“A person is a fool to become a writer. His only compensation is absolute freedom. He has no master except his own soul, and that, I am sure, is why he does it” - Roald Dahl

About the Author
Roald Dahl was Born on September 13th,1916 in Llandaff, South Wales. Roald was a troublemaker from birth. His childhood was filled with spending time with his mother and father, three sisters, and summers with his grandparents. Tragically, when he was four, his father died.
He described his grade school years as a living nightmare. He was punished publicly and given a harsh beating by the principal for placing a dead mouse in a storekeeper’s candy jar. After this incident, his mother followed his late father’s wishes and sent him to St. Peter’s, a British boarding school. Roald later transferred to Repton, a private school which was highly respected and known for excellence. He deeply resented the rules and upon graduation, he turned down his mothers offer tosend him to college. He took a job offer in Africa and remained there for many years. As he aged, he began craving more adventure, so he joined the Royal Air Force. During his service, he was in a plane crash in Alexandria, Egypt and was badly injured.
He was transferred to Washington, D.C. to assume the position of an assistant air attache, which is a technical expert who advises government representatives. This is where he began his writing career. He first started publishing short stories in newspapers and magazines. After he had his own children, his love for writing children’s books flourished. He developed a unique story telling technique that became the basis for his popular books. He is quoted as saying, “Children are highly critical. And they lose interest to quickly. You have to keep things ticking along. And if you think a child is getting bored, you must think up something that jolts it back.” This ideology made his stories somewhat controversial but regardless, Roald Dahl’s children’s books will forever remain a staple in children’s literature.

Inspiration
Roald Dahl’s book, Matilda, reflects his experience with the cruel principal he encountered as a young boy. This book is a self-expression piece of the fantasy world and superhuman powers Dahl daydreamt of as a child. In the book, Dahl expressed the pain of a young girl and gifted her superhuman abilities but she also had to learn how to master her powers while also surviving a rough home life and difficult school experience. I think this certainly represents a crucial experience that shaped Dahl’s personal psyche forever.

Analysis
Matilda herself personifies Dahl’s mischievous side as she plays tricks on her lousy parents and evil principal. She is misunderstood by her parents and her brother. She is known as trouble maker, but really, all she is trying to do is bring justice to the school. She befriends her teacher and together, they defeat the terrible principal. The principal ends up adopting Matilda from her awful parents and there is a picture perfect happy ending to her story. This symbolizes the fantasy world that Dahl created to protect himself from his own trauma that occurred at the hands of his principal. I personally thought it was interesting and ironic that Dahl created Matilda as a girl. This to me eludes to the possibility that he felt like he wasn’t a tough guy as a child dealing with that experience. It may be why he chose to create Matilda instead to be able to give readers a more sympathetic outlook on her background history. Matilda is an ode to Dahl’s childhood and how he felt like he overcame his emotions during that time.
