“Oh Diana,” she laughs, like she just heard the silliest question; and considering the situation, it just might have been. “…with Walker in the middle of the conversation, everything pales out.” She gives half a shrug and takes a sip of her white wine. This entire process was the perfect moment to take the Republicans out of the spotlight and it gave them a chance to breath fresh air for a second. Adelaide fully intended to use this break to move as faster as she could, because once the new president took over — she was so sure of Walker’s conviction — things would be much harder.
“Besides, you only did your job, as any Good American would.” She rubbed Diana’s arm, supportive and caring; for all she knows, the evidence was glaring, yes, and Walker would have trouble defending herself, but Diana was bolder than the rest of GOP and Adelaide wanted her to know that, regardless of the outcome, she would stand by her side. “Don’t worry about it. You have friends on the Senate too, who will take care of your reputation.”
“Oh of course I did,” diana agreed.  She’d never admit to the ulterior motives of her actions.  After all, covering up Walker’s crimes would be just as bad as pushing the investigation forward for the sake of insuring her own career could improve.  Granted, there was a very short list of people who knew the details of what happened, anyone with a brain could make the assumption Diana did this for some sort of political move.
She sighed, shaking her head slightly.  “I certainly hope so, but you know how the press will spin things.”  Especially if the extreme liberals got mouthy and didn’t stop to think that maybe their precious POTUS could be just as corrupt as the rest of them.  Perhaps even worse.  After all, Walker did get caught.  “I know you’ve got my interests at heart, and I’m counting on Sarah Jane as well.”

He can’t help but feel anxious here, though it was his father’s party. That was in fact part of the problem: these were his father’s friends. Or rather, his father’s allies. His father had told him that he didn’t really care for most of these people, but that they were useful to him. People were useful, his father had taught him. Or at least, he had tried. He doesn’t know if he was cut out for politics like father was. He’d been getting accustomed to running a business when his father had pushed him to run. He agreed, because he always did. He’s nursing a half drunk glass of champagne, a convenient excuse to rush to the bar when he wanted to. A lot of people were coming up to him, of course more interested in his father than him. Which he was fine with. He can see a senator approaching him from across the room and he quickly looked around to try and find a familiar, friendly face, eventually settling on Diana. He quickly went up to her, flashing her a friendly smile. “It’s nice to see you, Mrs. Hartley,” he greeted her politely. “Are you having a good time?”
@rephartley
These parties were something Diana got used to even long before she became Representative Hartley.  As Douglas’ arm candy she’d bumped shoulders with the Republican elite and now it all paid off.  She had connections to help move her into the position she needed.  Now, with Walker’s impeachment just beginning, she was finally in the right place at the right time.
She had just stepped away from chatting with a lobbyist when Henry Sanford appeared.  she offered him a smile, red lips curling as she watched him.  He was young, but his father wielded power in a way that could be useful for her future.  “I am!  It’s a lovely party and it’s wonderful to see you.  Your father certainly knows how to celebrate.”

