A hike from Kåfjord near Alta, northern Norway. I (Mads) was lucky to get the chance to record the sounds of wind, creaking walls and birds at the old Northern Lights Observatory, and to stay the night there, alone but with my Zoom H6 recorder keeping me company. The recorded sounds were used the day after in our Nordic Symposium on Tourism workshop, where we discussed and interacted with the participants about the role that sounds play for the experience of (touristic) places.

Here in late September, Ana and Mads held a workshop at UiT - The Arctic University of Norway, Alta. The theme was Sound, Listening and Affect in Tourism. Participants were tasked with finding and recording sounds, and to reflect on how sound sets a mood, creates an atmosphere or even how sounds can ‘push you around’ - for the latter, we used a SubPac wearable subwoofer and wind recordings from the nearby mountain of Halddetoppen. The subwoofer gives a sense of the physicality of sound, and how sounds are not just information sources, but a physical structure that moves the body.

This is a fine little piece on sound tourism, and how consumer electronics shape the way in which we listen to the world around us.

This movie is the first artefact coming out of our project with the Witches’ Museum in Ribe. With the movie, we attempt to draw attention to the way in which sounds may touch us and possibly create new affective connections to history and heritage.
