Personally, what works effectively here is the juxtaposition of her emotionlessness and imagery of blood, with the beautiful aesthetic of every shot. The set built with vines and roses are just beautiful and Lee Hi does a great job of lip syncing melancholily throughout.

As the title “Rose” might imply, the video presents themes such as Love, heartbreak and obsession. The main message of the song is the old adage: “every rose has it’s thorn”.

Sa Min Ha uses a white, red and pink palette, and the titular rose aesthetic to present the song’s themes in the video. For example, there is a white wolf, symbolic of loyalty and especially guardianship. This paragon of protection reflects Lee Hi’s message about protecting yourself from the pains of love, rejection and heartbreak.

The various imagery of soldiers and vines, represent love as a battlefield and something that may hurt. The gentle colours, work with the light pop beat to give off a sincere ode to this sense of heartbreak. The mood and tone are melancholic and lonesome, but also serene and hopeful in a way. Perhaps the intent of this is to build up false hope, which reflects what Lee Hi has experienced, and thus resulted in her defence against and warning to others of, the dangers of love.

The video exhibits a multitude of thought beats, especially in the pre chorus and chorus with the snare drums in the track. This represents the quickening of the pace of the heartbeat due to the effects of love and heart break. There are also multiple flash cuts that reflect the confusion and euphoria of love. Here, the the music video amplifies and illustrates the song’s message: be careful around love. There is a slight narrative here, the soldier has broken Lee Hi’s heart and so she is trapped by her heartbreak, and is thus reluctant to open up to anyone else, depicted by the entanglement of vines she resides in.

Sa Min Ha constructs Lee Hi’s image to be the personification of a rose itself. She is like a rose; beautiful but she may hurt you with her thorns - her emotional weaponry. She is comparable to a rose nymph, who is trying to protect her heart from others, and others from her heart. We thus sympathise with the young maiden and adore her beauty.

Codes and conventions used here include: bright lighting to represent love in a positive light which contrasts with the melancholy of the lyrics; a proliferation of close-ups which show the expressionless Lee Hi, to depict her as someone who knows the sorrow of heartbreak as well as adding to her star image; a small dancing group, as per the conventions of any Kpop music video; and the simplification of a song about love, shown by focussing on a single beautiful subject, which in this case Lee Hi, a young female juxtaposed with a beautiful crown, to depict her as a queen of roses, of love.
