Black Rhinoceros, Tanzania, Africa, July 2017. This was the last of the big 5 (Lion, Leopard, African Buffalo, Elephant & Rhinoceros) for us to spot (did not see any on our first Safari). When we reached Tanzania, we were very interested in seeing Rhino as that was one we had not seen. We were on Safari with new friends from Italy, Sandro and Renata. They had seen rhino but were interested in seeing more. We are out on Safari and our guide stops the Jeep and looks with his binoculars. He points off in the distance and says “There are two Rhinos over there”! I zoom in with my big lens and see what looks like a giant rock (they were actually both laying down). We get into a discussion about whether they are actually rhino… when Lyla says “could we head that way and get a closer look?” (Smart woman)!! We do and came upon this mother and daughter rhino. This is momma! There are believed to be approximately 3,000 Black Rhinoceros living in the wild (they are considered more “shy” as they tend to hang out in brushy areas since they prefer to browse) and approximately 15,000 White Rhinoceros. They are all grey in color. Black and White refer to type of Rhinoceros (as does brown and black bears). White rhinos graze (lawn mower) whereas black rhinos browse (eating more branches and leaves). Black Rhinoceros tend to be more aggressive whereas White rhinos tend to be more mellow.
