IN THE WAKE OF IT ALL: EVENT 001, PART 001
You’ve seen the social media posts. The tweets from Hollywood actors and actresses and the tribute Instagram posts from his fans. You’ve seen the grief surrounding his death. The lingering sadness palpable in the corners of pop culture and Mallory. You’ve read the post put up by Derek’s parents, their gratitude for the love shown toward their beloved dead son and their emotions regarding his passing. You’ve read the announcement of Derek Mitchell-Bach’s wake and celebration of life. The church service at the Mallory Church. And you’ve decided to go. You’ve decided to pay your respects to a dead man who may or may not deserve it.
So here you are now, standing under the stained glass of the church or sitting uncomfortably on one of the long wooden benches, waiting for the service to start. The service will start soon, right as the clock strikes 3 PM. You get up or you sit down. You wander around or you stay put. You find familiar and unfamiliar faces in the crowd. You talk to them or you don’t. You tell stories about Derek to one another or you have nothing to say. You look into the casket or you look away from it. You find things to do or not do to pass time before the church service starts.
Before the Hometown Hero is given his final homecoming.
It’s finally Ricochet’s first event! This part one of the event and the date is 15th July 2021. It’s before 3 PM. The service is expected to last for around two hours. Your characters have filed into town exclusively to attend this funeral. Why are they here? What do they think of Derek and his odd death? Interact with one another! Maybe share your conspiracy theories and gossips regarding his death with one another?

Welcome back into town, Odessa Ann Washington (Admin Marcia)! It’s been a while since we’ve last seen you around these streets or has it only been yesterday that you’ve walked past that intersection? Either way, familiar faces have been popping up around town and everyone’s excited to meet everyone. Everyone’s got a checklist (click on SOURCE) for people they’d like to see and places to reminisce over. You’ve got one too, right?
BASIC CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Odessa Ann Washington
Birthdate & Age: 20th June 1993, 28
Gender & Pronouns: She/her
Sexuality: Bisexual
Occupation: Child life specialist at a hospital in Boston
FC: Laura Harrier, Whitney Peak
IN-DEPTH
Aesthetics: the muted sound of a piano from far away, silk and roses, the smell of spun candy at a carnival
Biography:
Odessa Washington has never been anything but the very picture of a gentle soul, someone who is inherently good. A protagonist of some sorts. A prettier Jesus, as Derek liked to call her.
Her story starts at her birth. Her mother, a 44 year old surgeon, had never thought she would give birth to another baby when her oldest was already a few years out of the house. Her father had even planned for a child free retirement by the time the doctors confirmed that his wife was pregnant again. They found that they had to switch gears and reconfigure their lives once again, learn how to parent a baby in their older age.
They took it in stride, for the most part. They chose to move to a more affordable place when Odessa was nine and found Mallory. In Mallory, Odessa found her own place pretty quickly, finding friends in almost every individual she met. She was kind and nice and not a very good judge of character. Too loyal and too good in every sense of the words. She befriended everyone, even Derek Mitchell-Bach who found her tolerable.
In high school, her friend group was fluid. She weaved in and out of groups. She smiled at everyone in the hallway. Nothing could ever damper her attitude. That was until Joshua Alcott’s body flew into the swimming pool right in front of her face.
She had run to the swimming pool almost immediately, was part of the masses who tried to get him out. She was the one who checked for his breath, the one who tried to tend to the wounds, the one who knew Joshua Alcott was way beyond saving.
In the aftermath, Odessa Washington found herself playing therapist for everyone. Her kindness now taken for granted as everyone asked for her listening ears and comforting words, as she lent out her help in every way she could. Derek was the only one who would listen to her and not push his story on her. She appreciated that about him, that he’d listen to her.
The two became close friends since then. When Odessa was in New York or LA, she would call Derek up for a chat or two over coffee. He’d send her birthday messages each year. He even set her up with her ex fiancé, a finance guy she loved too much who loved her too little. She had broken up her engagement two weeks before Derek died. So here she is now, a little heartbroken and a little worse for wear, looking for a pair of listening ears and helping hands, looking for a shoulder to cry on.
