Sun Prairie WI is the fastest growing city in Wisconsin. In the shadow of the State Capitol it is literally just “across the road” from Madison WI. It offers all the opportunities of city life while retaining its small town charm. Northeast of Madison, the city boasts a diverse population of nearly 34,000 residents. Apartment Move-in Checklist – Who To Tell You’re Moving
If you’ve moved before you know – if this is your first move, you’re learning – an apartment move-in checklist is a valuable tool. Whether you’re moving into a larger space or downsizing in Madison WI, there are a lot of things to keep track of. To-do projects for before, during and after your move.
An important and easily overlooked task is formal notification of all the people, places and organizations you communicate with. You have to share your new address with government agencies, local businesses, family and friends.
Whether you’re a fan of “snail mail” or not the U.S. Postal Service should be on top of the list. You want to be sure you get your mail forwarded to your new apartment. The Post Office will forward First Class mail for a year and magazines/newspapers for two months. You can arrange for additional time.
Move-in Checklist For Alerting Agencies
Almost everyone’s life is closely tied to governmental, municipal and service organizations. Each requires a mailing address to continue service. There are several levels – local, county, regional, state, federal, etc. Here’s a brief list of important contacts to update:
Post Office – make sure your forwarding information is on file and the local office knows your new residence.
The Tax Man – notify the Federal IRS, state revenue agency and any local taxing organizations.
Employers – if you are changing jobs along with changing addresses your orientation paperwork will include your new address. However, if you’re staying with the same employer you’ll have to update its HR personnel files.
Social Security – another tax-related agency that figures in your life.
Motor Vehicles Department – Wisconsin state law gives you a limited amount of time to change your address on a drivers’ license and official documents. You’ll need to get a new license complete with a new photo.
Depending upon your age, marital status and military history there are other specific considerations:
For older Americans – Medicare Administration, federal and state pension and benefits offices
Current of former members of the military – Department of Veteran’s Affairs
Some individuals must stay in touch with the unemployment insurance office while others most stay current with U.S. Customs and Immigration Service. Still others need to connect with family support agencies.
Contacting Service Providers
It takes time for most service organizations to make changes and schedule installations. With the timing in mind, make sure important utilities are on your “must do” list. You don’t want to pay for service you don’t get. Nor do you want to go without. Keep these in mind:
Telephone – provide new billing address for both cell phone and landline if you’ll have one. If you’re including a landline, schedule an installation date.
TV provider – cable, satellite or streaming services need to keep up-to-date contact information.
Internet provider – it is hard to imagine getting along without internet access for very long. Keeping these key providers up-to-date is vital.
Utilities – depending upon the arrangement you have with landlords, you need to be sure billing addresses are accurate with electric companies, gas providers, the water company, etc.
Publications – if you regularly receive trade magazines, popular magazines, newspapers or other regular mailings you’ll have to keep their circulation departments updated.
If you’re a student you’ll have to notify your school of your new address. In addition, make sure to keep the following current:
Banks
Credit Card Companies – credit reporting agencies
Loan holders – student loans, car loans, etc.
Insurance companies – for your vehicles, specialty equipment and rental space
Investment advisors/brokers
Civic clubs, social organizations and professional associations
Membership groups – AAA, AARP, alumni groups
Your church
If you have a family, don’t forget these:
Children’s schools
Daycare providers
Children’s clubs, teams and organizations

On a family business level, make sure to update your contact information with:

In today’s stress-filled world pets play an increasingly important role and pet-friendly apartments are in great demand. Whether you’re a dog person, a cat person or favor other pets there are locations throughout Madison WI and Dane County to welcome you. Pets and “comfort” animals come in all sizes and shapes. They adapted well to apartment living as long as they have their basic needs covered. All a cat really needs is food, fresh water and a clean litter box. The advantages of cats in apartments include:
They don’t need a “walk” – cats require very little exercise and can get what they need indoors.
Most cats are quiet – except Siamese breeds and mixes, cats are relatively quiet. Even when they’re not it is unlikely they’ll be heard next door. Even the Siamese aren’t loud, just “chatty.”
Cats are independent – a cat will entertain itself so provide it with plenty of toys.

