royal candidate mixup (a fic snippet)

hello,,, i wrote this spontaneously in like thirty minutes the other day for an idea me and some friends were cooking up,,, eventually id like to make this a full fic but for now theres just this draft so you all can have it ig :3

Emilia gently presses the insignia into the merchant’s hands again—Otto Suwen, he said his name was?—and as soon as she does, the gem in the center of it begins to glow red. Vivid red. The light matches the bow at the front of his cloak, and when the red fades in over his face, it contorts into complete and utter horror.  

“Is—is something the matter?” Emilia blurts out, hasty and stammering, before she flinches back and tries to compose herself. Focus. She’s a knight who just found one of the new Royal Candidates for the throne, and said candidate must be very disoriented at the thought of being thrust into the spotlight. It was already bad enough that she found him being mugged in an alleyway this morning! The poor boy; she would have been so scared as well. “I understand if you’re nervous,” Emilia says softly, “and I assure you that I’ll reaaally do my best to he—“

“No, no, no,” Otto rambles, his breaths quickening, the insignia threatening to drop from his hands. Beside him, his ground dragon makes a saddened little coo, but he pays her no mind, his fingers reaching up to his hair to tug at it. “N-No, I can’t possibly be a Royal Candidate! You—“ He looks back at Emilia, eyes wild. “You said that if the gem glows red, then I’ve been chosen, yes? But—but this must be some sort of sham, a sick and twisted joke! I’m no one important! I’m only a humble traveling merchant, I—I’m supposed to be on my way to getting my own store, and I can’t possibly be in charge of—“ A nervous laugh bubbles out of him. “Of an entire country, this is absurd—“

“Otto-sama,” Emilia murmurs, and she tries to reach out to him, but he recoils away from her. 

It stings for a moment; before, when he profusely thanked her for helping him away from those muggers, he didn’t even care one bit about her being the half-devil. He blushed and smiled and complimented her for her kindness as if he’s never seen all that much kindness before, as if it was as valuable as gold, and now, all Emilia has done has made him stressed beyond relief after she managed one good deed for the day. What kind of knight is she? Who is she to—

Otto’s eyes roll to the back of his head, and he crumples to the floor.

Compiled a bunch of Rezero AMV/MMD into a massive google doc because I know a bunch are on bilibili and nobody really knows how to navigate that site.

I haven't really finished cleaning up this list but it various links from Bilibili and Youtube, some of the videos on Bilibili are reupload from Youtube but the video link might've been privated so the person who upload it is not the original source. I will try to add a note next to the link for these cases but I might've missed a bunch.

If is any I missed out feel free to lmk so I can add it in!! I did try to separate videos accordingly but most of the Subaru centric video are usually IF story related and a lil hard to split since it mixed with various IF. To avoid spoilers I also split them to Arcs but if I missed any, do let me know too.

P.S. Some videos are in chinese and can probably only be understood if you knew chinese. I can offer some summary/translation but it gonna depend if I wanna :')

My review of Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 1:

To start with Tappei Nagatsuki's character and world building writing is really well done. I've rewatched the Re:Zero anime countless times over the years, but the amount of depth the novels go into in regards to Subaru's adjustment to his new setting and reasoning why he accepts it.

The small details such as Subaru's lacking desire to be a normal part of society due to the mounting stress he had to achieve his parents' desires. The way his confidence in his self got worse the older he got, and he hated his body, the older he got.

It all is done really well at characterising the smaller aspects of Subaru's personality that become increasingly obvious across the volume. The sudden insistence to just enjoy the new world is because he already was desiring an escape from his real life beforehand.

Subaru and Emilia 'Satella's first meeting is also portrayed so beautifully and it's fun to notice how hard Subaru had to work to get into Emilia's good graces across the first loop and being lucky, into needing to fight to earn that again during the third and fourth loops.

It goes to show how quickly Subaru adjusts to his surroundings and how well he can analyse other people. Yes, he may be able to revive and try again each time he dies, but he himself is a smart and intelligent person who improves himself very quickly.

I also like how the novels portray Emilia's struggle to fit into society, despite her beautiful appearance, and it foreshadows the struggles she has around her own body and identity that only become clear to Subaru much later on in the series.

Emilia's attachment to Subaru makes complete sense. However, she struggles to read into his intentions, which adds a layer of distrust towards his intentions but a desire to get to know him better and has hope he could be someone who'd accept and understand her.

The novels have so many small details which add a lot of weight to the character's motivations and the story. I'm excited to keep reading further as it's making me fall in love with the series even more than I already am.
