Name assumptions

I had always assumed that Amandla Stenberg’s first name was just a variation on “Amanda,” and I didn’t like it for that reason. I just found out that it’s actually a Zulu name (and therefore has nothing to do with “Amanda”) and means “strength” or “power.” Her mother is American and her father is Danish so they probably wanted a name that would work in both languages as well. This is a good reminder for me not to make snap judgments about names. A name might seem “awkward” to me at first, but if I take the time to learn about the name’s meaning and what it means to the family, chances are I will see the beauty in it. The next time I come across someone whose name I don’t like right away, I should keep an open mind and remember that someone chose that name for them with love and care!
