What are some common Italian slang terms?

They usually depend on the region, but I’ll write some in general:

1) We use some terms which can be translated with “dude”:

Amico (literally “friend”), fratello (it’s the same concept of “bro”), and recently have been added two other words, vecchio (literally “old person”), which is a funny term people use with very close friends, and rega, which is plural (referred to many friends), and is the short and distorted version of the word “ragazzi” (guys). 

2) Slang for not-so-good-and-healthy things:

-“To get drunk” is literally translated with “ubriacarsi”, but a slang term is “sbronzarsi”. Being drunk is “essere sbrozo”. A hungover is “dopo-sbronza” (“after-being drunk”)

-“To smoke weed” (literally “fumare erba”): “farsi una canna”

-“Being high” (literally “essere drogati”): “essere in botta”

3) Adjectives for physical appearance:

- “Hot,sexy”: “figo” or “gnocco” (for a boy), “figa” or “gnocca” for a girl.

- “Ugly”: “cesso” (which literally means “toilet”)

WARNING: these two are not polite expressions!

Then, there are other particular terms, like

- “Essere fuori”: literally “being out”, means “being crazy”

-“Bigiare”: “to skip lessons”

- “Lecchino” (or “leccaculo”): literally “ass licker”, is “a person who does favors for someone more powerful just to get benefits or promotions”

- “Primino” (term of endearment for “primo”, which means “first”): “kid in the first year of elementary/middle/high school”. Kids in the first year are seen as “cute babies that must be protected at all costs!” XD

- “Terroni” (not polite word): derogatory and very rude term referred to people from South Italy, very used by Northern people. Word used due to the strong relationship of the Southern part of the peninsula with farming. The word comes from “terra”, which means earth. 

- “Polentoni” (not polite either): the “revenge” of Southern people against the North. The term means “polenta eater”, and it’s used because polenta is a very popular dish in the North. 

Sadly, rivalry between North and South still exists. 

-When something rocks, it “spacca” (literally “breaks”)

- “Di brutto” is an informal expression which replaces “very, really”. 

“Brutto” literally means “ugly”.

Then, there are some untranslatable expressions:

- “Boh”: “I don’t know”

- “Ahi”: That hurt!”

- “Mah”: when you can’t express an opinion concerning a topic because it’s too ridiculous or sad. 

- “Eh?”: “I don’t understand”

- “Che palle/Che due maroni (swearing word)”: When something is upsetting, boring or annoying you.
