My review of Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 1:

To start with Tappei Nagatsuki's character and world building writing is really well done. I've rewatched the Re:Zero anime countless times over the years, but the amount of depth the novels go into in regards to Subaru's adjustment to his new setting and reasoning why he accepts it.

The small details such as Subaru's lacking desire to be a normal part of society due to the mounting stress he had to achieve his parents' desires. The way his confidence in his self got worse the older he got, and he hated his body, the older he got.

It all is done really well at characterising the smaller aspects of Subaru's personality that become increasingly obvious across the volume. The sudden insistence to just enjoy the new world is because he already was desiring an escape from his real life beforehand.

Subaru and Emilia 'Satella's first meeting is also portrayed so beautifully and it's fun to notice how hard Subaru had to work to get into Emilia's good graces across the first loop and being lucky, into needing to fight to earn that again during the third and fourth loops.

It goes to show how quickly Subaru adjusts to his surroundings and how well he can analyse other people. Yes, he may be able to revive and try again each time he dies, but he himself is a smart and intelligent person who improves himself very quickly.

I also like how the novels portray Emilia's struggle to fit into society, despite her beautiful appearance, and it foreshadows the struggles she has around her own body and identity that only become clear to Subaru much later on in the series.

Emilia's attachment to Subaru makes complete sense. However, she struggles to read into his intentions, which adds a layer of distrust towards his intentions but a desire to get to know him better and has hope he could be someone who'd accept and understand her.

The novels have so many small details which add a lot of weight to the character's motivations and the story. I'm excited to keep reading further as it's making me fall in love with the series even more than I already am.

Everyone who is getting excited over Rezero English React fics are back on the rise, y'all should also know the chinese fandom on LOFTER are so badly influenced by Rezero AO3 that they are also writing a bunch of react fics.

One chinese fan is such a big fan that they compiled a full completed list of Rezero React fics in chinese, english and even japanese. Unfortunately they didn't include my IQ react fic!! Why!! (jokes aside, it likely also because I did not tag the fic as a react fic and it not mainly ReZero HAH)

Surprisingly, there is actually one fully completed chinese rezero react fic that covers Arc 1-4 main story as well as all the IF routes, including Three Idiots: Cursed Goddess Statue SS. Instead of it being a simple theatre screening, the cast were thrown into a room where there is 6 doors present. Everyone have to go investigate the rooms in order to find tarot cards. If you want to try to read it yourself, you will have to create a LOFTER account which if you are not chinese, it might be a little difficult to create. But I will link it anyways here.

If anyone is interested, I don't mind sharing a simple summary of the fic, but I would not translate it as it is over 70 chapters including side content of Subaru hanging out with the other IF!Subarus where they temporarily returned to Japan, traumatized their parents, cried a lot, and then just as they thought they are going home, they somehow landed in Wrathbaru's world where they vibed in Pandemonium. The author kinda got lazy towards the end because in the final chapter of the main fic, they just skipped over to all of them going to Mainbaru's world.

To be honest what's crazy is that this same author who completed a react fic is now writing another one... Now based on puzzles... I have not read it but Imma be fr, react fics... Can indeed get boring over time... Even if it amusing...

About Satella and Subaru

Here's a small thought before I forget it; what if Satella met and fell in love with Subaru after she was sealed by the three heroes and not before? We don't know much about their relationship (for obvious reasons) but we do know that Subaru apparently saved Satella from loneliness/isolation and that Subaru doesn't remember doing anything like that.

Satella is still alive inside her seal and we know that she is somewhat aware of her surroundings - all of her interactions with Subaru so far prove that. Of all the times in Satella's life that she potentially could've been lonely, her time within the seal is the only time we know for certain that she is lonely. After all, for some time before she was sealed Satella was friends with the other witches and with the three heroes at the very least. I find it hard to believe that - if Subaru really did save Satella before she met her friends - Satella wouldn't have mentioned the man that meant so much to her to them. And yet none of the witches in the graveyard recognized Subaru in arc 4 nor did the (two out of three) heroes in arc 6. Subaru meeting Satella in the shadow garden would also explain why he don't know anything about his relationship with Satella - Subaru never remembers his time within the shadow garden.

I know that this idea has a lot of holes in it, like how every character of 400 years ago has some kind of memory problem, but I think it's worth considering since it's not impossible for something like this to happen.

