3. "Great balls o' fire" - Chapter 3
summary: Emilia meets the boys and finds out a lot more about what it takes to be the best.
-
The two girls hop out of Phoenix's car - Emilia's ruby red motorcycle still not having arrived yet.
"God it's cold" Emilia says as she hugs her arm around her waist, her hair blowing in the wind.
"if you aren't sticking to uniform anyway, you might at well wear a coat" Phoenix laughs.
"not sticking to uniform?" Emilia turns to look at her newfound friend in confusion.
"your hair, it's not tied up" she answers.
"some rules are made to me broken, so long as it's not in my eyes when i'm flying the plane - it shouldn't be anyones issue" Emilia answers, her flaming locks of ginger hair float around her head.
"i love your hair by the way, you'd be easy to pick out of a crowd - good in case you crash" the brunette girl says as they reach the door of the bar. Emilia laughs and agrees, hoping it would never come to that...
"It's so nice in here" Emilia says, raising her voice so Natasha can hear her over the non-sensical chatter of the buzzing bar.
She takes in the warm colours of the place and looks around to see lots of pilots in their own uniforms, some sporting more charms than others and some having special badges with their names on.
The actual bar in the middle glows yellow and the kind looking woman running it laughs in pure amusement at something her seemingly familiar customers have said.
"yeah it is, when i was going through the academy here before we all got moved on to different bases to do missions, this used to be the ultimate location to be. everyone uses to come here. it was great" Phoenix says as she looks around the place.
"do you miss it, being in the academy?" The redhead questions the brunette, turning to look at her.
"i guess i miss some of the people but i prefer my missions now - they are much more enjoyable" she says and Emilia agrees with her.
"Do you miss England?" Phoenix asks.
"I haven't been here long enough yet, i suppose i will though"
"Hey boys, look who it is!" Phoenix seems to recognise this voice as her head immediately perks up.
"Hangman!" She calls across the bar pointing her arms cooly at the boy.
"come on" she says, grabbing Emilia's hand before she gets to chance to object.
The girls come to a stop once they reach the emerald green pool table.
"How've you been Phoenix?" the tanned, and very muscular blond boy smirks at Emilia's new found best friend.
She observes as the brunette smiles coyly at the man, the two of the old friends flowing into a somewhat flirty conversation as Emilia takes the opportunity to look around the other men gathered around the games table.
She nods at a few of the boys as they smile back at her, one boy in particular seeming very shy and avoiding her gaze.
Her movement must have distracted the blonde boy as all of a sudden, he turns to the ginger.
"And who do we have here?" Hangman says to Emilia.
"I'm Emilia, it's nice to meet you I suppose" the girl says nonchalantly, never really having time for boisterous men like this one, regardless of how shy she can get in social surroundings
"Ohh feisty redhead and English - lives up to the reputation 'i suppose'" The blonde mocks her. "I'm Hangman, but if we are on a first name basis already, call me Jake"
"Hangman, leave her alone. She just doesn't have a nickname yet because they don't do that in England" Phoenix attempts to stop the tormenting.
"No, instead we actually get on with flying instead of worrying about silly little nicknames" Emilia says, unwilling to insult everyone there but with minimal information on the blonde, she had way else to shut him up.
"anyway, im off to get a drink, you need anything?" The girl, now somewhat embarrassed about her hair questions her friend but getting a head shake and pitiful look in return.
With that, Emilia walks away to the bar.
She takes a seat next to a man in a leather jacket, badges are sewn on to the tough and worn fabric of it and he fiddles nervously with a coaster on the wood of the bar.
"what can i get for you, hon?" the lady says, her face looking aged but none the less, everything Emilia wishes she would be in the future.
"A beer please" The English girl says, her accent clearly surprising both the man next to her and the woman in front although the man seems to cover his face more and more the closer the lady gets.
"Sure, no problem" She turns around and begins getting the glass and filling it will the amber liquid.
Emilia can't help but notice the bell and sign hanging up on the further side of the bar.
"There you are dear, that will be three dollars please" Emilia raises her eyebrows at the low cost before handing the coins to the kind lady.
"I like the bell and the sign - it's a great concept" She says to the woman behind the bar.
"Yeah it's great, the boys are all lovely enough to help throw the gross men out if they disrespect me too many times" The woman says. "I'm Penny"
"i'm Emilia, it's a really cool feminist movement- i like it" The ginger looks at Penny with admiration.
Penny returns the favour "you putting on that uniform is far more of a feminist movement than i could ever pull" and those both of them laugh as Emilia nods in gratitude.
"let's see if this man does anything" Penny says winking at the younger girl before turning to the man.
She seems to stop and turn as pale as a ghost as the man sits somewhat shyly.
"hey?" Penny says, her voice a bit breathy.
Emilia sits there, worried for her new friend. She keeps an eye on her just in case.
"You look good" is the part where Emilia's attention is bought back to the older pairs long conversation.
Penny turns to the younger girl and both of their eyes are open wide.
"Oh no!" Emilia says laughing, the girl now so much happier and comfortable than she was before.
Penny laughs whilst looking at the man as she rings the bell.
The place erupts into cheers and Phoenix and her friends cheer the loudest whilst thanking the man.
He looks awfully confused until Penny directs his eyes to the sign where he reads it and his face automatically falls into disappointment.
Penny looks at you expectantly.
"Hey, rules are rules!" Emilia says gleefully, gladly taking Penny's role and educating the man.
He looks at Emilia before laughing and pulling out his card.
"fine" he's says, looking at both women before him.
"Right well, i'm off but i have no doubt i'll see the both of you again" Emilia smiles brightly before picking up her beer and bidding the older pair goodbye.
Emilia joins the group of friends by the pool table, a new found confidence surrounding her now she's had a few glugs of beer and a polite conversation.
"I'm a fucking professional at pool, so if you don't mind..." the ginger girl takes the pool stick from one of the boys she saw earlier and waits for him to say his name.
"coyote..." the boys smiles at her, smirking actually.
Emilia can't help but giggle "...coyote, im taking your place"
Hangman and the other boys whistle at her confidence, obviously taking a liking to her teasing personality.
It's at this moment she realises someone new has joined.
One of the most beautiful men she's ever seen and she can't help but stop for a second.
"hey?" the boy questions as Emilia stares at him, his wall seeming more built up than the others.
"Hello, Im Emilia" the girl stretches her hand out to him.
The boy adorned in sunglasses and toothpick perched between his teeth meets her hand half way, giving it a firm and short shake.
Their eyes don't leave each other's for a while before he looks away.
"I'm Rooster" He says before walking over to the piano in the far right corner of the bar, near the large window panes exposing the beach's bad sunset to all partygoers within.
"As we were" Emilia says before taking aim and hitting the first ball on the table."
As she does, the bell rings again and Emilia can only cheer is delight at the promise of a free drink as the boys around Emilia and Phoenix ditch their sticks and head over to lift the man out the door.
Everyone then vacates with their free drinks over to the piano where Rooster begins to play 'Great Balls of Fire'.
Emilia smiles, somehow , she already feels at home.

2. "i'll pretend i didnt hear that" - Chapter 2
summary: Emilia moves in with her new roommate and discovers the world of Top gun.
-
Emilia walked with nothing but poise as she followed the large man in front of her.
Nothing but a few polite engagements made during the course of finding her room as she clutched her bags in her hand and allowed the harsh footsteps from the shined black boots the Admiral adorned to echo in her ears.
After a short walk across the many tarmac runways, they pair entered a large grey brick building with black painted doors and large windows marking each of the many floors.
The Admiral led her up the plethora of stairs until they reached a pale blue door on one of the higher floors, there he knocked on the door and hesitated.
"Who is it?" The two of you heard a soft voice call from within the room.
"Admiral Warlock" The large man called back.
Nothing was said until a girl with tanned skin and brown hair cascading down her shoulders pulled the door open.
She stood up straight in a similar way Emilia had just minutes before as she stood in front of the most important man in the naval aircraft industry.
"Yes Sir?" The girl questioned.
"This is Emilia Wright. She's your roommate whilst you stay here. I apologise but at this specific base we have limited female dormitories-" the man was shortly interrupted by a scoff from the girl beside him.
He turned, stumped but not surprised.
"I'll pretend i didn't hear that" he says and Emilia thanked whoever was above as she swore the noise escaped her mouth before she'd even had the chance to refrain it.
The girl holding the door open smirked at the other girl in front of her before returning her face to normal and facing the Admiral.
"Yes Sir" The Admiral nodded before promptly turning and walking away.
Emilia let's her eyes follow the man until he's gone.
"Few, i thought i'd be in trouble then" Emilia says to the girl in front of her in an attempt to break some ice.
"No way, you're British! That's awesome" The brunette girl says, "I'm Natasha Trace but you can call me Phoenix" she says sweetly, stepping out the way of the door so you can enter the room.
"Phoenix?" Emilia turns her head towards Natasha in confusion.
The brunette girl's mouth drops "you don't have nicknames in the regiments in England" she questions.
"Not really, our nicknames were our surnames." The Wright girl says.
"and i quite liked mine as even if i said something completely ludicrous regarding my teammates, they had to say i was right as they had to address my surname first" she continues with a little laugh.
"that's brilliant! I now know you have a good personality and we are going to be friends for life. i would take advantage of that name too for sure. we need to get you a nickname but i feel i should wait to name you until we find out why the hell we are actually here" Phoenix says.
"i think i can't wait a little longer" Emilia returns before the two girls begin unpacking their bags.
After half an hour flies by - the girls giggling constantly as they flood the spacious room with their clothes and belongings on their double bed and draws in their respective half of the room - a knock on the door startles them from getting to know each other.
"Gather in the bar downstairs - you all need to know of each other" a voice calls out from behind the door, the two girls look at each other before calling affirmatives at one of the Admirals in the base.
"uniforms to be worn, please ladies" the man says before walking away.
"damn, i was really excited to wear my underwear downstairs ugh!" Phoenix says and Emilia can't help but laugh.
"well, there's no time like the present."

“Welcome to Top gun” - Chapter One.
summary: Emilia Weight joins the elite squad for one more highly intense mission.
———————————-🛬—————————————
"Good morning, Miss Wright" the captain guarding the door just slightly to the left of him says as he nods his head sharply.
Emilia Wright can do no more than muster a strong smile and offer a firm hand to greet him in return.
He looks at her outstretched hands, her finger nails painted a soft peach with thin lines of white skilfully drawn on top, before looking her straight in the eye.
He purposely ignores her polite gesture and turns instantly to face the door, his brashness surprises her slightly as she feels his strong presence next to her before he twists the brass doorknob to the right and waves her in through the door.
The girl has no room for embarrassment and by some miracle, the blush she thought to appear on her cheeks never arrives.
Emilia might not be familiar with the American military system and certainly not familiar with Topgun, however she had had previously undergone lessons in severe discipline when regarding higher ranks and so she held her shoulders high and faced the man perched in his leather chair.
The admiral sits expectantly, his stare so strong that regardless of where you may be within the labyrinth of halls in this grand naval base, you could certainly feel it upon you.
"Emilia Wright, I presume" The admiral husks out in his firm voice, his tone having no ounce of question leading Emilia to believe that regardless of weather he got her name right or not, she wouldn't correct him.
"Correct, Sir" she musters, her usual confident persona shining through.
"Take a seat" he offers, pointing to the rather neglected looking chair to right of his desk.
The chair looks to have not been touched in years so she presumed that no one else has been sat in it as of recent.
"No, thank you" she says, eye contact never wavering as her hands cross behind her back.
The admiral looks at her, squints even.
"Very well."
The girl feels slightly proud of herself as she realise it impresses the Admiral, if no one else had sat in it- she wouldn't either.
"I take it you understand why you are here" The admiral nods at the younger girl.
"To some extent, yes" she answers him, her shoulders perched perfectly straight.
"Good, that's all you are due to know" The man says, stroking the ends of his seemingly corse moustache.
A furrow forms between her eyebrows but Emilia knows better than the question him.
"Will that be all, Sir?" She asks, her somewhat sophisticated English accent thick on her tongue.
"Indeed, follow Admiral Warlock - he'll take you to your room" The man says, standing up and walking towards the young girl.
He reaches his hand out and Emilia shakes it gladly.
"Welcome to Topgun, Emilia Wright."
