was recently in a conversation about Crying During RotE (sorry it's a Jey's text posts kind of day) and nothing got me harder than the Fool's Fate breakup. Which seems insane given the end of the entire series but my god. By that point I was so stressed and afraid that it had propelled me into an out of body state galactically beyond tears. the breakup though. after ALL OF THAT. I was not ok

me: truly a well crafted tragedy is such a bittersweet pleasure to take in and serves a purpose, not just as a sad story but as a reminder that even that which ends badly might not have happened in vain or for nothing. The love, the grief, the actions still meant something simply for having taken place and for us partaking in it.

3:30 am urgent thought but I’ve been doing Fool Studies for reasons which will become clear and I want to note that one thing I enjoy about modern media fools is. The Fool is a disabled person whose special societal role nevertheless traps them in legal minority. And sometimes in fantasy they literalize that developmental arrest with magic.

Right now I can think of two examples. Robin Hobb’s Fool has a supernaturally extended lifetime in which he remains youthful for the entirety of the narrative while others age past him. Thistle has been elf 14 for a thousand years and even if he hadn’t accidentally trapped himself in sleeping beauty’s monster dungeon he STILL would have aged slower than everyone around him. In real life fools were any person of any age but the pop culture Fool is the Rider-Waite tarot perpetual adolescent. His* disability is made invisible by the symbolism of the Holy Innocent, who has to look pretty because Innocent is Good is Pretty. But it’s still there because if you’re magically on a different developmental timeline than everyone else that BECOMES a disability that real media understanders can notice!!! AND I DO.

*irl court fools were sometimes women but not as often as they were men. the concept of The Fool that I see most often in fantasies is an effeminate masculine (The Fool is gender fluid but because we see him most through Fitz who is wildly uncomfortable around all women, even women who are men, he’s presented as primarily male. Thistle is an elf. Tanith Lee has an effeminate court jester in Flat Earth because of course she fucking does.)

(Thistle and the Fool are both examples of magical foreigners who arrived as children, btw, and they both have like Mystical Knowledge that does not actually emotionally equip them for idk anything really. Gnawing on the idea that if you acquire a child who is inscrutable to you for some reason you can just slap a stupid hat on him and deny him access to the social role of Adult forever. This will cause no problems for anyone at any point in any narrative )
