sea reaches for our hands.
We belong in the places, the moments, the fractions of seconds
The pieces that no one else will ever experience the way we have.
The moments that are just for us.

😢☕️🎲
😢 a line that made you cry
Okay so this didn’t make me cry but it is the first thing I thought of, s o
Red. Staining the wall and the floor and their hands, clasped tightly at long last. Halos of blond and black tainted with it, dripping.
That would be from my Les Ami’s poem style ficlet called Red and Green
☕️ favourite passage
This is from a roleplay I did a long time ago, from the perspective of one of my OCs. It’s pretty alright to be honest, and I go reread it frequently. Warning for u h drowning!
Pain flares through their system, eyes flashing as the thief’s own lips draw into an even brighter grin at the word. If they had the air they might even laugh at his frustration, despite the agony slowly tearing them apart.
You can’t break me, writer.
Agony and exhaustion take hold and the figure is fading fast. Abandoned in the shadows, their home - their life now turned against them. Even here they’re in their element, even now, punctured and broken and battered from head to toe, they manage to wrangle a win.
I did that job a long time ago.
Air and blood flood from the thief’s lungs as water rushes to fill in the empty space, a sound that would have been a strangled gasp choked out by the suffocatingly clear liquid draining through them.
The world slowly begins to grey out, shadowed water painted with crimson. Shattered and fear filled eyes slide shut at last, the ghost of a smirk still settled on the traveller’s thin lips.
🎲 your favourite chapter/part from a multiparty series
I! Don’t actually have any,,, series or anything that I’ve written because I’m y’know, like, the worst. But I will take this time to suggest giving @tulipscomeinallsortsofcolors Sanders Sides au a read! It’s called Love And Other Fairytales and it’s absolutely fantastic. My favourite has to be the oneshot Favor, for...reasons. https://tulipscomeinallsortsofcolors.tumblr.com/post/185771832940/favor

The crash of the waves on the rocky beach or the sound of small motor boats - the bustle of the marina just past the walls of your home. Small town diners, restaurants on docks, fish and chips shops, that food truck that’s been in the same place so long plants have grown around the tires. Tidepooling and beach combing - wasting time in the most beautiful ways. The salty, seaweed smell brought in by the thick fog that blocks out the rest of civilization as you sit on the deck in the bath, listening to the patter of the incoming storm. Kelp under your toes, beach glass, shells, drift wood - all brought in by the rough tides and harsh winds. The cool, fresh smell of rain when the heat’s been oppressive, pattering against the steamed over windows. Warm lighting and a cup of something hot and sweet, curled up in a favourite chair with a book in your lap and that one bookmark you got on vacation years ago. A typewriter on a wooden desk, backlit by the gentle sunlight from the open window. Fresh seafood, boiled and served with melted butter - savoury and comforting all at once. The creaking of an old wood pier, the support beams encased in barnacles, muscles, and other beautiful sea life. Glass bottle green rivers, clear all the way to the smooth rocks beneath the surface. A warm breeze that carries the summery scent of blackberry bushes. Unironically owning a Volkswagen. Listening to good music and talking to good people. Playing cards by candlelight to take shelter from the billowing winds accompanying the downpour just outside the window. A sun warmed, rain soaked banister on the edge of the patio. The brisk, dewy cold that can only be felt just before dawn. Dark country roads lit only by the occasional amber glow of an old street lamp. Cool, damp grass, the echo of crickets, the distant rumble of frogs, the brilliantly bright constellations in the midnight blue sky. Parchment and quills, the sound of pencils on paper, the fresh smoothness of hotel sheets. Hoodie sleeves rolled up to your elbows, mismatched socks, sweat pants, worn out runners, an old snapback. Blue raspberry candies, old books, dark highways with music blaring out of open windows. Leather jackets, fluffy socks, fingerless gloves, tattoo designs.
