me: i don’t want to see jellyfish so i will blacklist the tag #jellyfish
people with no common sense: je11yf1sh, je11¥fi5h, j*llyf*sh, je//ÿf!sh, j3ï||yf¡sh, gel lee fisk
result: cannot account for the sheer amount of possible ways to alter the word jellyfish
conclusion: i have to see jellyfish now.
Once again, tumblr is not tiktok, tag properly.

I just know that when Romeo and Juliet premiered two ye olde girlies in the pit at intermission were like didst thou see the sparks betwixt Tybalt and mercutio… aye and not from their swords alone!

No, taking that shower, eating that meal, cleaning your space, going on that walk or having that conversation won't cure you, but there's a good chance it'll make you less miserable in the moment - and isn't that a fine goal by itself?

Which of these would you rather see on your dash?
Hey @staff. This is a perfect example of why collapsed reblogs is such a bad idea. Seeing the full thread, you go like this: 😮 ooh, that's cool 😀 "they're free," hehe! 🤣 "16 cents," perfection!!
I have achieved joy, I feel positive feelings toward Tumblr, I want to engage, I want to stay, my eyeballs land on more ads, you make more money, everyone wins! 🎉
Seeing the collapsed thread, you go like this:
😮 ooh, that's cool 😐 "16 cents"? yes, that's literally what the pic shows, not sure why you felt the need to say that
There is no motivation for me to uncollapse the reblog chain—it looks like a boring conversation about the denominations of coins. And even if I do uncollapse it, you've ruined the joke by showing me the punchline before the setup. I am sad, Tumblr is boring, I go elsewhere to entertain myself, I see less ads, you make less money, everyone loses. 😥
Reblog chains are the best thing about Tumblr. They are your unique super power. They are the thing that makes people screenshot Tumblr and share it around. Why on earth would you kneecap them??
I don't know exactly how you plan to implement this. Give people the option to keep them collapsed if there truly are people who are annoyed by how long they can get (you already have a version of this feature), but don't collapse them for everyone or new users by default. Please. It will make Tumblr so much more boring.

the running idea in pure heroine of the moment spiralling out of reach even while you're still in it. "but we know it's not forever" in tennis court. teenagehood is such a fleeting moment but it is everything when you're in it. "i know we're not everlasting / we're a trainwreck waiting to happen" in a world alone. those two being the opening and closing tracks on the regular album. "there'll never be enough of us" (buzzcut season) + "that will never be enough" (ribs). you can't slow down time you can't capture it you can't go backwards and you certainly can't repeat the past. "we could talk it so good we can make it so divine we can talk it good how we wish it would be all the time" this one really has been rotating today because it really is enshrining a moment in your memory making it divine we can talk it good how we wish it would be all the time!!! it can't be like this all the time but oh we wish it would!!!! promise i can stay good...

melodrama is for the people who don't mean half the things they say. melodrama is for the people who pluck their eye makeup out of their lashes the morning after. it is for the ones who get the urge to cut off the people they love, for the people who secretly think their friends are full of shit. melodrama is for the people who love for the thrill of it and romanticize the high. melodrama is for the people who don't have any tangible problems but blow up everything in their minds, the ones who feel their problems are invalid. melodrama is for the ones who hate being called dramatic. it is for the ones who don't have talent because they are never the best, who want to grow but are scared of aging, who relate to everyone but still feel lonely.
melodrama is for the ones who are insecure about their anger. melodrama is for the ones who aren't good enough for their friends. it is for the hypocrites, the ones who value reciprocation but aren't good with affection. melodrama is for the easily distracted, the ones in denial. it is for the ones who don't feel their lives revolving around them, for the ones who recognize "home" but have never had one. it is for the ones who want to feel like themselves again. melodrama strikes the dangerous balance; it is for the cynics, the romantics, the stable, the unhinged, the dramatics, the detached, the self-centered, self-loathing, the selfish and selfless, the undefinable. melodrama is for the constellations of contradictions.

lets talk about KOSA
i havent seen any posts about it on my dash, and i think this is really important because it puts Tumblr as well as queer/minority creators on this platform at risk. since i have a lot of queer mutuals, i want to make sure you all are informed.
KOSA (Kids Online Safety Act) is being presented to Congress this upcoming month. its being presented as a way to "protect teens/children and their mental health online by regulating content online". however, it puts queer/minority creators and their content at risk of being totally censored. sites like TikTok, Ao3/Wattpad, Tumblr, and essentially anything that gives queer people a significant platform online is at risk of being deleted/wiped or censored into oblivion. under the guise of "kids mental health" this act would heavily restrict queer people and their voices online.
what can you do?
this linktree provides resources to help you take action and protect queer voices online from KOSA. please take the time to do what you can. if you spend any amount of time on Tumblr and value any of the queer voices you have access to on this platform, take action.