Her anger is justified, he has to give her that. This is way worse on her — and her career — than it is on him; like most things are. “It won’t.” But his voice is equally sharp. It feels like throwing blades at her, but he thinks that it’s just a defense mechanism against her words. It doesn’t matter how bad he becomes, around Diana; it always feels that he’s way behind her. “I didn’t plan to tell her anything, I just…” he stops, hesitating.
With a sigh, he confesses. “I couldn’t go there alone, you know? The clinic.” He fears her reaction, because the last time things between them got personal and intimate, he was unfair to her. He dreads the idea that she will be just as bad to him; or knowing Diana, she would be even worse. Still, he owes her an explanation, because their secret is now out there. “And how could I justify me getting a DNA test?” This had been exhausting to him. Why should he put himself to the test? Why couldn’t he just assume that this was just another of Diana’s lies and move on with his life?
He shook his head, and put his hand on the table, reaching for hers, before remembering that he should do that and pull it back, unceremoniously. “Nothing is gonna happen, Diana, don’t worry.” He trusts his sister way more than he trusts anyone else in the world. He chose her specifically because of this anyway. Yet, he can’t complain, because Diana has a point. She has a reason to worry. “Alejandra liked you before, and she still likes you now. We are playing on the same team here.” Deep down, Fernando feels glad that he has something to hold over her head now, a power he didn’t anticipate. She can have Isabelle, but he can have her career. He immediately feels bad about it, and regrets this. “Nothing is gonna change, okay?” he jumps, desperate to change subject. “We don’t need to talk about that anymore.”
Tumblr media
Rage bubbled just below the surface.  He tried to rationalize it, to excuse what he did, like he needed someone there to hold his hand.  He was the one who asked for the test.  If he didn’t want to do it alone then he shouldn’t have pushed for it at all.  He should have either taken her word for it or dismissed her.  At this point, Diana didn’t care which.  All she cared about was knowing it was a secret.  It was safe, but it wasn’t anymore.  Even if his sister had liked her, how much of that would remain once it was confirmed she kept Fernando’s daughter away from him for a decade.
Jaw tight, Diana’s gaze swept over him and she huffed.  “Nothing is going to change.  You’re right.  I’m going to get an NDA drafted for your sister to sign.”  This was bullshit.  The fact that she had to jump through these hoops....it was too much.  “The thing I don’t understand, Fernando, is why did you have to tell her it was an affair?  She knew we were together.  Why didn’t you just tell her i found out after we ended things and wasn’t sure if it was yours or someone else’s?  You did this intentionally when you could have avoided something this damaging getting out.”
That irritation wasn’t going to fade, even when he suggested they change the subject.  There was nothing she could do now to make sure she’d enjoy this dinner and try to be civil with Fernando for Isabelle’s sake, not when her mind was on the press release she needed drafted just in case his sister got pissy and talked to the wrong person.  Lifting a hand, she rubbed at her temple.  “I don’t know how you think we can make this civil if you can’t stop for one minute to think about what this could do?”

@rephartley
There was a great pleasure in doing things after being told you couldn’t do them.
When Sarah Jane was fifteen, Daddy’s men captured a wild horse that had wandered too close to the ranch. A big, beautiful beast. Frantic. She and her sisters weren’t allowed anywhere near him. You can’t ride him, Sara, he’s dangerous. Daddy’s best grooms were thrown off, and even Daddy himself was hesitant. Until one night, during the annual summer ball at the Brandt residence, Sarah Jane sneaked off to the stables. She rode, alright. Dug the spurs into the horse’s side and slashed, slashed, slashed. When she jumped off his back, he was shaking. So were her parents and all their friends who had rushed out to see Thomas Brandt’s dainty teenage daughter skip towards them, her lavender gown soaked in froth and blood. You can ride him now, Daddy, she said sweetly and went to wash her hands.
When Sarah Jane was twenty-four and falling in love, Daddy raged. You can’t marry that man, Sara, he’s beneath you! She told him it was either her and Fredrik or neither. She meant it too. Daddy walked her down the aisle the following spring, smiling.
And when he said, You can’t just turn the whole country upside down, Sara, she immediately marched upstairs and called Diana Hartley. Then they did.
“Most are still playing it safe in public, but privately, they’ve been opening up,” Sarah Jane was saying, a glass of sweet tea in hand. “So many people have reached out this week. Talked about the doubts they had, the rumors they’ve heard.”
They were sitting on the Hartleys’ porch, watching the children play. Henry threw the football, Alexander tried to catch it, but it went right over his head and landed in Hanna-Sofie’s confident arms. Sprawled on a blanket making flower crowns for Mikael, Savannah, Izzy, and Erik all began to laugh.
She glanced sideways at Diana, the softness in her expression slipping into a look of fierce determination. “We need to get more high-profile officials to support the impeachment publicly, though.” She wasn’t implying Diana. Oh no, Diana had done and was still doing her part. Now it was up to Sarah Jane to make sure her dear friend was hailed as the heroine she was. But she couldn’t manage that alone. “My husband, the Coopers, the Democrats losing faith in her,” she clarified. “It’s time we start acting less like the Home of the Diplomatic and more like the Home of the Brave.”
Tumblr media
When the topic had been first broached, Diana could hardly believe it was something they could consider.  But the proof was there and the incentive to do the right thing was too strong to resist.  Though was bringing up the bill to get the impeachment process started really doing the right thing?  What Walker had done was nothing worse than things Diana herself had accomplished in her lifetime.  the democrats and their hypocrisy.  They loved to claim they were above corruption and that was something only the dirty republicans stooped to.  here was the proof that was a blatant lie.  Diana was thrilled.  It meant pushing things forward for all of them, but especially for herself.  She owed it all to Sarah Jane.
Laughter filled her ears as the children played.  it was a nice change from the chaos filling Capitol Hill since Diana made the first move.  Now the ball was in Sarah Jane’s court.  No doubt that the woman could handle it.  The committee was full of those they could trust and those Democrats who would want to save face when public opinion turns.  It was a situation that could easily end well for them.  They just had to play their hand correctly.
The small smile on her lips faded as she lifted her sweet tea to her lips, the ice cubes clinking in the glass when she lowered it back down.  “Well, if we can get them all on our side that will be a good step in the right direction,” she told her.  “I think we need to mobilize the public.  Have as much of this investigation done right in full view of the average american.  They’ll be incensed by Walker’s actions and hopefully will push people to denounce her sooner than later.”  After all, public opinion could be a powerful weapon when they used it.
“I can ask around.  Get a feel for what people are thinking.”  Briefly she thought of asking Fernando, but was it worth it? Did she want to play that card?

