Instilling the Thanksgiving Spirit in Your Child
Yep, Thanksgiving is over. But that doesn’t mean that the attitude of gratitude has to die down in any way. In fact, it’s important to bond with your child and remind them that thankfulness should not spike and fall depending on the day, but rather be a consistent sentiment that should be embodied when the situation calls for it. This also leads to happier children who are aware of the blessings and privileges in their lives, as opposed to taking items and activities for granted and feel as though they lack certain advantages.
Other than the day of Thanksgiving, there are quite a few activities you can do with your child to teach them about gratefulness.
The Thankfulness Tree.
My aunt does this with my cousin, and I think it’s an incredibly cute and creative way to go about the idea! At the start of the year, she creates a two-dimensional tree trunk with empty branches and sticks it to one side of her wall. Then, every time my cousin has something to be grateful for — no matter how big or small — he writes it out on a leaf and pins it onto the branch or trunk. At the end of the year, they take an hour or two to appreciate everything that has happened to my cousin in the year. This may seem like a long-term game, but in actual fact, it teaches your child to be conscious of each day and the things that happen in it as opposed to simply going with the flow. Moreover, if you feel like a year is too long, you could create a smaller tree for weekly or monthly reflections instead.
Show, not Tell.
The key with kids, no matter their age, is to do more than you tell. Always thank your child for a task done, and show your gratitude to them so that they learn how to show it back. Teach them what “thank you” means, and why they should say it. It happens all too often, especially with Asian parenting, that we get shy with our thankfulness and love for children, and then expect gratitude from kids without having taught them how to express it.
Encourage Letter-writing.
Letter writing has benefits which are two-fold. First, it lets your child process their feelings so that they can write it down. This way, they’re outrightly acknowledging what they’re thankful for. Secondly, it teaches them how to show appreciation to others. Some children may be shyer than others, and it may not be as easy for them to give others a hug or an acknowledgement of thanks. This is where letter-writing steps in to show them that shyness is not a hindrance in expressing their feelings.
It has been proven that teaching children about gratitude reduce the tendency for “social comparison”, i.e. the notion of comparing their material goods with others. It can result in overspending, strained relationships, constant dissatisfaction and tantrum-throwing. Conversely, focusing on the positive side makes them more aware of their blessings and drives their focus away from material satisfaction. Lack of empathy and emotional awareness can lead to entitlement behaviour, and one way to counter that is to make them more in touch with their feelings and that of others. It’s not very difficult to teach gratitude and thankfulness to kids either: a few actions that they can follow will do the trick!

Picking Up New Skills in the New Year
I hear this often: “Nah, I’m too old for this.” Wayyyy too often. I think adults grow up to be so afraid of failure that we’re unable to experience the joy of simply enjoying something new without turning into a successful venture. With the new year, it’s no surprise that many of us will make a promise to ourselves, be it watching what we eat, exercising more, or spending more time with family. 2020 marks the start of another decade, however, and I want you to be fearless in pursuing what makes you happy! Don’t let less-than-perfect results daunt you away from being a better version of yourself. Always wanted to paint? Go out and buy a canvas. Wanted to learn a new language? Sign up for that course. Wanted to learn how to groove? No time better than now to join a dance class.
Before you decide it’s too late for you to pick up a new skill, or that you can’t afford some merriness, I want you to keep three things in mind:
There’s no price on fun.
Sometimes it feels like we shouldn’t indulge in a hobby because we don’t deserve to. We’ve spent too little time working, or too little time being productive for us to treat ourself with an activity that we can have fun with. But there shouldn’t be a reason to feel guilty if you’re happy!
Failure can be exciting!
The hobbies I enjoy the most now are the ones that I was initially so weak at. I love creating videos and graphics for fun, and when I first started playing around on Adobe softwares I was really poor at it. But the satisfaction is not actually in the result, it’s in the process of slowly challenging yourself (at your own pace) and learning something for the sake of it. Not because you have to produce results or because you should have more skills on your resume, but rather just because you like it. When you free yourself from expectations, there’s a liberation you feel that can’t be compared.
You come first.
We all need hobbies and activities that can provide us with some relief from our stress. Coming home from work only to spend it disengaged from anyone by passing time on social media or video streaming results in low levels of satisfaction, happiness, and motivation. Instead, engaging ourselves with motor activities like painting, playing an instrument or reading stimulates our emotions and thoughts, which results in us being more committed to our surroundings and our lifestyles.
As the cliche goes, the journey is every bit as rewarding as the destination. I would argue that it could be even more rewarding, with the way it develops and hones you. We don’t all have to be rock stars, and sometimes it’s enough if all our indulging does is make us happy. I hope that whatever it is you’ve been afraid to pursue doesn’t remain an obstacle anymore, and it makes you feel better or happier or more fulfilled, or all three, even. There is no time better for you to focus on you than now.