Ties to Derek Mitchell-Bach or Joshua Alcott? In high school, Odessa ran in the same circle as Derek. He’s still her friend up until his death. They’d joke about planning a ten year reunion for Mallory High alumni from their year. Joshua was someone Odessa knew. They weren’t particularly close but they knew each other.
What were you like ten years ago? Ten years ago, she was much more naïve and trusting and kind. She didn’t have boundaries set up. She gave so much of herself to the wrong people. She was a little more optimistic. She loved Mallory too much.

Welcome back into town, Violet Morales (Peanut)!
OOC INFORMATION
Name: Peanut
Pronouns: she/her
Age: 20 years old
Timezone: est
Activity Level: a solid 9 - I’m currently not working or in school so I spend most of my days online; I’ll be on at least once a day
Triggers: none
Anything else?: n/a
BASIC CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Violet Morales
Birthdate & Age: September 3rd, 1992 & 29 years old
Gender & Pronouns: cis woman, she/her
Sexuality: bisexual
Occupation: unemployed / currently in-between jobs
FC: primary: melissa barrera, younger: becky g (age 19)
IN-DEPTH
Aesthetics: quiet sobs into your pillow, the lingering scent of a nice perfume, blurry polaroids from the night before
Biography: (tw: brief mentions of depression and anxiety)
Violet’s path in life was paved for her long before she was born. Her parents, Elizabeth & Antonio, were your stereotypical cheerleader/football star duo. Mother was the head of the school during her years - a mean girl through and through. Father was the star quarterback, a force to be reckoned with. Together they were reckless and oh-so in love. They married right out of high school and had Violet not long after.
Being born into wealth, Violet got everything handed to her on a silver platter & having been born to a mean girl, it was something of a destiny for her to follow that route. She didn’t know any differently; Violet was privileged from the second she was born and she was taught to grip that privilege and put it to “good” use.
When Derek and Violet met, they quickly grew attached at the hip; they were far too similar in nature to not be with each other. Together, they were reckless and in love - much like her parents were. They enabled each other, were each other’s rock and shoulder to cry on. There was nothing in the world they couldn’t do as long as they were together.
But then the gunshots rang out.
Nothing was the same after that. Violet went through a plethora of emotions. She had developed depression and an anxiety disorder shortly after Joshua’s death, though she learned how to put a facade on & make it seem like everything was okay.
Derek and Violet’s relationship turned sour quickly. They argued a lot, bickered over the smallest things. And the next thing she knew, his things were packed and he was gone. And that was the end of that.
Despite how desperately Violet tried to pick up the pieces that were shattered the night of the party, it was to no avail. Something inside her broke that night, something that was simply impossible to repair. She went through jobs like paper in a shredder; never finding one that she was passionate about.
The death of Derek has a boomerang effect; all of the feelings she felt during the weeks after Joshua’s death came pouring back and it was a reset button on all of the progress she’s made within the past 10 years.
The question at hand now is: will Violet do things differently this time around?
Ties to Derek Mitchell-Bach or Joshua Alcott?
Lover to Derek at the time of Joshua’s murder, ex-lover now, though: The pair were two peas in a pod from the moment they met and were inseparable. Everything changed after Joshua’s murder.
Bully to Joshua prior to his murder: Violet didn’t have any personal feud’s with him or anything - she was mostly doing it because her crowd of friends were assholes and Joshua just so happened to be an easy target. Violet never expected him to get murdered and has regretted bullying him since.
What were you like ten years ago?
A rich bitch to put it simply. She held her head high and walked through high school as if it was her own personal runway. Violet was a lot of things 10 years ago: a queen b, a party girl, reckless.. But above all else, she was loyal to the bitter end. Sure, she spread people’s secrets and dragged many through the mud but if you were a close, beloved friend - you had nothing to worry about.
Elizabeth Morales was someone who never quite got out of her mean girl / queen b phase and she expected nothing less than the same from her daughter. And Violet excelled at following in her mother’s footsteps - until the murder, anyway.

Anything else? Nope!