His reply is as dry as her question. “I’m good too.” He nods, avoiding her eyes, looking down, looking to his side, down at his hands again, searching words to fill the silence that stretches before him. “Working hard.” If it didn’t bother her, it certainly bothered him. He was confident that she would do everything in her power to annoy him and god it was working.
She wasn’t willing to open herself and neither was he. Even though this was perfectly expected, a part of him was still clinging to the hope that they could have solved it magically and would be best friends by now — not that he wanted that. It was the better for Isabelle; he knew that. And for her alone he would have made the effort.
“Listen…”, he begins, rather hesitant. He owes it to her. To make an effort to not be a piece of shit this time. “I’m sorry.” He doesn’t specify for what, but Diana knows; she has to know. “I’m just worried about so many things, and… this…” he gestures at her, but he means more than that. “This has been driving me insane, Diana.” It’s not like he spends his waking hours punishing himself for not discovering it sooner, but how could he?
He takes a deep breath, because he knows that she’ll have a bad reaction to this: “I told my sister we had an affair.” And if he were being honest, she was entitled to. No one deserved to be meddling in their own private business; but if she had known him at all, she would know that he couldn’t keep secrets from family.
Tumblr media
Diana was surprised when Fernando apologized.  She didn’t think he had it in him and assumed he was always in the right.  That stubbornness was something she had once liked about him and now it just irritated her.  Still, his effort to apologize for what happened last time was appreciated.  After all, she had tried to open up herself to him and be honest, yet he laughed in her face.  How was that being the bigger person and putting the right foot forward for the sake of their daughter?  Diana wasn’t sure what he was thinking.
However, before she could thank him for his apology he admitted he told his sister about the affair.  What the fuck?  She may have met a few of his family members over the time they were together but this....telling her?  “Why the hell would you do that?” she asked quickly, her tone sharper than she intended.  Did Fernando not realize what anyone knowing about her affair could do to her career?  “You know what that getting out could do to me and you just....told your sister.  And to think I was almost grateful you were apologizing.”  She rolled her eyes.  Was he trying to sabotage her career?  It certainly felt like that.
There was a part of her that wanted to get up and leave.  Clearly he couldn’t respect what she wanted to protect her career and her ability to provide for her children.  Maybe she should have killed him.  That would have solved some of her problems at least.  “What were you thinking?”  Getting up and storming out wouldn’t do any good.  They were stuck dealing with this and Diana hated it.

