What I did:
-guest artist presentation meetings: 1hr
-went thrifting for materials: 4hrs
-dyed fabric samples: 3hrs
-researched artists: 1hr
What I accomplished/discovered/encountered:
I have discovered I could make a fashion show that is transitional and builds up as it goes. I can start the show off as casual somewhat fitting streetwear and show pieces that get wilder, less fitted, and more sculptural (haute couture-ish) as it gets to the end. The end outfits are meant to close the show in a dramatic way and surprise the audience. To do this, I want to try to incorporate more colors/textures. Some references I was told to look into are Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, Ericka Hart, Lara Schnitger “Slut Sticks” and “Hauserwirth”, and Rei Kawakubo. I have come to the conclusion that I should create a look book to get a feel for my style and how I want to create this smooth transition with the looks. The best/most interesting way for me to do this is to create a collage of looks from magazine pages, looking specifically for the colors that match my materials. Since having only the 3 colors I have been collecting so far (neon organge, yellow/green, blue) are very limiting and can get boring fast, I should add more (like neon pink, and you can never go wrong with blacks and whites). This should motivate me more to start making as much as I can ASAP since it’s trial and error and I have to see what works as I go.
What I think I should do next:
-research questions
-try to make a sample a week
-keep up to touch with former vintage to find out when they rent their new store
-start look book

What I did:
-grant proposal: 2hrs
-research on uniforms: 5hrs
-created 1 garment sample: 5hrs
-created presentation: 2hrs
What I accomplished/discovered/encountered:
Questions to consider from feedback during presentation in class:
How to narrate your own uniqueness?
Why the clothes revel your message?
How many series? How many pieces of what types of clothing?
How displayed? Hanger? Mannequin? Which gender mannequin?
Could you laser engrave words onto fabric instead of stand?
What will happen at pop up show?
Why that venue? Is the space as fluid as your concept? Do they have the same values as you? Corset wouldn’t fit the body- that’s important can you talk about that more?
Is this something unique? Has it been done before?
Do the pockets work?
Connotations of sex work?
Fitting v loose?
Disconnect between concept and visual concept?
How to subvert?
How does sex ed play into these pieces?
Installation vs clothing?
How to organize all concepts in project?
Why the hi-vis stuff?
Work clothing isn’t really gendered fashion, it’s utilitarian (more gender norms in professional world not clothing)?
How many garments are you planning?
Are the garments unisex- both female + male going to model garment?
Why do you think worker uniform is strictly male?
What is the significance of bright colors/this aesthetic?
What does it say about our generations relationship to gender+sexuality? (think of our tendency to be more open-minded, experimental than former generations)
How can this understanding inform the materials/shape/form of your work?
Significance of vintage/experimental clothing in queer communities?
Less focused on binaries and spoke more to dismantle those structures not combining or redefining them?
Work on staging your problem by pointing out the problems with gender+clothing first?
How will this piece of work educate?
How can one fully merge male+female clothing to create a type of 50/50 set of clothing line?
Educational aspect somewhat vague?
Explore male aspect more?
How might you define the qualities of the safe space of your work?
How directly do you want these clothing objects to inform about sexual health, queering gender identity, etc.?
Connect why you chose the materials you’re working with to your concept?
Explain more about the word/concept of ‘uniform’ + think about how that could inform your collection?
How are your specific clothing items confirming your ideas about subverting gender/sexuality?
Is the type of clothing the only sexual (education) part?
Find a different way to sketch to show ideas as a whole? Make collage sketches?
What I think I should do next:
-research questions
-try to make a sample a week
-find location back ups if location falls through (elena+friends are looking into renting out a warehouse, etc..)
-specify concept more
-apply to more grants

What I did:
-practicing taking apart recycled clothes+remaking with lingerie: 5hrs
-talked about doing research on garments+uniforms: 5hrs
What I accomplished/discovered/encountered:
I figured out I could merge two materials that I am interested in using in multiple ways. One is using the template/pattern of lingerie and creating it out of hi-vis construction workwear to show visibility to topics of sexuality and gender. Another way would be vice versa, using the template/pattern of hi-vis construction workwear and creating it out of lingerie materials. It is still undecided if doing both of these in one project will be too complicated, as I don’t know which one would be more successful to get my point across yet. It is suggested I go back to the beginning and look into uniforms, their specific purpose, the different types, and when it makes sense to be gender neutral verse when it makes sense to differentiate.
What I think I should do next:
-more research on basic foundation of man+woman garments
-answer questions on uniforms
-start making

