4th gen severely lacks bg music- why?
mnet survival shows may be the some of the cause.
during the mnet rigging scandal, two produce groups were heavily affected- the two active groups from the last two survival shows, iz*one and x1.
iz*one, survived the fallout and continued as a full member group for the rest of their contract, until disbanding in 2021. their impact on the kpop industry - and especially 4th gen- a hallmarker for polished discographies, performance, and personalities - those which transferred to later 4th gen, giving us the plethora of girl group music and concepts we have today, and their former members participating in a new wave of freshness throughout the genre.
x1 was meant to be the boy group equivalent, but unfortunately disbanded due to the scandal, which a group that may have been historic and might have followed a similar path to iz*one, maybe even wanna one. due to the lack of boy group member trade-off to other groups, a voice to other voices may have died in the process, giving less mics to the boy groups who shine in the less spotlight given stages.
this is not disregarding boy group music in 4th gen entirely, skz, txt, ateez and many other boy groups have definitely succeeded in garnering popularity and are staples of 4th gen. this is just an observation as to why there is a surge of girl group music in more recent years as opposed to 3rd gen, where boy groups would be the primary focus on the industry. i do believe there are more reasons to the 4th gen gg takeover, this is just one outlook on the mnet survival show perspective.

it makes so much sense that kpop's retro era and y2k era was when it was.
ig it also makes sense in terms of the trends during that time, which i feel kind of reflected the world around us.
ig with these retro sounds we were also being retrospective on life in general,
and the youthful, "new millenium" era of kpop kind of signifies freshness, but also nostalgia. the kind that feels new but also carries a bit of the past with it.
this chain of events happened from 2020 to 2023, which makes so much sense at the turn of a new decade and a strange circumstance.
enha's revolution of mvs and music i feel solidifies this idea. along with this i see stayc, and other grps that debuted in 2020/early 2021.
the two genres can definitely blend, retro and y2k/mcbling being interlinked. kpop definitely went through a rapid paced, 4 decade genre change, retro categorised as anything before the late 90's.
the crux of this had been the kdramas- the popularity of 2521 and 20th century girl pushing this change.
idk what i'm saying at this point so i'll stop heree :)

i think in terms of marketing they really promoted singles inferno s2 a lot better than last season. though i feel that s1 was loved more (by my peers at least), the people who were on the show definitely collectively benifitted more from last time. it seems they took the criticisms of last year and applied it, and it made the ending more enjoyable. the addition of 2 more episodes also helped with the longevity and enjoyment of it. you got to learn more about the people than last time, and they ran home with that with the new swoon video coming out.
i would say dispersing the viewer's attention on other people helped as well. instead of the attention after the show focusing on one or two people (this isnt a jab at anyone in s1 i love all of them sm <3) for now, i can see a lot of the cast getting a lot of attention from this. (not completely sure in the long run. there are a few people who may blow up in popularity)
anyways. marketing aside this season was really good! s1 always holds a special place in my heart but i loved watching it. i hope for the best in the cast's futures.
thats it :)
