Do you know what annoys me most about the rain code playthroughs on youtube?

The fact that half of let's players don't read gumshoe gabs

On the one hand, it's a bit the game's fault that it's easy to skip and not read. But on the other hand, gumshoe gabs really tell and show a lot about the characters

This makes me really upset that some people just don't want to take an interest in this and simply skip over some of the character development and history purely due to unwillingness to explore

I think Vivia, as a person who is used to running away from the truth and prefers the world of books, would like to leave everything as it is

I'm sure that deep in his heart Vivia wanted Yakou to stay alive, but will a man who has never clung to anyone and has found someone dear to him for the first time in his life be able to fight for him to the end?

He's used to hoping that everything will stay as it is. After all, that's the only thing he knows to do in a situation like that

my first thought was “so true i love it when he doesn’t go for what would make him truly happy or fulfilled” but then my head screws on and i realize

no, actually, this philosophy is actually what has been keeping vivia SANE this whole time.

he’s literally been haunted his whole life, by voices coming from outside his own head, desperately pleading for him to help them from beyond the grave… this has obviously had a huge toll on his mental health and now he’s suicidally depressed. yay. it’s unclear exactly how he’s been able to tune out those voices, but it’s a large possibility that training his forte at the wdo had a lot to do with it.

in fact, i wonder if before his forte was refined, he would, like halara, confuse his ‘second sight’ with reality, while awake. maybe his forte training involved strengthening his abilities while sleeping to dull them while awake. maybe this allowed him to focus on the things he enjoys more.

despite vivia’s constant yearning for death, he’s usually first and foremost described as a “self-indulgent personality.” he’s stubborn and won’t go out of his way to do anything that he doesn’t want to do. usually he’s reading whatever he can get his hands on. he has a preference for books that explore worlds farther than reality - which fits for his penchant for escapism. he’s incredibly observant of the real world around him, but rarely ever interacts with it. in fact, before yakou manages to melt the proverbial ice, all vivia does is ask to be left alone so he can read - and that clearly has nothing to do with any secret ulterior motives or detective schemes - he’s slacking on the job because he dun wanna do it. (relatable symptom of neurodivergent depression.)

but imagining a vivia that doesn’t actively disobey orders in order to lounge around in weird places with his nose in a book? what if he went places and helped with menial tasks? what if he answered awkward questions without sifting through the mental thesaurus in order to obfuscate his true feelings? what if he was more normal?

obviously it wouldn’t be the vivia we know and love, it’d be a hollow facsimile, and a painful existence. imagine trying your best to live life according to societal norms every day, despite being malnourished and not well rested, going out of your way to do things for other people, carving away bits of yourself for people you don’t know, and then crawling into bed at the end of the day, and instead of sleeping, you leave your body behind and become part of the spirit world, toiling the same way but for people who have been long dead. rinse and repeat. that sounds miserable.

so like we been knew vivia’s avid literature hobby is fervent escapism, but at the same time it’s still an anchor for him. giving him a way to experience the world without experiencing the world - a world that can be traveled through at any pace or rhythm, or can be paused at any moment. a world that some other wonderful human mind created to share with others - something that brings beauty to those who dare to look between the pages. books can be information, explanation, analysis, morality, complexity, fact, fiction, comedy, tragedy, poetry, art, life, love, and anything else in words. instead of engrossing himself in the misery of the world, he looks at the stories that have been penned by its people, with due reverence. he does genuinely love people and this is his favorite way of experiencing that love.

but at the same time, my original thought still rings true… he leans a little too hard into his solitary escapism, his peace and quiet, that he loses his chance to reach out to someone he truly cared about - could he have saved yakou? and if he’d learned yakou’s reason… would he have even wanted to?

why spend time thinking about it? if you keep rereading the same passage over and over… the book will never end…

that too, is escapism… that, too, is love…

but if you keep everything to yourself, who will ever know?

If you're wondering, yes, I played the hundred line demo and I liked it even more than I expected!

My attitude towards the game is still reserved, and there were a couple of things that I wasn't impressed with or didn't like, but overall, I really liked it. It was a really good demo!