What I did:
-went thrifting for material: 5hrs
-answer questions for concepts/themes: 4hrs
-played with projection mapping: 2hrs
What I accomplished/discovered/encountered:
Came across a great exhibition space which will let me show my work in. The process of collaborating with the space is to be continued. I talked to Annica Cuppetelli about the concepts and discovered that I need to more research on gender. This means breaking it down into simple patterns+foundations of garments of man+woman. This will help me figure out how to create something in between that can possibly be identified or labeled, or not. I need to figure out who my audience is and address them. I have always thought about about incorporating lingerie into the clothing line to represent sexuality. Finally came up with a few ideas on how I could do that in this specific line, merging it with the construction wear to create a garment. This needs more thought though, including samples. Projection mirroring has turned into projection mapping, a technique I found out is not that complicated to do for beginners which means I will have to experiment a ton more.
What I think I should do next:
-more research on basic foundation of man+woman garments
-figure out projection mapping
-play with projector+mirrors+mapping

What I did:
-went thrifting for material: 3hrs
-made list of concepts/themes: 2hrs
-think about brand name “bean”- or ”L.L.Bean>r.r.bean”
What I accomplished/discovered/encountered:
- According to the UM dictionary of symbolism, "bean” means:
“Often used instead of chips as a type of "play money", beans have come to represent objects of little value in the European tradition (i.e. someone who doesn't know "beans"). They are also symbolic of immortality and magic power (although connected with witches since a beanstalk can form a witches' broom), as in Jack and the Beanstalk. Once planted, beans can represent resurrection and reincarnation since they grow spiritually upwards.
Beans are also phallic, especially when they are green and can symbolize male sex organs, and can connote immortality. Can be thought of also as an elementary food or way of counting. The flowers that can grow from beans emit a smell that produces accidents, lunacy, bad dreams and terrifying visions.”
Thus, the brand can relate to the concept of the art through the idea of magic power/immortality/resurrection/reincarnation/growing spiritually. The brand makes you feel powerful or magical when you wear the clothing. I like the idea of growing spiritually since the clothing should help you grow in confidence/self-esteem/etc.
What I think I should do next:
-more research on topic
-collect more material
-play with projector+mirrors

What I did:
-thesis proposal= 3hrs
-found projector/tested
-created presentation= 1hr
What I accomplished/discovered/encountered:
Through the presentation session, I received really helpful feedback that will better guide me on my research, something I feel I have been stuck on. I have been debating using music/sound design in my installation.
What I think I should do next:
I should research all of the advice that I received/dig deeper into my research. Questions include:
How is sex ed currently taught?
What information is lacking? in how sex ed is taught?
What is the role of sustainability?
Tell the story
What are the gender norms? Be descriptive.
How are the messages portrayed?
How to subvert gender norms?
How does subverting gender norms connect to sexual education?
How recycled clothing speaks to sex ed/ consent/ gender?
Can you talk about projection aesthetics and how they relate to concept?
How is it going to subvert the fashion stereotypes?
What “redefining gender” means to someone who wouldn’t understand it.
What are the norms?
How will it expose the bad sex ed thats so prevalent?
How will the narrative/informative side of the concept come through in the final piece?
How does sexual assault on college campus connect to the gender spectrum + how will you communicate this?
Incorporating both male + female?
Incorporate main idea how the clothes are portrayed- how does projection help you say something about gender norms?
More specific examples of the boundaries you’re breaking?
Elaborate on relationship between consent+gendered clothing conventions?
How will the clothing suggest your intentions?
Is this a history of this? Rewind history in you performance, research origins of the problems, locate the norms+origins and appropriate them.
Clothes for “everyone”? include widely varying body types, including people who need specific alterations based on their unique body types.