BASIC CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Raviprabha/Ravi Varadkar (Rav and Ravi were always nicknames, even before transitioning, but he changed his name to Ravi once he came out)
Birthdate & Age: June 20, 1993 / 28
Gender & Pronouns: Trans Man, He/Him
Sexuality: Pansexual
Occupation: Teacher (Arts Education)
FC: Dev Patel & Maitreyi Ramakrishnan
IN-DEPTH
Aesthetics:
A thick, slightly scratchy, wool sweater / a freshly brewed cup of tea / long hair tied hurriedly into a messy bun
Biography:
Ravi was born with a silver spoon in his hand. The oldest child of a doctor, he grew up in a big house with nice clothes and the promise of a bright future. From the moment he was born, his parents had his life planned out for him. Go to an Ivy League, make a lot of money, be successful. That wasn’t what Ravi wanted though. While his parents wanted him to become a lawyer or a doctor, Ravi wasn’t even sure he wanted to go to college. While his parents wanted him to join the debate team, Ravi wanted to join band and theatre. While his parents wanted him to be their perfect daughter, Ravi wanted to be himself.
He had begun to notice a difference in middle school. At that point he just chalked it up to being an angsty pre-teen. As the years passed though, he realized that it was more than him not being like the other girls in his class. In fact, he wasn’t a girl. Knowing that his parents would hate him, try to have him “fixed”, Ravi kept his identity as a trans man a secret. He kept his hair long, wore dresses and put on makeup. He flirted with boys, went to parties, and acted like the perfect, rich, high school girl. Then, at the party of a childhood friend, Joshua Alcott died and everything changed.
Ravi never saw Joshua’s body but, in the chaos after the news broke, something shifted in him. He didn’t care anymore about what others thought of him. All he wanted was to get out of Mallory. The rest of the school year was spent saving up money, sometimes stealing it from his parents, until, finally, the day came that Ravi turned 18. On that day, he packed up his bags, came out to his parents, and left. Times were tough for a while and Ravi spent two years wandering and bouncing between odd jobs. It was hard but, for the first time, Ravi felt like he could finally be himself.
It took him a while to figure out what he wanted to do but Ravi finally came to the realization that he worked really well with children. Soon after, he enrolled in a Childhood Education program, graduating with honors and going on to receive his Masters. For the past year and a half, Ravi has been working as a teacher with an arts education program in Upstate New York. It wasn’t where he thought he would end up but he absolutely loves it. He loves helping kids paint and sculpt and learn how to dance. He thought he’d left Mallory behind until he received a frantic email from Derek and then, not long after, news of the man’s death. Now, Ravi isn’t sure what to do but he does know that it means going back home.
Ties to Derek Mitchell-Bach or Joshua Alcott?
The wealthy elite of Mallory were a tight knit community. Because of this, Ravi and Derek Mitchell-Bach grew up together. As children, they were close but, as they grew up, they grew apart. By the time high school came around, the two only spoke in passing, seeing each other at parties and family functions. Occasionally, Ravi would give Derek information that he wanted. Nothing of importance, just a little gossip that he had heard in the halls, something to keep Derek off his back. Besides that though, the two circled around each other, never really interacting unless necessary.
What were you like ten years ago?
Ten years ago? Oh god, I was a completely different person. No, really. I had a different name, I had long hair.... I... I was living as a girl. I hadn’t come out yet and I was miserable. It was all the teen angst and then some. My entire life was an act. Act like the perfect daughter, act like I wanted to go to Yale, act like I wasn’t screaming inside. If I met my younger self on the street, I don’t think I would have liked them very much if I’m honest. I was very good at pretending to be both the shallow popular girl and the perfect Indian daughter. It was a mess. A total mess. Plus, that was when youtube was in its prime so I was super embarrassing online too. I definitely had a secret tumblr where I would complain and say that Simple Plan was the only band that understood my life. Completely cringe worthy, right?
ANYTHING ELSE?
Hello! I hope this works better. If not, I can always tweak it again! I made it so he and Derek were simply childhood friends who grew apart and Ravi was simply a depressed, dysphoric teen instead of one being blackmailed. I also aged Ravi up a year to fit more with the changes I made.