Scouring the lower level beings exiting and entering the building wasn’t normally what you’d find Sofia doing on her day off. Perhaps a bar, shopping spree. Reminding the tenant beneath her condo she has incriminating photos that would expose an affair. Glass of champagne on her balcony, enjoying the sun setting over another day in DC. All fun things. Paper stretched out on one of the many small tables saddled along the street, as she flipped absentmindedly through—one story after the other all read the same: WALKER IS FINISHED.
It was like Christmas for the Strategist, barely hiding her glee. And a lifted glance to spot a small group of six or so reporters flocking the steps, as the blonde descended. Sit back, watch the show? Possibly any other boring day in the city. Sofia stood, tossing the paper in the nearest trash pin, as heels scuffed the pavement as she jogged, crossing the busy street to reach the other side. By the time she made it, the burgeoning questions hit her ears, as she filtered through the small crowd, shoving a photographer out of her way.
“Now, now—I’m sure any and all questions Representative Hartley wants to answer, she’ll do in all due time. It’s five o’clock, she has a family—so find someone else to bother.” Spoken sweetly, shining smile as she gestured to the woman behind her. “I’ve an UberLUX waiting at the curb—save you the headache.”
Tumblr media
@rephartley
Maybe she should have anticipated exactly how much attention would be on her when she agreed to bring the articles of impeachment forward.  Or at least get the Speaker on board when she brought them so they could be voted on.  It would be excellent for her career, if only SJ could close it in the Senate.  If Walker was exonerated, well, then Diana’s career would take a hit.  She was gambling on it but she had faith.  After all, Walker was guilty.  There was no doubt about that.
So the swam of reporters wasn’t a huge surprise but they were insistent and Diana was losing her patience.  It was becoming harder for her to keep up a front, to pretend she was just the sweet housewife they thought she was.  Thank god for Sofia Russo.  She appeared and Diana was at her side soon.  “Aren’t you an angel?” she asked as she stepped closer.  The vultures backed off and she flashed them a smile.  “Reach out to my office if you’d like to schedule time,” she told the reporters before her attention shifted back to Sofia.
“Now if you had Tylenol I’d say you’re a witch working these miracles,” Diana joked.

The senator’s extravagant party was held at The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown on the evening of the 20th. Unlike some people, he hadn’t needed to beg to get an invitation (even snagging an extra one for Anne). It felt a little strange to a party considering what was currently happening politically, and he can’t help but feel even more on edge considering his recent promotion. He imagined Silas might have been a bit offended if he didn’t show up. Tonight’s event was proof of all the people who supported him ― and his campaign for the nomination. So like a good pal, he was here.  He wandered over to a familiar face by themselves. “You waiting to get a minute with the man of the hour?” He asked with a friendly smile, eyes wandering to Silas Sanford surrounded by a gaggle of senators. “Or for the line at the bar to free up?” The smile shifted into an easy grin as he looked at his companion.
While Diana was as fond of big parties and celebrating herself as the next person, she couldn’t help but wonder if it was done in slightly poor taste given the whole Walker thing.  Not that she didn’t have a big piece to play in that.  Diana had played the room, talking to donors and lobbyists interested in a moment of her time.
When Alexander approached she looked up, a small smile on her features.  “Either or,” she told him honestly.  “Whichever frees up first is where I’ll go first.”  No doubt she’d make the rounds to both the bar and wishing Silas a happy birthday before the day ended.

Red wine in hand, Diana sipped from the glass as she looked over at Adelaide.  Perhaps one of the ones she trusted the most and kept the closest, Diana was curious to hear how things would be moving now that the ball was in the senate’s court.  Diana did her job.  She got the votes, presented the evidence and would either be hailed as a hero or a villain when all was said and done.  Now it was out of her hands.  They had to shake the tree and see what fell out.  But with what had already been found, Diana wasn’t too worried, yet.
“I can count on you to make sure I don’t end up painted like some sort of Disney Villain in these investigations, right?” she asked over the rim of her glass.  “That’s the last thing I need for trying to do my job and uphold moral decency in the White House.”

Coming off getting the Articles of Impeachment approved, Diana felt like she was on a high.  Was there anything she couldn’t do?  Now she had fully stepped out of her husband’s shadow.  Now she was doing things for herself.  Diana was thrilled.  If everything went according to plan she could count on her powerful friends to keep rising her through the ranks.
Laura was one such powerful friend.  These were the women Diana wanted to rely on and respect.  They were the ones who knew the struggles Diana overcame to get where she was.  Laura, SJ, Addie...they all had done it and Diana wanted it just as badly.  She could write her name on the hall of history or die trying.
“I have to ask,” Diana started as she sat there, watching Laura’s expression.  “What’s the general consensus in the administration?  Have they realized how fucked they are?”