Dogs or cats are not for everyone. There are many creatures that also make good apartment pets. Among the most popular are:
Fish – constantly in motion, aquarium fish are relaxing and colorful. Watching fish can actually lower your blood pressure (not an accident aquariums are popular in the offices of doctors and dentists). Keeping fish comes with routine maintenance requirements – cleaning, feeding, etc. Drawbacks in an apartment include the risk of spills – leading to stains, mold, mildew, etc. if not handled appropriately.
Birds – birds take up little space but they require attention and maintenance. In addition some are noisy and some very loud. Smaller birds are a better choice than large ones – their daily requirements and sound level match  their size.
Little furry friends – hamsters and guinea pigs require small enclosure. They benefit from interaction with their owners. Because most are nocturnal they’ll be most active at night when you’re around – or when you’re trying to sleep. They enjoy “play time” so beware the squeaking exercise wheel.
Reptiles/Amphibians – snakes and turtles are not among the most popular pets but they do adapt to apartment living. Snakes need a secure enclosure and plus food, water, warm temperatures and plenty of light.

Campus Area Living Attracts Young And Old
The benefits to students and faculty UW campus area living are obvious. In addition, apartment life near this center of Madison WI culture makes sense for young professionals and anyone looking to enjoy the city. Madison is regularly ranked high among U.S. cities for all sorts of reasons from culture to scenery and its college-town atmosphere. Chzen Museum of Art – located on campus its permanent exhibits include paintings, sculptures, drawing and watercolors. In addition there are strong representations of prints, photography and decorative arts. The collection includes works by Rodin and Gainsborough. The prized facility regularly hosts traveling exhibitions as well as an excellent chamber music program.
Madison Museum of Contemporary Art – on the corner of State and Henry Streets this facility is a piece of art in its own right. Its three-story glass façade looks like the bow of a ship jutting into mainstream USA. Its constantly rotating exhibits include works from local and international artists.
Madison Children’s Museum – exhibits for fun and education are the hallmark of this place. A recent project, Coops to Cathedrals, allowed children to interact with the works of Wisconsin’s own Frank Lloyd Wright. Its “Roof Top Ramble” is as close to a farm in the city as a kid can get with a pond, greenhouse and chicken coop on the roof.
Wisconsin Veterans Museum – an award-winning attraction showcasing Wisconsin’s roles in military conflicts from the Civil War through the Gulf Wars. Vintage vehicles and aircraft, including a WWI-vintage Sopwith Camel biplane and a P-51 Mustang fighter from WWII grab plenty of attention.
Fresh Air And Exercise Too
When southern Wisconsin’s weather is at its best there’s plenty to enjoy outdoors, too. Consider these great gathering spots within easy reach of a campus area apartment:
Henry Vilas Zoo – one of the few remaining quality zoological parks in the country that doesn’t charge admission. The 28-acre zoo regularly attracts about 1 million visitors a year. In addition, surrounding city parts play host to organized softball leagues, picnickers and impromptu Frisbee competitions. It’s a family-friendly atmosphere. Adjacent Lake Wingra provides additional sport fishing and boating opportunities.
University of Wisconsin Arboretum – with limited motor vehicle access the 1,260 acre space is a great place for hiking, biking or just relaxing. Concerts on The Square – The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra’s home is the Overture Center on State Street, but every summer it provides free concerts on Wednesday evenings on the lawn of the State Capitol.
Annual Art Fairs – There’s the Art Fair On the Square bringing artists and visitors from all over North America to Madison. In addition, there is an Art Fair Off the Square – running down adjacent streets. Together, nearly 500 artists and more than 200,000 visitors gather annually.

Madison Lakes Define Wisconsin’s Capitol City
Wherever you live in Dane County, you are within a few minutes’ drive or pedal of more than 15,000 acres of beautiful, unique lakes. Madison lakes and related activities have defined the area for centuries. Known as the city of four lakes there are actually five bodies of water enhancing nearby apartment living.
Madison’s central city is built on an isthmus – a narrow point of land between two bodies of water. From its founding, the city has been anchored by its two largest lakes. Lake Mendota is the largest. Lake Monona is a close second. Nearby to the south and connected by the Yahara River are Lakes Waubesa a Kegonsa. Lake Wingra connects via a small creek and forms the border and major attraction of the city’s Henry Vilas Zoo and Park – one of the few remaining free zoos in the country.