I was thinking that no one from Mallory would know that a) Ravi was back in town or that b) he had come out and transitioned since leaving. He kind of left and cut himself off from everyone so there wouldn’t be anyone for him to tell about his return.

BASIC CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Nathan Choi
Birthdate & Age: 35 years old,
Gender & Pronouns: Cisgender Male, He/him
Sexuality: Bisexual
Occupation: Detective
FC: Steven Yeun
IN-DEPTH
Aesthetics:
Hurriedly typed notes on a laptop that’s seen better days, worn manilla folders of case files, a packet of cigarettes shoved in his breast pocket
Biography: 250 words min.
Nathan had always had a sense of curiosity. He’d been the kind of kid who loved a good mystery book and lost himself in true crime documentaries. As a first generation American, his family would have rather he be a doctor or a lawyer, or at least become a detective in a big town where the cases were more high profile, but Nathan knew what he wanted.
He’d gone to college at Ohio State to study Criminal Justice, and returned home bright-eyed and full of inspiration to make the world a better place after he went through his police training and graduated from the police academy. He didn’t expect one of his earliest cases to be the one that would keep him up at night a decade later.
Most cops will tell you they all have that one case that sticks out to them. The one that they get stuck on, like an addict chasing a high. For Nathan, it was the death of Joshua Alcott. He’d lived in Mallory all his life, formed connections there, and this death had shaken the community to its core. His sense of duty and his role as the first officer on the scene had made him feel responsible for solving it, for giving answers to a grieving family, but he never got to deliver those.
Nathan’s own family wasn’t around much. They had moved back to retire in South Korea shortly after his high school graduation, but he’d found family in some close family friends who practically treated him as a son. But he lost them too when they died in a tragic car accident. Although they had a closeness to the family in common, he and their biological daughter had never been too close, but she’d needed someone to be there for her after their death, and the two of them had found comfort in one another during their mutual grief, becoming something like siblings in their own way.
For ten years, Nathan would periodically go through his mental index of the events surrounding that night, dig up old reports, or off-handedly ask someone who had been at the party if they were sure they didn’t remember anything else. The last person he’d expected to come sharing notes was Derek himself. Something seemed to have changed, and Derek had developed a newfound curiosity about the case, but before the two of them could have a serious conversation about it, Derek died too in what appeared to be a strange but tragic accident. Now, Nathan is even more desperate for answers, and this time, he’s determined to actually find them.
Ties to Derek Mitchell-Bach or Joshua Alcott?
He remembers the night so clearly. He was barely a few months into the job the night Joshua Alcott was murdered. He knew of Derek by reputation, had been involved in a couple of low-level cases involving him, but of course, nothing ever stuck with that guy. Of course, Derek had been a suspect, but had been ruled out fairly quickly, at least as the person who’d pulled the trigger. Nathan wasn’t initially convinced Derek hadn’t been the one who pulled the strings. That was what the Mitchell-Bach’s did, right?
High schoolers, particularly drunk and stoned high schoolers, had no idea how to preserve a scene. They’d made a mess of everything. None of the forensic evidence at the scene could hold much water, but as the first one on the scene, Nathan did his best to preserve what was left of it anyway. This was a damn sight more demanding than drug deals and robberies, though.
Nathan didn’t really know Derek or Joshua directly. He was about seven years older than them, so he’d never been a classmate or anything, but he has friends of friends who knew them better, friends of friends who were there, and he’s had his nose in the case ever since, digging out old reports and case files on lonely nights when he can’t sleep sometimes, hoping maybe something will shake loose. Recently, Derek had been digging into the case too, and Nathan is sure that’s the reason he’s dead. Whatever happened, he knows someone doesn’t want the truth to come out.
What were you like ten years ago?
He was a young rookie, new to law enforcement and eager to prove himself. He was an intuitive and thoughtful person, keen to help his community. He worked hard, kept his nose down, and tried overall to be kind and thoughtful. In many ways, he still is all those things, but now he’s more seasoned, more direct, and has a nose for bullshit. He’s got over a decade of experience under his belt now, and this time, he’s convinced he can solve the town’s most mysterious cold case.

