it was surprisingly slow in the bar, people trickled in here and there, but it wasn’t the usual rush. it allowed her more time to actually get to know her patrons and from there she usually got the best stories. this, a former mormon, piquing her interest. she imagined that she could text ivy the details when she got home, gossip about him to her friends back in virginia. an eyebrow quirked, “you were a mormon? what happened?” she asked as she poured him another, taking a sip of water before wiping her hands on a nearby napkin. she hoped the question wasn’t too invasive, she was just genuinely curious.

rochelle watched from behind the bar at the male’s reaction. she smirked, her attention bouncing between him and her other patrons. “typically, yeah.” she knew she sounded dismissive, but for once she wasn’t meaning to. “this your first time drinkin’ or somethin’? did you just turn 21?” she couldn’t be too critical - though she’d been drinking a long while before reaching legal age, her reaction to her first sip was pretty much the same. “it’ll go down easy eventually, you get used to it.”

she wouldn’t lie, his response surprised her, but she wasn’t intimidated. she knew him, knew that he wouldn’t do anything to her in such a public space. plus if he dared lay his hands on her, there would be hell to pay. her parents could put him away with a snap of a finger. she smirked, placing a hand on his chest which she was sure would set him off even more. she applied pressure, pushing him back. “personal space, thanks,” she retorted, shaking her head as she picked up her things. “you think you scare me? that’s cute.” she could understand how others could find him intimidating, but there was nothing that he could do to her aside from exchange harsh words. “you have somethin’ else to say, or? i have somewhere to be, and better things to do than talk to trailer trash.”

ellis’ interest is immediately piqued when rochelle mentions that she’s a bartender, because coincidentally, so is he. ‘ i turn off dad mode almost every night, because i’m a bartender as well ? that’s crazy… i work at the bar on fifth, so we must technically be rivals. but it seems like we’re both doing alright for ourselves, ’ he responds, slightly amazed that he was able to connect with someone over the simple fact that they both made a living making drinks into the early hours of the morning. in truth, it was difficult juggling parenthood and a night job, but it was worked best for him. not to mention, he was very good at making drinks while simultaneously offering small conversations to the patrons he was serving. and as long as his bills were paid and his daughter was taken care of, he’d stick with whatever job worked.

she could never imagine what that must be like - being a patient, caring parent by day, and having to deal with drunks by night. by no means was she upset with her job, but she could guess that during the days when a child is particularly fussy, having to deal with inebriated adults was the last thing one wanted to do. “that’s really cool,” she said, amazed, the respect she had for him evident in her tone. “i bet it’ll be fun when she gets older, tellin’ her all the stories that we hear basically every night. i had one guy tell me he’s a banker during the week, and a drag queen on the weekends. he went into detail about how he went to a drag show, got into the wrong car at the end of the night, and eventually called his boss to pick him up for work the next morning.” she chuckled at the memory, the faces of those around him who overheard the conversation, “what’s your craziest story?”

if there was one thing he hated, it was being at the norley mall. it was always so packed, mostly with north norley kids, and there was nothing to do besides look at the same stores and the same mannequins and the same fashion. if he could avoid it, he would, but he had promised his sister he’d take her to buy a new shirt, so while she was roaming abercrombie, kip was wandering the premise wondering what the fastest way to kill himself would be. with his head cast down and his eyes trained on his phone, he hadn’t even noticed the person walking in his direction until their bodies collided, a familiar voice exploding from the person he’d run in to. “all right, calm the fuck down, would you princess ?”

it took her a moment to process the events that took place, all leading her to confusion at the male’s words. the fact that he came at her in such an aggressive way when he should have been the one paying attention? she couldn’t believe her ears. “excuse me?” she asked, an incredulous smile on her face. “watch where the fuck you’re going,” she repeated, her words full of venom. “princess? please,” she gave a dismissive way of her hand, scoffing, “you couldn’t come up with anything better than that? dismissed.”
