The Clone Wars were the perfect Jedi trap. By fighting at all, the Jedi lost.

The one tcw episode where Hondo is collecting hostages as if they’re Pokémon cards:
Anakin: hostage or not, sometimes it’s nice being held
Obi-Wan: …
Dooku: have you never hugged your padawan, Obi-Wan?
Obi-Wan: oh please, as if you ever hugged Qui-Gon
Dooku: it’s not my fault he was always covered in dirt

thinking about names as they relate to the jedi post-genocide.
ben kenobi has one foot in tatooine and another still in that old life. his mission may have changed, but he is still a jedi. he still has a job to do.
ahsoka tano stopped thinking of herself as a jedi long before the empire rose. yet her name seems to doom her--ahsoka tano is a jedi, to the clones, to other survivors. maybe that is why when she hides, she hides with parts of herself--ashla as a reminder of the friends she lost, fulcrum as an understanding of the role she must play in a galaxy without jedi.
cal kestis does not try to hide, cannot try to hide because cal kestis will always be a scared child clutching a too-big lightsaber, falling through the sky.
kanan jarrus buries caleb dume as deep as he can--hides his name, hides his instincts and everything he was taught to be. tries to become the opposite. except a jedi by any other name is still a jedi. call him cowboy, gunslinger, spectre, but underneath all that is still a heart of kyber.

This gifset going around again of Obi-Wan in the bar got me thinking. The line is that "the Force has a strong influence on the weak-minded", and the general consensus is that this is some failure of the target's constitution or even genetics.
That consensus always sat poorly with me. What if that isn't what's going on?
I'm going to focus only on the Lucas-run media here because that's the core source material.
So think about it: when mind tricks work or don't work in the OT and Prequels, what's happening between the Jedi and their target?
Tumblr media
First ever instance. The target is a stormtrooper (and their squad) who have been made to wander around the most godsawful desert planet in the galaxy and pester people about their droids. They've probably been loomed at threateningly by half a dozen bigger aliens, had to fend off opportunistic scrap dealers offering refurbished roombas, it's hot as balls, and they have sand in places they didn't know existed. This guy is bored, distracted, probably wondering why it fucking matters so much, and they just want to go back into the shade and get some water. They aren't keenly focused on their target, and Obi-Wan has already played into their exasperated expectations by offering to sell the droids. This mind trick works because the stormtrooper doesn't care.
Tumblr media
Second time we see a mind trick, it's in Jabba's palace, and this is a complicated scene, because there are levels of manipulation going on. Luke is trying to weigh the expectations of the entire room, after putting a choke on the door guards, dressed in black on fuckin Tatooine. Half the hangers-on in the room are already intimidated by him, including the majordomo, and when Luke says "I must be allowed to speak" it works on them; but not on Jabba, who is not intimidated, already pissed off that Luke was allowed in, and believes he has the upper hand. There's a general assumption that Luke's next demands are a failed mind trick, but consider that he's trying to piss off Jabba -- whose reputation this Tatooine sand rat Jedi would absolutely know -- enough to get him out of the security of his palace for an execution.
Tumblr media
Boss Nass. This guy is already irritated, both by these Jedi suggesting the Gungans should care about the Naboo (not getting into the never-discussed issue of the Naboo having colonized the planet and the Gungans being ignored by the Republic until this point, but there's a long and unpleasant history here), and by JarJar daring to come back with said Jedi. Ugh. He wants the Jedi and JarJar gone and he doesn't care how it happens. Give them a ship? Fuck, sure, if it gets them out of Otoh Gunga. Oh, they want the troublemaker too? They're more than welcome to him. The council has more important things to deal with, and Qui-Gon's influence is doing hardly any work at all.
Tumblr media
Watto, on the other hand, is not so easily distracted, and this is the first time we see real failure. Qui-Gon is desperate enough to try to get Watto to take their useless Republic credits, and Watto knows a loss when it walks in the door. Qui-Gon is doing the equivalent of throwing a marshmallow at a brick wall hoping it will break through. It isn't that Toydarians are particularly uninfluenceable, it's that Qui-Gon has 0 leverage in this exchange.
Tumblr media
Look at the expression shift on Elan's face. Other people getting hit with a mind trick don't look so distressed; that's a face of a guy whose therapist just dropped a truth bomb and needs some time to reshuffle their priorities. This scene could be read as Obi-Wan being a dismissive asshole and Elan being a flake, played for laughs, but it could also be read as Obi-Wan picking up mental distress and nudging someone towards a change they're already considering.
In conclusion, the phrase "weak-minded" is poorly chosen; it would be more accurate to say "easily suggestible". I propose instead that the successes of Jedi mind tricks in older material show them in situations where the target is already inclined to go along with it, in one way or another; they're light suggestions that work on the target's mental state and expectations, rather than wrecking balls forcing people to do things they already don't want to do.

This is canon, it has to be. You can't convince me that at some point in A New Hope, or in the OT, this didn't happen.
I realized I haven't drawn much (if not, none at all) of the original trilogy though I think it was the best.
I hate anatomy. I hate drawing weapons. But I also hate myself so I thought why not draw Leia with a blaster.

I genuinely believe that the new SW trilogy wouldn’t have flopped out into irrelevance like it did if they hadn’t dumped Finn on the side of the freeway like a new pet rabbit the week after easter

"They're ruining Star Wars now!"
Buddy, when I grew up, I read books about how Palpatine had a son with three eyes. And then there was another guy with three eyes, who was impersonating Palpatine's son! Or one time Luke Skywalker was in love with a Jedi ghost! Or when C-3P0 wrote a song about how great Han was, and sang part of it for Princess Leia!
You wouldn't last an hour in the hive of scum and villainy where they raised me.

rose tico is such a difficult character to talk about bc firstly wow a southeast asian woman in the biggest movie franchise ever! secondly kelly marie tran was racially abused to the point of being driven off the internet before tlj even came out for having the audacity to be a southeast asian woman in the biggest movie franchise ever while disney did nothing to protect her and it’s fucked up that john boyega and domnhall gleeson i think were the only cast members to speak up about that??? thirdly rian johnson gave her such a stupid condescending and kinda sexist story arc that i couldn’t even enjoy seeing her in the movie despite how happy i was to see someone like her (like me) involved. fourth, disney then cut her screen time in tros to like 80 seconds total as if to reward/comply with all the racists who abused her online, as if to apologise to them. fifth, 90% the rightful backlash of sidelining an asian woman character became not about defending kelly marie tran, but about riding rian johnson’s dick as if he was oh so great and magnanimous for allowing her 13 minutes of inconsequential screentime, as if he personally decided that there should finally be an asian woman supporting character in star wars (a story that was originally copied from hidden fortress 1958, which an asian woman LEADS) as if people of colour aren’t tokenised and focus-grouped and run through a million algorithms before having the right to exist in major hollywood franchises.. anyways someone outside of disney pls give kelly marie tran a job in something GOOD