Welcome back into town, Martin Domenico Benedetti (Jo)!
OOC INFORMATION
Name: Jo
Pronouns: she/her
Age: 23
Timezone: GMT+3
Activity Level: Around 7. I finally went back to working from the office, so it became harder to fiddle around during work lol. Also, in summer I spend some of the weekends away from home. My activity will probably rise to an 8 in autumn.
Triggers: sexual assault
Anything else? I think that’s it! :)
BASIC CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Martin Domenico Benedetti
Birthdate & Age: 16th April 1994
Gender & Pronouns: he/him
Sexuality: bisexual
Occupation: graphic designer & artist
FC: Giancarlo Commare. I think I’d use him when playing Martin ten years younger as well, if that’s okay. Giancarlo played a high-school student in Skam, so there are suitable resources to play him as a 17 year old. :) But please let me know if I should add a second FC anyway.
IN-DEPTH
Aesthetics: half finished cups of cappuccino, missed calls at 2am, the smell of drying oil paint
Biography:
None of the Benedettis were native to Mallory: the father was a businessman from Rome, the mother was a journalist from Washington, and both of their kids — Martin and Cecilia — were born in New York.
In fact, the family of four moved to this small town in Ohio when the children were big enough to understand what kind of a difference this change would make — they were already in middle school. Martin was 12 and his younger sister was 11. And to both of them, it was almost like the end of the world.
Everything they knew and had was left behind: their friends, their schools, Martin’s piano lessons and Cecilia’s football club… They didn't really know why their parents decided to drop the vibrant life they had in New York and become bookstore owners in a small town.
Only later they realised it was to save their marriage. But at the time, they weren't aware of any hardships their parents faced. So it didn’t matter. Their lives turned upside down. They didn’t have anything, and they became ‘strange Italian kids with weird names’.
Until that one lucky day. When Martin met Joshua.
At the time he didn’t know how big of an impact this encounter would have on his life. But Joshua changed his life — over and over again.
Eventually, they became a gang of three — everyone knew about it. But Martin always had a closer bond with Joshua — maybe because he was the first friend he got in Mallory. Their dynamic was a strange one, too. If Joshua was a good student, Martin would keep failing his math classes; if Joshua was a quiet kid, Martin would get into a fight every single Friday.
After all, Martin was your typical teenager: rebellious, angsty, frustrated and confused. But even though they were so different, they also were tight as a fist. They were close.
Perhaps a little too close for Martin, who developed his first crush on a boy — Joshua.
He didn’t want to ruin their friendship — or their little friend group — so he kept his mouth shut. He promised to never tell anyone about it, even if it meant he’d be fuelled by anger.
However, Martin broke his promise. He told his sister. Who, in fact, was more than supportive — even though she was a little younger, Cecilia realised how painful it was for her brother to hide both his sexuality, and his more than friendly love for the best friend.
‘I’ll tell him. I’ll do that when we’re at the party. Derek will definitely have loads of alcohol, it'll calm my nerves. I have to at least admit that girls are not the only people I wanna talk about with them,” Martin smiled to his reflection in the mirror as he was getting ready for the party. He didn’t know Derek that well, but he knew the party would be a blast. “Que será, será.”
Whatever will be, will be.
__________
Someone’s scream. A horrific image of Joshua. Vomiting in a bush. Hours and hours at the police station.
That’s all Martin could remember from that party. His therapist told him that it was a way of coping with a horrible experience — his brain blocked certain information because it was too traumatic.
He never wanted to remember, though.
Martin did everything so he would forget even more: he spent years in Italy studying art, partying, drinking and traveling; went to graphic design courses so he’d have a job that’s at least a little related to his craft (he kept painting in his free time, though); came back to New York and found a girlfriend.
Everything was going well. He built himself a new life. A life without Joshua; a life without the loss of his best friend.
Until, one day, he got an email from Derek. Martin didn’t know how he got his address, but he never replied — mostly because he was being asked about the party. And that was the last thing he wanted to talk about.