Arc 9 situation

So Subaru got stuck in a marble huh? Got stuck in the same spell that captured the witch of envy? Got stuck in the same state as Satella who is not as frozen as everyone believes her to be?

(God please let them interact. I need more Satella interactions. She goes to Subaru when he messes up and when he calls surely she can go to him when he's in the same suspension state as she is right?)

messy anatomy studies 👀 im still practicing + these are very much not polished at all but 👀 i got all the hcs about them!! putting it under the cut (s3 spoilers will be alluded to here as well). i hope to do more anatomy studies of the adult characters eventually 👀👀

emilia: i picture her with a muscular build, similar to the build a fencer or dancer (and maybe a figure skater) could have (i also imagine julius like this, which at the time of this post i kinda drew here ) (<< ana is also in that drawing <3). this is to fit the grace she has in her fighting style, and also bc esp after arc 4 she becomes kind of a sword user in her own way as well !! and i think after she got to the mansion she started building muscle and she has steady food and more comfortable living conditions now and after her arc 4 glowup shes pretty built 👀 i also tried to keep a bit of her canon body type!! long legs and arms, curvy shape!

otto: he’s the second tallest in the emilia camp after roswaal, is known for being a lil clumsy (especially as a child), and generally does not have the healthiest lifestyle 😭😭 iirc its mentioned in a qna somewhere that his favorite flowers are edible ones bc when money was low thats what he’d eat. and of course he has his implied drinking problem, tendency to overwork, and while he knows basic self defense he was also not very physically active in the time skip so!! i picture him as very lanky and thin, probably has a lot of small scars (ex: scrapes on his knees and elbows), and big scars from a Certain Injury. gangly baby deer kinda energy—its also to differentiate him from other guys in rz around his age (reinhard i see as being all lean muscle while julius has more beefy muscle bc reinhards physical strength was given to him on a silver platter while julius worked for it).

rem: !! soft, rounded, strong legs and arms to do all the maneuvers she does and the amount of chores she does in that mansion, but again, soft to fit with her canon design. if i do ram in the future ill show rem and ram side by side—i think due to rams chronic illness she would have less fat and muscle than rem.

anastasia: i hc her as trans!! this lovely post by my mutual explains all of my reasoning for it very well. i hc that the “spots” i drew on her are scar tissue—iirc every time she uses magic, a bit of her od is sacrificed, and the body shows the toll it takes on (and her clothing generally has a lot of skin coverage!!). i put a good chunk of the scar tissue around her shoulders to mimic where she wears her. Scarf. and near her heart as well!! she also lived on the streets as a kid and i think it would show a little bit on her; shes still a little thin today (though i tried to keep her canon body type as well!!).

Hey what if Emilia becomes king because every other candidate dies? It's unlikely and it would be sad but also it's not like we expected what happened at the end of arc 8 to happen. So who knows really.

Emilia and Subaru were super cute together that first episode it really is a shame how their first meeting got erased. Maybe even more so for Emilia than for Subaru. From her perspective she had met a stranger that for once didn't have a negative reaction to her appearance. Even rarer than that a stranger that called her beautiful even after finding out she was a half elf.

In their short time together Emilia not only had a lovely time getting along with a stranger that wasn't obligated to treat her well (like Rem and Ram would've had to when they first met) but she wasn't lagging behind them either. Duo to being in the forest for a long time Emilia must've been pretty socially awkward at first but since Subaru also doesn't know how to socialize in Lugunica just yet the two were on the same boat. One could even say that Emilia was doing the better socializing out of the two which must've been nice for her.

Man if only that first loop could've been saved. It would've been so good! Does have some unfortunate consequences for arcs 2 and 3 though. Like how Subaru's first death would've been in the mansion making the whole arc just so much more confusing and heartbreaking for Subaru and how Emilia would be even more disadvantaged in the race for having lost the insignia.

rewatching re:zero. 15 minutes into the first episode. which is 50 minutes by the way. I don't think I picked up that Emelia was kind of into Subaru from the start at least in like the first first time they met. Like obviously Subarus into the pretty girl that helped him. but Emilia is also into the weirdo who cant read but doesnt have peasant hands or any money and just believed her fake name.

Ameila is like a chivalrous knight and Subaru is like a manic pixie dream girl in this episode.
