A Few Special Snippets
1. Climbing...what was it?...294 steps to the top of Sacré-Coeur.
2. Admiring Fashion Week in full spin on Rue Saint Honoré, with Meghan leading the way. She was always the fashionable sister, right? But walking in the high-end stores really gave me a new insight into that world, and definitely some inspiration!
3. Ladurée macarons...must I say more??
4. A special dinner just with mom and me, at one of my favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurants in Paris: Auberge Nicolas Flamel. We had the funniest waiter who told stories with each trip to our table that had mom and I laughing uncontrollably. (One of them featured a woman on New Year’s Eve who bent into the candle and her hair go up in flames!)
5. Less fabulous but still notable: staying in the same hotel as the Real Madrid Football (Soccer) team and getting woken up at 2AM by mischievous Parisians trying to sabotage their opponents with fire crackers.
6. Grand Musée du Parfum: left with a much higher appreciation for people who craft perfums and have to use their noses ALL DAY LONG.

Living the Parisian Dream
Easily my favorite day of the vacation : Sunday.
Musée d’Orsay. Skipped all the other levels and headed straight to the fifth level that contains the Impressionists. Camille Pissaro’s works really caught my eye. Ignorant as I was, I thought, “how awesome that they have so many pieces by a female artist!”. No no, Caroline, Camille Pissaro is indeed a man, much to my disappointment. His “Paysage à Éragny” was my personal favorite. Up there as well in my opinion was Renoir’s “Danse à la ville” juxtaposed with his “Danse à la compagne”. Third place goes to Degas’ “Little Dancer of Fourteen Years”. I surprised myself by how much I appreciated it, as a usually don’t care much for sculpture.
Now now, this was the most amazing moment. Lunch on the top of the Eiffel Tower....was this real life? We had a window seat with the most fabulous view. The tasting course was exceptional. I don’t generally care for foie gras (duck liver) but man oh man, this one was gooood. Dessert was a mango and passion fruit sorbet, how could it get much better? We were giggling from champagne and getting lost on the way to the restrooms. Overall, one of my favorite meals...ever.

Girls’ Trip to Paris
Getting to show my mom and Meghan around one of my favorite cities was quite a treat. Since it was Meghan’s first time in France, we hit all the tourist sites such as the Louvre and La Tour Eiffel, but I didn’t mind a bit. However, I must say that the Louvre is one of my least favorite museums. How strange? you must think, but really, it is too hard to navigate and to appreciate all the wonderful works within. Painting after painting cover the walls, overwhelming any onlooker. Yes, we did see the Mona Lisa, or “La Joconde” as we french call it. After stopping in a brasserie after, we headed back to our hotel. Much to my satisfaction, it had a spa with a sauna, of which I took full advantage.
The next day we hopped in a taxi for Notre Dame. Funny story-we were kicked out by the driver because he would rather go home than drive us anywhere other than the airport. Not helping the rude Parisian taxi stereotype, eh? We luckily found another in seconds and were in front of Notre Dame. I didn’t want to lose any of my french on this trip since I would be talking mostly in English with mom and Meghan so I always chose french when it came to audioguides. What a pleasure to spend two hours learning about all the architectural decisions that contributed to the finished building. Our audioguide included a tour of the treasury which housed tons of precious objects pertaining to the Church. When I passed by the attendant in the box, I waved my ticket and said that it should be free. “No, no, no, mademoiselle, it’s not free, it’s included. We would never make this free.” Even though her words changed nothing, it did give me an appreciation for seeing the gold encrusted chalices and other priceless items. This women was proud to be working here. She was proud to show this place to me.
We went to most possibly my favorite book store in the world, Shakespeare and Company. Books housed in every nook and cranny, it’s somewhere that both excites and calms me. Now that its become quite a tourist site, the majority of the books are in English. My mom asked me if I wanted any, but I refused, as I’m trying to dedicate any time reading to FRENCH books. I took a nice break over Christmas in the Cayman Islands by indulging in one of my favorite series, so now it was time to buckle down. After, we had a relaxing lunch at a place we stumbled on, “Un Dimanche à Paris” (A Sunday in Paris). We marveled over the delicately assembled pastries and the thickest hot chocolate. Equally magnificent as Notre Dame but often forgotten on the lists of “musts” to visit is Sainte Chapelle. Thousands of stained glass pieces matched together to create a whole room of colors that takes one’s breath away.