If you are up to it, you can paddle from the north end of Lake Mendota through the four largest Madison area lakes and on toward Illinois! Note the many green recreational areas on this map adjoining the lakes, too.
Almost any day of the week, all year around, you can find something going on around or in one of these special waterways. Canoeing, kayaking, sailing, water skiing and swimming are obvious. Ice boating is a lesser-known “hot” sport when the lakes freeze over. Sport fishing is also a year around pursuit.
Apartment Living Surrounded By History
The waterways in the area defined the progress of Dane County. They were the highways for commerce and trade. Native American residents and settlers tapped the resource for food and drinking water, too. Today the Madison lakes remain vital links between communities. They provide a rich cultural, historic and recreational legacy. From American Indian effigy mounds to uniquely-designed Frank Lloyd Wright structures there’s plenty to see near the lakes shores.
A 1936 history of the area noted about 1,000 Indian effigy mounds discovered near Lake Mendota. These earthen mounds are linear ridges, conical domes and mounds shaped like animals – bears, birds, deer, panthers and water spirits. On Observatory Hill, within the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, there is a turtle and a bird effigy. In the UW Arboretum, near Lake Wingra, there are several. Each location emphasizes the importance of the unique lakes to modern and ancient residents.

Madison Lakes Cater To Relaxing, Too
Lake Mendota defines the northern border of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s campus. On any given day in the summer you can find hundreds of people taking in the sights. Sitting at the UW Union Terrace, sipping a beverage or enjoying a meal from a nearby eatery. Or, they may just sit and soak up the sunshine – watching a regatta on the white-capped lake. Apartment living near the campus puts these and many more activities just minutes from your front door.
At the city celebrates the 4th of July thousands of people flock to the shorelines of both major lakes to watch fireworks sponsored by several suburbs and organizations.
To the south, Lake Kegonsa State Park snuggles up to the northeastern shore of its namesake lake. It’s laced with hiking trails and features comfortable camping and picnic areas.

‘The Square’ Is No. 1 Among Madison Attractions
The Capitol Square is not only the center of Madison WI activities and State government. When it comes to Madison attractions it’s the city’s front lawn. Families, friends and visitors regularly gather for a good time. Lucky for residents of Madison apartments, it’s accessible from all points on the compass.
If you’re new to Madison or an “old-timer” there are several annual events that are on the “must see” list every year. The Capitol Square is the site of Wisconsin’s State Capitol.  It doesn’t take Madison residents long to know it simply as “The Square.”
For most residents of Madison apartments the workings of the State Government is the least attractive activity.
Schedule These Madison Attractions
The season of activities begins early. Consider these crowd-pleasing attractions:
The Dane County Farmers’ Market – beginning each April and running through late fall the Farmers’ Market attracts thousands of people to The Square on Saturday mornings. Since 1972 local vendors have brought locally-produced vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, flowers, honey, cheese, meat, bake goods and more for sale. Enlivening the atmosphere you’ll also find food carts of ready-made treats and musicians. Plan to get there early – the event opens at 6 a.m. As Saturday’s market gained popularity and demand grew, a smaller version popped up on Wednesday mornings along Martin Luther King Blvd – between the Capitol and the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center.
Cows on the Concourse – an added attraction to the Farmers’ Market every year, celebrating June as Dairy Month, local farmers bring cows and calves to The Square. This year’s 40th annual event is June 1 beginning at 8 a.m.  There will be two petting areas for city kids (or rural kids looking for a taste of home) to get up close and personal with the animals. It goes without saying there will be opportunities to sample cheese and other dairy products.
From Rural To City Attractions
Once you’ve filled you pantry with fresh, locally-grown foods take time to enjoy the surroundings. These attractions treat the senses, too:
Concerts on The Square – welcome the largest “chamber orchestra” to a unique chamber – the Capitol lawn. The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra’s home is the beautiful Overture Center, just a few blocks down State Street from The Square, but every summer it provides 6 free concerts on Wednesday evenings. The musical selections are varied and lively. Surprise guest performers add to the fun. Be advised, competition for the coolest picnic setup is energetic. Blankets are encouraged and chairs are not. For a fee you can get a VIP table – but what’s the fun in that!
The Art Fairs – officially the Art Fair On the Square, this annual event is so popular it brings artists and visitors from all over North America to Madison. Its popularity grew so fast there’s also an Art Fair Off the Square – running down adjacent streets. Nearly 500 artists and more than 200,000 visitors have it on their annual calendars. No matter where your taste in art lies, there’s something for you on The Square during these Madison attractions.