And... that's a wrap! Revel @ UE is closed for the holidays until January. It's been a fulfilling (almost) 6 months here for me. At a time when the world was bent on going strong on the internet, I took a risk and expanded Revel offline. Focusing on intangible results through tangible products. Soon I got to meet more like-minded individuals who appreciate beautiful things the old-fashioned way. Be it online, or offline, one thing remains - a lot of love goes into everything Revel offers... and that is what this season is all about. Love. So here's to the women and men who took a chance on Revel, and helped us make it what it is today. Thank you. It means the world to me. P.s.: Am still accepting self-collections until 23/12 at Sengkang, and orders are still fulfilled via Singpost. However, please, please note that postage takes a little longer at this time of year. — view on Instagram https://scontent.cdninstagram.com/v/t51.2885-15/sh0.08/e35/p640x640/80577641_2432390887078510_4503807975226947241_n.jpg?_nc_ht=scontent.cdninstagram.com&_nc_ohc=keazWQoXoe8AX9lvntN&oh=d3dabd160b903e5345979320f8ff3578&oe=5EB07275

Giving Thanks to Loved Ones
The year is drawing to a close. Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons are upon us, and a cheery atmosphere has started to befall upon all of us. Affection for friends and family generally runs high at this time, as do periods of reflection, growth, and understanding. I’m not great at expressing myself emotionally, but I do my best to express gratitude to people who have supported me and given me the strength to continue in my pursuits. And the end of the year really is such an optimal time to express your thanks. As another year draws to a close, I want to encourage you to take a step forward in outwardly cherishing the people or the causes that mean a lot to you.
Send a letter/message of thanks.
Sending your family members or friends a message or card remains to be an exceptionally sweet thing to do. This makes them feel cared about, and it lets them know that you don’t take anything they do for granted. It’s simple and small, yet such a thoughtful step that you’re bound to make them feel appreciated.
Create a Thank You board or a Gratitude Journal
Sometimes its difficult to see all that we should be grateful for because we feel loaded with negativity and worries about our life instead. At times like these, a Thank You board or a gratitude journal go a long way in resetting your perspective and having a more optimistic outlook on your life. It’s not easy when you start out, but start by slowly filling out these boards. Post your favourite photos, or write down excerpts about the things and people you feel thankful for. Not only does this give you a more positive reframing, it also strengthens your bond with the people around you and your surroundings.
Pay it forward
There’s no time like now to support a charity or a cause or donate some blood that you had been thinking about getting down to do. Charity does not have to be overt or extravagant, and neither does it always have to be solely monetary. You could spend time at food kitchens to aid in making food, or you could do something as effective as a beach clean-up. Other than that, there are numerous organisations out there that would take in donations, food, and/or vouchers to make the lives of their subsidiary recipients easier.
Personally, I have many things I would want to change about how my 2019 has gone, but the one realisation I’ve had is that I truly have some friends that I am ultimately very, very grateful to have. Reflecting upon their generosity and understanding, I want to take the remaining time left in this year to appreciate the acts of kindness and love I’ve had the honour to have, and I hope you have the chance to do so. It creates a deeper bond between you and your life, and the person you believe yourself to be.
