I just spent three hours pulling up carpet and staples for a friend’s home renovation and we all did nothing but chat and joke and have wonderful conversation the whole time.

Helping somebody move or renovate or giving them a ride to the airport is functionally the same as going mini-golfing or playing a board game: it’s an activity that you do that is made more fun by having good company, and which provides something to talk about when the conversation lulls.

Helena Harper x Reader - hybrid au

"She's a rescue." You stare wistfully out into the park, watching Helena complete her daily laps. One more lap, then you can head to breakfast - and you can leave the chatty stranger who'd plopped next to you on the bench far behind.

The woman coos softly, sad, pigeon-like expression of contrition. It's your go-to when people won’t stop asking questions about your hybrid. Make them too sad to pry.

It’s working especially well on this woman. She's too meek to press for more. She definitely wants to, got that gleam in her eye that just screams I love tragedy, but there's just enough shame in her not to fish for details.

Helena trots to a stop in front of you. The front of her tank is stained with sweat, clinging to her, the ends of her floppy ears dripping - plip, plip, plip - to the sidewalk.

You pass her water bottle over before she even extends a paw for it.

“You are so brave,” the woman beside you says.

Helena's eyes narrow. She stares at you down her nose, trying her very best to convey that she isn't pleased. It's difficult to take her seriously when her fur is all puffed up, face flushed, and tail still languidly swishing.

It takes every effort to contain your amusement. You're up to your eyeballs in mirth, biting your lip so it doesn’t bleed into your smile.

The woman next to you gathers up her things, saying goodbye to you and flashing Helena another pitying smile. Helena's tail goes stock still. You wave goodbye to your newest acquaintance. She's barely out of earshot when Helena gives you an earful.

“Stop telling people I'm from a puppy mill.”

“I didn't.” Not this time, anyway.

“I bust puppy mills.”

“Aw, I know. You don't have to prove yourself to me.” You reach out to ruffle her ears and she ducks away from your hand, eyes narrowed. “Who's a good girl?”

The tip of her tail swishes. Her jaw clenches. She drains her water bottle in a long pull and shoves it back into your hands. You tuck it into your bag and rise, starting off in the direction of your usual diner. She falls into step behind you, still sulking.

A grin erupts across your face when you hear her quiet grumble.

“Me. I am.”

"The struggle to keep one of the world’s largest and rarest antelope species alive has taken a massive step forward in Kenya.

17 mountain bongos have been flown to Kenya from the Rare Species Conservation Center in Florida for eventual reintroduction into their natural habitat.

A subspecies of bongo, the largest of the forest-dwelling antelope, the eastern, or mountain bongo, numbers less than 100 individuals, and is listed by the IUCN as Critically-Endangered. More survive today in zoos than in the wild.

The history of the animal is an interesting one, as it’s believed to have become a forest species when climate change turned savannah areas into forests thousands of years ago. In the case of the mountain bongo, their home range is located in southern Kenya, on the slopes of Mount Kenya National Park and in the surrounding woodland.

They are the world’s third-largest antelope species behind the giant eland and common eland.

Tourism Minister Rebecca Miano described the arrival of the bongos at the country’s main airport on Sunday night as “emotional and so cool.”

The animals will first be kept in an acclimation center run by the Kenyan Wildlife Service (KWS) that will protect them while they re-hone their instincts for wild living.

Within three months, the BBC reports, the KWS will be welcoming another shipment of these bongo from captive breeding programs across Europe.

The last time a large shipment of animals like this made it to Kenya was in 2004, when 18 animals arrived safely. They successfully integrated with the wild population, and though some died of tick-borne diseases, it demonstrated that captive animals can successfully make it in the wild if given time and training."

First render of 2025!! Yes, even if we’re at the end of February, this is my very first render of this year. I decided to make this one after playing RE6 after 10+ years of not playing it, and I had fun playing it in the holidays and then the first weeks of January (a looooot of fun. Mercenaries is GREAT). Coincidentally, this year marks the 10 anniversary of me doing renders, so I wanted to recreate my first digital image ever!!