That was the last time he saw that name until, one day, Martin got a text message from his mother: “Derek died. The wake is planned. You should come”.
And Martin began packing his bags, talking to his boss about working from a distance and buying more expensive food he couldn’t find in Mallory for his spoiled cat. He was going to visit his childhood town, and he wasn’t sure how long he’d stay.
Whatever will be, will be.
Ties to Derek Mitchell-Bach or Joshua Alcott? Martin was one of Joshua’s best friends who went together with him to the infamous party.
What were you like ten years ago? Slightly depressed, hotheaded and a bit secretive. I was really bad at academics, so I decided to stick to one thing I knew best — art. I'd spend hours in my room, painting.

IN-DEPTH
Aesthetics: a smile that no longer reaches the eyes, a collection of stashed away photos, muffled cries into a pillowcase
Biography: (tw: death, car accident) Naz was quiet from birth, taking so long to cry when she was born that the doctors and her parents feared the worst, but when she finally opened her mouth to cry, even that moment wasn’t terribly loud, just a quiet reassurance that she was breathing. Her family had moved to America from Turkey when she was only a baby, so she grew up in Mallory, may as well have been one of the locals born and raised there. But despite living in Mallory her entire life, Naz was never quite able to find her place. It wasn’t like being interested in music (she started playing cello at a very young age) was isolating considering one of the golden boys of Mallory, Joshua Alcott, was also a musician. It was more so the fact that it seemed like Naz never had much to say, and when she did speak, she usually got tongue tied, or so shy she would stumble over her words. Anyone who paid enough attention to Naz described her as living in her own world. If she wasn’t practicing the cello, she had her nose buried in a book, or was writing in her journal, or flipping through magazines to cut out pictures for her vision board. Those she was most comfortable with, she would talk about her ideas for parties and balls in magical worlds that she invented on her own. Whatever anonymity Naz had in life disappeared when both of her parents were killed in a car accident her sophomore year of high school. She’d always just been the quiet girl in band, but suddenly she was the person whose parents’ deaths were on the front page of the local paper, pictures and all. In a small town, word spreads, and it’s not hard to figure out that a fifteen year old girl is suddenly an orphan. Her parents were family friends with a detective in town, and he took her in so that she wouldn’t have to leave the only home she’d ever known. It was awkward, at first. Naz isn’t easy to bond with. But over time they formed a sibling sort of relationship, though if Naz had been quiet before, it was nothing compared to the way she retreated into herself after losing both of her parents.
Ties to Derek Mitchell-Bach or Joshua Alcott? If there was one person who actually paid attention to Naz, it was Joshua Alcott, her fellow cello player. When she reflects on her high school years later in life, she won’t call them best friends or anything, but she will remember how kind he always was to her. Sometimes they would just sit in practice rooms adjacent to each other, offering each other a wave, checking on how each of their etudes are going along as they practice. Naz never went to parties, but the party that results in Joshua’s death is supposedly going to be a huge one, and her senior year, and she thinks maybe she should check it out. It goes about as she expects, with her mostly lingering on the edges. She tries to loosen up, it’s her last party after all, and she does break out of her shell a bit, talking to a few people, having a few drinks, even noticing that maybe a few people are interested in flirting with her. But then it happens, and Naz fully retreats back into her shell. She doesn’t really feel like she has any right to grief Joshua, but she does anyway, and after witnessing her third death in a few short years, she decides Mallory is cursed, and can’t wait to leave.
What were you like ten years ago? Ten years ago, Naz was very much an introvert. She was a girl with a huge imagination, usually living in her own fantasy world based on whatever book she was reading or story she was writing, and focusing on her music. She didn’t have many friends, but the ones she did she was very close with and loyal to. She’s a completely different girl from the one who now lives in New York City, as a high profile event planner, events based on the fantasy worlds people live in, like their dream weddings or sweet sixteens. She never really wanted to come back to Mallory, but after the news of Derek’s death, a boy who very much didn’t know she existed back in high school, she’s back to work remotely to see how her older brother figure is doing.
