When analysing Dragon Age and Mass Effect protagonists, I think everyone at some point in their life could associate themselves with Commander Shepard.
Imagine, you get a job you love and where you have to cooperate with other companies and manage a lot of people, and you do it well for the first year. You do shit your boss tells you to do because you still love it and its’ your job after all. But then the other company boss comes and keeps harassing you with his ideas and telling you that everything you did was wrong. The work you once felt proud of? Apparently, it wasn't good enough.
You’re revived into a position that feels eerily familiar but distinctly different.
At that point, you definitely feel like you died and somehow revived but in an altered form, feeling like a shadow of your past self. You see threats everywhere and all of a sudden you start asking yourself serious but dangerous questions - are your colleagues trustworthy? Are your relationships suffering because you’ve changed, or because they have? You continue to work, but you start having weird, stress-induced dreams, you feel like you're having a burnout because you're actually having one but refusing to accept it. You keep telling yourself you’re fine.
At some point, it breaks you. Maybe you don’t physically die like Shepard did, but you stop feeling like yourself. You go through the motions, doing what you have to, but it’s not the same. You look in the mirror, and you still see yourself, but it’s like something is missing. You stop trusting people as easily—who’s actually on your side? Who’s reporting back to the boss?
Now, let’s look at Dragon Age.
The Warden (DA:O), Hawke (DA2), and the Inquisitor (DA:I) are all thrown into leadership unwillingly, but their struggles feel different. They aren’t being forced into a never-ending corporate grind; they’re caught up in fate’s cruelty.
What separates Shepard from the Dragon Age protagonists is that Shepard’s struggle is eerily close to the reality of career burnout. The Dragon Age heroes get thrown into leadership, but they’re often reacting to the world’s chaos. They somehow have enough space and support to adapt to the new situation. Shepard, however, has to keep showing up for work, keep making decisions, and keep pretending everything is under control.
At some point in life, everyone feels like Commander Shepard. It’s not about saving the galaxy.
It’s about carrying an impossible weight while pretending everything is fine. And whether it’s work, relationships, or life in general, we’ve all been there.
I am Commander Shepard.

just woke up and can’t stop thinking about how shepard and kaidan probably never found each other again after everything. like, yeah, that’s the most realistic outcome, but realism has never hurt me this bad before

You ever finish a game or book so good that you just sit there, unable to start anything else, because nothing will ever compare?? What do you even do at that point??