He didn’t even notice that he was holding his breath, but the exhale as Diana says that yes, she hasn’t forgotten him is pure relief. An involutary smile pops up, so he looks down at the menu. It has come to the point where he is afraid of showing any kind of emotion around Diana. Lord only knows how she could twist that around and make it a weapon to hurt him.
“I can help her.” He volunteers, too quickly, and then rethinks his offer. “I mean… maybe.” He doesn’t want to make any promises. Sure, he loves the kid, yes, but being around her after her being the center piece of another one of Diana’s lies… That was too much even for Fernando.
“Maybe we should order first.” he asks, gesturing to the waiter to come to their table. He doesn’t wait for a reply from her and just jumps into his own order. He almost wants to ask for red wine, but that could bring back the memories of the night that Theresa died and he doesn’t want to twist the knife even further, even though he’s sure Diana deserves it. “How have you been?” He asks once she’s done, because this could be the first part of the rest of their lives, and as much as he hates it, he knows he has to be civil to her.
Tumblr media
There was something almost satisfying about his hesitance to get close to Isabelle.  While she would do anything for her daughter, Diana also knew having Fernando back in her life would make everything that much more complicated.  She didn’t want that, but she couldn’t get out of it either.  She made her bed and now she had to lie in it.
He pushed for them to order, Diana relented.  She knew he wanted to get over with this and throw away pretense.  It was something she could understand, but not when they were meeting in public.  Honestly, Diana didn’t particularly want to see him.  She’d opened up herself to him the last time she saw him and he laughed in her face.  How was that fair?  It was something she’s grappled with for a long time, but if nothing else Fernando’s reaction was enough proof that she did the right thing.
Once the food was ordered and the waiter had left the table, Diana sighed.  “Fine.  Busy, you know, with everything.”  She didn’t want to share the details of her work with someone on the opposite side.  Diana Hartley was a lot of things, but she wasn’t a fool.  Especially now. “How about you?”

Obviously her reply is very straightforward, and Fernando nods, agreeing, because he didn’t care about what the staff thought of them, but he can’t help but to credit her on it, because it would have been a bad look on them.
Picking up his menu, thanking the opportunity to hide himself behind it. How to talk in a situation like this? It strikes him as odd that once they could sit and talk and don’t worry about it. Now nothing between the two of them seems natural, with Fernando constantly overthinking, expecting another punch coming from the dark. Being with Diana has became the most mentally challenging game he’s ever played. Somehow, that made him on get more engaged with it.
“How is she?” He finally asks. It took him less than five minutes to bring Isabelle — and it’s only fair, because this is all about her.  "Has she… asked…“ He’s hesitant, as afraid of her possible rejection as he is afraid of the test resuts, positive or negative. "About me, I mean.” There is no point that she would miss me, he thinks, and then reminds himself of the weeks they spent together, the entire weekends with her at the park, and suddenly he just wants to get over with it, so he can finally treat her like she deserves, like his daughter.
Tumblr media
It was awkward.  The tension hung in the air between them and Diana found herself missing the way it used to be, before everything fell apart.  Back before feelings got involved and fear overtook Diana’s instincts.  Oh how different things would have been then.  She’d laid it all out, her heart bare before him the last time they were truly alone and he laughed.  Diana didn’t want to admit that it hurt.
He spoke and there was a bitter part of Diana that wanted to tell him she hadn’t asked at all, that she’d all but forgotten the time they’d spent together.  It wasn’t true.  Isabelle had asked a few times and Diana dismissed her questions, telling her Fernando was busy and would come by when he had more time.  It wasn’t the truth, but did she dare tell her daughter he didn’t want to see her right now?
“She did,” Diana instead decided on, nodding once.  Her blonde curls bounced ever so slightly as a sigh passed her lips.  “She was wanting another Spanish lesson.  Apparently they offer it in her middle school and she wants to take it, but wants to have a head start.”