I watched the live with the CEO, here is the tl;dr
The good news:
Chronological dash is here to stay! Whether you have to toggle it weekly or new users default to “For you” was not elaborated on but at least that’s confirmed.
Custom themes are here to stay! Once again, may be buried for all I know but, for sure will remain an option.
Search updates are in the works!!!!
The neutral news:
Tumblr is seriously in the red financially and needs more support, Ad-free for example is not widely used
They would not comment on the suggestion to bring back NSFW behind a paywall (which we all know would get them a boatload of money)
They’re possibly going to add a donation system like Ao3 and Wikipedia.
They would “rather not” sell data to make up the costs
Most of staff are pre-2010 tumblr users including the CEO who joined in 2007, so they do actually use the site and have for a long time
The bad news:
Condensed reblogs/removing reblog chains is going forward. The reason cited was to meet “certain expectations” of users coming from other social media, which isn’t good.
Disability features (specifically turning off flashing ads for epileptics) was met with a request to purchase Ad-free
Overall it was more chill than I expected, @photomatt and @zingring seem to be far more in tune with the userbase than u/spez.

here's my hot take about my generation and people younger than me (I'm 22 years old)
The reason current teenagers and people in their really early 20s are conservative on accident and have such shitty takes on the internet is because our generation was much more sheltered than previous generations and because we were raised to be ok with orwellian servailence and that is 100% the fault of our parents, Reagan Era kidnapping panics, and the rise of technology all coming together to prevent us from doing the sketchy shit that sends parents into panic mode but which is also completely fundemental to childhood development. If your parents had even a crumb of money to their name and even a shred of free time they started tracking your phone as soon as it was possible to. I did not experience this because my parents are actively trying to live like it's the 1990s and still have not gotten cell phones of their own, and did not let me have one until I was 18 years old and it was no longer their choice, but literally over half of my friends in middle and high school had their phones tracked by their parents at some point or other, and we would occasionally find this out, not because their parents told them, but when we were trying to do the aforementioned sketchy shit and their parent's car would pull up. And I would, like a reasonable person after finding this out, encourage my friends to just leave their phones at home, and their response would be "What if I get kidnapped" or "My parents are just trying to keep me safe"
This in my estimation has lead to a combination of kids being terminally online because they do have internet access and are better at deleting search history than their parents think they are, but don't have the freedom to go out and do shit without their parents' knowledge or consent, so they have the most privacy from the people who control their lives while they're on the internet, and kids not having the real world experiences they should have, not knowing how to connect with other people irl, not feeling comfortable leaving the house because of the horror story lies their parents told them to make them ok with the surveillance they were inflicting on their kids. Kids these days are growing up in the fucking panopticon when they should be out in the woods playing with knives or stealing cigarettes from their older sibling and going out to an empty parking lot to smoke them or whatever and that shit is sticking with them into adulthood. Things that were "tee hee we could get in trouble isn't this so fun and daring" in the 1990s and 2000s have become in the 2010s and 2020s things that are "If I do that without texting my parents some sort of lie to excuse where my location is my parent's car will pull up and I will get grounded for the next two weeks."
Like even when I was 19 I had a 16 year old friend who would volunteer their time at a food shelf and that's how we knew each other. We would talk about dungeons and dragons together, and the game store was 4 blocks from the food shelf. One day we left the food shelf earlier than they had told their parents they would and they got punished for that. We were literally just going to look at dungeons and dragons miniatures and dice, which was self evident if you could see where we started and how far we walked and where too. I have to assume that this isn't uncommon. It's wrong, but it's not uncommon.

Now that I work with a bunch of homophobes, I feel the weight of being a 'one of us.'
"Why are women so --- oh but not you, you're different."
"Why are gays so--' but you're not like them, you're more like us."
Krusty The Bird Killer rants for five minutes about black women being 'sluts that all have eight kids with different fathers because they'll lay with anything that moves,' and then talk sweet to our secretary, a black woman in her 40s who doesnt seem to count as a black woman when he's ranting.
I've been trying to put words to this behavior for awhile now. And I think it just comes down to 'us vs them.'
I showed up to work in a cowboy hat and work boots, wasnt afraid of the men's room, and lifted a 50 pound trash bag full of dog shit on my first day. I'm not like other women to them. I dont count. I'm one of us.
I talk about my girlfriend in a quiet way: I dont declare queer supremacy and I dont make my whole life about being queer and oppressed. I'm not like other lesbians. I dont count. I'm one of us.
They dont know me. They dont know my girly interests and they dont know about my political art pieces and they dont know about the fake eyelashes that I wore during pride. They certainly dont know I'm trans.
I passed their test. I'm 'one of the dudes.'
I'm really not, though.
If they saw me outside of work, I would be a Them. But they got to know me first. I'm in their list of "thems that are us." And every them that they meet can be an us. But they dont go out of their way to meet many thems.
I'm a Gay. I'm not the Gays. I'm (to them) a woman. I'm not Women. The secretary is black. But shes not The Blacks (pardon the phrasing, it hurt me to even type it that way.)
Every person is the stereotype of their group until someone gets to know them. But that doesn't disprove the stereotype- it just means that the person doesnt count as part of that group anymore. They're with us now.
Respectability politics really dont get us anywhere. If you're out to disprove the stereotype out of a sense that you'll change their minds, I'm telling you that energy is better spent living authentically if you are safe to do so.
Your influence on them doesnt change their perception of the box they put you in. They just put you in a smaller box. Fuck their opinions.
