Writing Tip June 4th

A list of body language phrases.

I’ve included a very comprehensive list, organized by the type of body movement, hand and arm movements, facial expressions etc. In some cases, a phrase fits more than one heading, so it may appear twice. Possible emotions are given after each BL phrase unless the emotion is indicated within the phrase. (They are underlined for emphasis, not due to a hyperlink.)

Note: I’ve included a few body postures and body conditions as they are non-verbal testimony to the character’s physical condition.

Eyes, Brows and Forehead

arched a sly brow:  sly, haughty

blinked owlishly:  just waking, focusing, needs glasses

brows bumped together in a scowl:  worried, disapproving, irritated

brows knitted in a frown: worried, disapproval, thoughtful

bug-eyed:  surprised, fear, horror

cocky wink and confident smile:  over confidence, arrogant, good humor, sexy humor

eyes burned with hatred: besides hatred this might suggest maniacal feelings

eyes flashed: fury, defiance, lust, promise, seduction

eyes rolled skyward: disbelief, distrust, humor

forehead puckered:  thoughtful, worried, irritation

gaze dipped to her décolletage: sexual interest, attraction, lust

long-legged strides:  hurried, impatient

lumbered across:  heavy steps of a big man in a hurry

minced her way up to him: timid, sneaky, insecure, dainty or pretense at dainty

paced/prowled the halls:  worried, worried impatience, impatient, diligently seeking pivoted on his heel and took off:  mistaken and changes direction, following orders, hurried, abrupt change of mind, angry retreat

Translate emotions into written body language

We are always told to use body language in our writing. Sometimes, it’s easier said than written. I decided to create these cheat sheets to help you show a character’s state of mind. Obviously, a character may exhibit a number of these behaviours. For example, he may be shocked and angry, or shocked and happy. Use these combinations as needed.

The Top Five Tips For Using Body Language

Use body language to add depth to dialogue. 

Use it because more than 50% of human communication is non-verbal.

Use it to show how your character’s emotions affect his or her actions.

Use it to help you show rather than tell your reader everything.

Use it in moderation. If overused, it can slow your story down.

catching up with the cunninghams

hey glitter fam!

welcome to day 2 of our site buzz! we’re inching closer to our official discord buzz and site opening, and we can’t even handle our excitement. there’s been some amazing engagement so far, and we’re pumped to bring this second challenge to y’all.

but before we do, we wanted to update real quick that our official discord buzz that we previously announced would be starting on the 17th, will now be starting on saturday the 16th instead! (: 

so without further ado, today we bring to you a character inspo challenge!! for this challenge, we want to get to know your characters somehow! it can be through a mood board, a pretty graphic, a blurb… pretty much whatever your heart desires. everyone will have until tuesday the 19th @ 3pm pst to complete this challenge, and it will carry over onto our discord buzz. at the end, we will pick 3 people who we thought did a great job, and they will get to choose one of 3 prizes! the prizes you can win are listed below:
