chapter 13
Last summer, I met this guy named Philip. He was my friend’s cousin, from Jamaica, who had to come and stay with them over the summer. Sometimes when I would go to my friend’s house, his cousin and I would speak and I’d ask him random questions about his life in Jamaica, what was his usual routines, what he liked, a general day in a life of a Jamaican, etc. I learned a lot from him speaking on his experiences and shedding light on things I never knew about Jamaica. Hearing his thoughts and opinions on America was the most interesting part of our interview.
There are people in this world that can’t see themselves build a life in America; however, there are people who see America like a rainbow with gold at the end of it. “America is the place to be, you know what I mean. Because all the opportunities that are provided to you are countless,” Philip says. There were many reasons why Philip come to America for the summer. One of the main reasons why Philip leaves Jamaica is to make money. In Jamaica, he did work study. He was enrolled in college, studying to become a “professional coder” and working in computer-programming. The exchange rate in Jamaica is very low, so their economy is doing poor resulting in having unstable sources of income. “I can work here and get paid almost seventeen dollars an hour, back at home, it was going to be about two fifty,” says Philip jokingly. Having to go to school, pay for school expenses, pay for possible home or car expenses, and just random wants was too much to juggle when the pay was too low for anyone. Another reason he leaves is to get away from the bad climate and environment down in Jamaica. I asked him was it more dangerous for him to live in America or in Jamaica and he responded Jamaica. He then explains to me that their justice system is so corrupt that you could easily pay off the police. Most people can’t walk outside late at night because you could possibly be killed with a machete for petty reasons. I knew that Jamaica had issues, but I didn’t really know the severity. When I think about Jamaica, I think about the nice clear water, the nice music, the delicious food, but certainly not crime. This made me think about how the world will portray countries as a beautiful place and block out the negative events happening during our everyday lives.
Another reason Philip came here was to spend time with his family. I asked him would it have been harder for him to come here if he didn’t have family here. He explains to me this is his bridge to a better life. The danger and low-income status pushed him to leave Jamaica and come to America to better his chances of having more opportunities. Philip already had a passport, so. Traveling to America was easy for him. His mom paid for his flight to come here and at the end of the summer he’d pay his way back using the money he earned by working. His family is his bridge because without them, paying to stay in America to make more money would decrease his chances of success in his goals. After landing, it was hard for him to find a job but then he was hired at Island Quizine, working for fourteen dollars an hour as a cashier, scheduled to work at least 8 hours a day, with at least a day or two off out of the week.  When he isn’t working, he enjoys his time with his family, especially with his cousin. At first Philip was intimidated by his cousin, but then as they started hanging more and that built a strong relationship with them. Although his aunt rarely allowed him out the house unless to go to work, him and his cousin would hang in the backyard and just talk and smoke for hours. Spending time with his cousin was his favorite thing to do here.
Leaving your country for anyone can be scary and hard sometimes. I personally believe that this is a courageous thing for anybody to do. One of my major concerns, if I had to move to a different country, would be me knowing if this would be good for me and if it would be good for my family. I asked Philip did he miss his family and his response was a general response, nyet surprising. “Oh of course I miss my family but seeing everyone struggle down there including me is a load. I rather leave them to chase and obtain wealth for us forever and achieve at it. My family will never have to worry about worrying about our next meal again,” he says. I believe that he was strong and adamant about knowing exactly what he wanted for his family. This interview taught me that even though life can be challenging, it doesn’t have to be hard.

Chapter 10 fieldwork
Marx’s believe that are two classes. These classes are influenced heavily by the capitalistic system, that pushes people into one of the two classes. The capitalist stage of production consists of two main classes: bourgeoisie and proletariat. In Marxist context, Bourgeoisie is a class who own most of society’s wealth and means of production. Proletariat is the class of wage workers who were worked in industrial production and main source of income was derived from the sale of their labor power.
This article talks abouts Shein’s factories and their workers. Shein’s company would be the bourgeoisie, having the power to run these companies to sell their clothes. The company who underpays and have signs of help messages on the clothes left by workers in their manufacturing factories. These workers are the proletariat who works for the bourgeoises to increase their income of pay, while the workers must earn what they pay.
Weber believed that owning property is only just a part of what determines a person’s social class. In addition to owning property, you must have power and prestige. His theory argues that social stratification cannot be defined solely in terms of class. He saw that political power was split into three groups: class, group power, and status. This propose that all business tasks should be divided amongst the workers. The jobs should be given out by what they work well on. In this way, the workers of any company know their role and what’s expected of them.
I chose the home website of the Walgreen’s career page because I believe this shows an example of Weber’s theory. This website shows each job they have that requires workers to have a different specialty who has those job requirements. This allows a future employee to know what they will need to know for their job.
Bourdieu’s theory includes four symbolic power, habitus, and capital to have high social class. His theory tries to show that people develop strategies which are adapted to the structures of the societies that they live in. He believes that social capital enables a person exert power on the group or a person who use the resources.
In this article, it talks about how Kendall Jenner grew to fame. Kendall Jenner knows that she has family that are all celebrities. Her sisters are “influencers” and models. This means she comes from a wealthy family that was born into wealth and high social class. To begin a name for herself to increase herself fame, she began to model making a bigger name for herself.

We/I chose these questions because we/I thought that asking college students would be the perfect age group to ask because they have fresh experiences and I think the answers would have more thought than emotion or trying to be funny.
2. Some similarities in the questions they talked about quality more than quantity. Getting to know a person was more important to more people than most, instead of how much time they spent together. People who were more on the quantity time, insisted that they wait about 4-5 years or so before marrying someone. Race and gender really didn't play a part in the answers, only if they really enjoyed that persons company. Another similarity that I noticed was that the people who answered about trauma did all agree that they had some factors in their life that affected their relationship; whether it's from mom or dad.
3. Something that surprised me was that majority of the people that were asked wanted to get married.
4. Something that I would do differently is asking more people and encourage them to go in depth of what they really want to say

This is some my family, I am the middle child on my mom’s side and the oldest on my dad’s side. Our ethnicity is African American, although, my father wants me to refer myself as an aboriginal.
My family lived in America for a very long time. Most of my family members that are living only remember being in America, but I am pretty sure we moved around before coming here. My family does not embrace American nationalism. As the years went by, my family started to move away from the “European” ways and started tapping into their self taught ways, learning real history and not what we’ve been taught in schools. My grandparents on my mother side were by the book people, as well as my great grandparents, but soon they taught their children to self educate, not just American history, but their real ethnicity and luthier life’s purpose. On my dad’s side, they never embraced American nationalism. Both sets of grandparents and great grandparents were Islamic. But, they both took the self education route and American nationalism and ethnicity didn’t really mean anything to them anymore because they learned that somethings they learned in school was fake. Tapping into “real information” they stopped embracing it because they felt like it because they felt like it was forced onto them through fake narratives. Now, on both sides of the family, we do not participate in voting, nor celebrate any holidays that America has placed on certain days.

MICROAGRESSION
Microaggression - a statement or action made as an indirect or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group such as a racial or ethnic minority.
Tumblr media
I chose this picture because it’s a perfect example of how a black women can change their hair to whatever they’d like it to be without being asked is their hair real. There are some black people today, with long, straight or curly hair and people will still ask if its theirs just because they are black.
2. WHITE SUPREMACY
White supremacy - the belief that white people constitute a superior race and should therefore dominate society, typically to exclude of other racial and ethnic groups.
Tumblr media
This picture I chose happened on Jan 6, 2021, where a lot of white rioters raided the white house just on the simple fact that they couldn’t accept the election results, despite all evidence that Trump lost. Outside and inside the white house, there was a lot of symbols and banners representing white supremacy. Storming the white house alone was an act of white supremacy, officers were even there to riot with the protestors. There were barely injuries and deaths compared to the peaceful protesting during the BLM movement.
3. RACE & RACISM
Racism - Individuals' thoughts and actions and institutional patterns and policies that create or reproduce unequal access to power, privilege, resources, and opportunities based on imagined differences among groups.
Tumblr media
I chose this cartoon because it depicts racism in simpler terms. They placed all white rabbits in one room, then randomly started turning the rabbits blue one by one. After a rabbit turned blue, the white rabbits would make fun of them or be mean to the rabbit just because he turned blue and looked different from the usual white rabbits. After being kicked out of the group for being blue, the other blue rabbits started forming a friendship.
4. INDIVIDUAL RASCISM
Institutional racism - distinguished from the explicit attitudes or racial bias of individuals by existence of systematic policies or laws and practices that provide differential access to goods.
Tumblr media
I chose this scene because the white teacher is always inflicting racism or saying racist comments to the one black student in the classroom. She clearly believes every black person is in some tribe from Africa. She is teaching a lesson on Africa, then turns to Chris and asks him what Tribe he was from. In other scenes, I noticed her character is used to show microaggression towards Chris and no other student.
5. COLONIALSIM
Colonialism - a practice or policy of having a full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers and exploiting is economically.
Tumblr media
I chose this picture because colonialism is evident in the workplace. People have been brainwashed to think that looking, talking, or acting white just automatically makes you smarter than what you really are. Today, Nigeria is still affected by the effects of colonialism in their courtroom, wearing white curly wigs when they attend. They also sell the wigs outside of the courtroom. This takes away from tackling the problems head on and look at it from their perspective as their true self and roleplaying as a white man to make decisions.
6. RACIAL IDEOLOGY
Racial Ideology - Set of popular ideas about race that allows the discriminatory behaviors of individuals and institutions to seem normal.
Tumblr media
I chose this scene in Family Guy because it shows us Peter and Cleveland walking under a cop simulation that supposed to put handcuffs on the suspect. Peter walks through and he breaks away free, but then Cleveland walks through and the simulation goes off saying “minority suspect” and starts beating him. This happens all the time with cops and black citizens. Being pulled over for something silly or simple can lead to being incarcerated or even killed if you are a poc. Cops will find any reason to shoot or arrest a poc more than certain for the reason being they are racist or scared. People who try to speak out against this are either arrested or fined or beaten. You rarely hear of a cop killing a white person doing an arrest or being pulled over; even if that person has a weapon on them, the cop will hesitate to pull theirs out on them

I agree with my group rank's order because it was similar to mine. It did change 3 times after finally meeting with all of my group.
2. My ideas didn't change throughout the video. I did have some mixed feelings towards some of the work and events that took place during these times.

The location I chose was my local park. I chose this park because I use to go here all the time when I was younger and I haven't been in a long time. It'd be nice to see and draw the layout of my childhood park. I found they added new parts to the park. I found a lot of rocks that I took back home. I noticed they planted new trees and also they added a garden. When I was younger, I thought that there was a lot of equipment for the children to play with, but now I noticed that the park is used mostly by adults.Something that wasn't at the park was a bathroom or a park facility. You can see the difference between the new play area and structures and the old. During covid, you can see some of the play areas weren't being used. I noticed that there were some rusty structures and some new built structures.

older children play area. 7. open grass. 12. bridge
