“UHURU”

Despite his prep-school upbringing in the suburbs of Seattle, and widespread criticism of a variety of business practices, Ian Eisenberg—he prefers to be called Ike—has gone onto run Washington’s busiest pot shop business with what @SeattleTimes calls “the audacity of a circus master.” In 2015 the @UncleIkesPotShop location at Union St and 23rd Ave invited celebrated local muralist Joe Nix to paint this wall between its parking lot and @TheNeighborLady206 bar next door. With his usual attention to detail Nix staged a photo shoot of Uncle Ike’s ‘budtender’ Amanya wearing a t-shirt which reads 'Uhuru'—the Swahili word for freedom.  @joe.nix/  @uncleikesglassandgoods/

“EMBRACE AND STRUGGLE”

Born in Cork, Ireland, Conor Harrington has come a long way from his teenage “hip-hop nights” tagging and doing graffiti. Now working out of an East London studio he has incorporated inspiration from old masters into paintings that straddle classic and contemporary. Harrington painstakingly sets up photos of subjects for reference and in 2008 began to use historical costumes and re-enactments to reflect and comment on current affairs. In April, 2017, in the weeks leading up to the French election, Harrington joined the lineup of more than 20 international artists who had already participated in the Galerie Itinerrance-curated Street Art 13 project, to paint this 8-story building on Boulevard Vincent Auriol in Paris. Representing the duplicity “historically omnipresent in the world of politics” Harrington purposely does not reveal whether these two figures are locked in confrontation or friendly greeting.  @conorsaysboom  @galerie_itinerrance

“MOJADO”

Born in Portland, Oregon, but now living in Los Angeles, Aaron Noble is known for assembling semi-abstract compositions from bits of comic book art. At Melrose and Heliotrope in Los Angeles, in the parking lot behind Eric Berg’s Early California Antiques, Noble created “Mojado” in concert with a 2013 three-day show at now closed Synchronicity Space. He told Beautiful Decay that Mojado, Spanish for “wet”, has layers of meaning: referring to the wet painting technique with color and texture created in part with long drips of color poured down the wall, but also to the theme of border crossing and use of the term “wetback”—a theme perhaps more relevant than ever four years later. Combining his bent toward sci-fi with a design based on the Nahuatl pictographs for ‘River’, ‘Motion’, and ‘Drum’, Noble went on to say the design could depict “an entity that is somehow crossing into our dimension from the past and the future simultaneously.”  @aaronnoble
