I think as a fandom we should accept that the jokes about us being obsessed with background characters who have the wierdest names are 100% true and correct

I'm glad that you guys seem to like my appreciation post for canon era newsies! I cut out a little info on immigration experiences specific to individual newsies but I saved it to a doc. Would anyone like to see me expand on it a little? I think I have about... a million? saved web pages about immigrants from that time period so I should be able to add links and stuff

Over the years, I've seen some posts about how fics set in canon era are boring. It doesn't happen a lot and obviously everyone is allowed to have their own preferences, but it's one of those things that really baffles me when I stumble across a post about it. Newsies is a period piece set in 1899 and I don't understand how fans of the movie could find the time period boring. Especially since there are so many unique and interesting things that can be done with canon era fics!
Vaudeville theater is an obvious one, since it really hit its peak in that era. While theaters are obviously still around, the vaudeville style is a lost art and the fact that Medda is a successful theater owner in an era where women were discouraged from doing things like that is both fascinating and aspirational.
There were so many things that were either invented in the late 19th century or became more available to the masses during that time period. In my experience, having characters try something that's new for them but something I have regular access to gives me a whole new appreciation for it.
There are also a lot of great takes on the immigrant perspective from that time period that can't be replicated in modern times. There's a good chance that a lot of the newsies came through Castle Garden (pre-1889), Ellis Island (1892-1897, 1900-1954), or the Barge Office (1890-1891, 1897-1900) and if they aren't immigrants themselves, their parents probably were. And there is so much you can do with it with just a little research, even just five minutes of reading. And if you don't have time for research, ask me! I'd be happy to do it for you!
Not to mention, there's so much stuff either mentioned or alluded to in the movie that you can play around with! Sarah and Esther being the breadwinners during the strike! The abundance of other strikes going on when the newsies were striking (Side note, @vnewyorku is doing this great Summer of Strikes thing and posting newspaper clippings from the era and transcribing them, so if you love history, check it out)! For angst, you could talk about Jack's history of food insecurity or the Refuge!
And of course, there's the fact that so much of what we love about the characters is shaped by the time period they live in. Not just the strike itself, but so much of who they are comes from the world around them. I mean, the fact that they're children who have to work for a living is something that's difficult to replicate in modern fics. Jack's desire to leave New York for Santa Fe was inspired by Western Expansion and cowboy dime novels. Racetrack, who's 19 at the oldest, spends all day gambling at Sheepshead, a track that no longer exists. Lodging houses for working children no longer exist, so realistically, the boys wouldn't have the same dynamic in modern times that they have in canon. The world they live in is so different than ours and it fascinates me.
Again, everyone can have their own preferences and I'm not trying to police how people engage with the fandom. I'm just using this as an opportunity to pretty much gush about my love of history and maybe give everyone a new appreciation for the movie and the time it's set in. If anyone has other time period-specific things they love, please feel free to add on to this post or send me an ask/DM because I would love to hear them!

Canon Era Spot who knows he isn't allowed to have anything for himself, who knows he has to live for the persona he built, the legend and mythos he built of the King of Brooklyn, because if he did everything would crumble apart, he wouldn't be this elusive figure anymore that protects his kids, the feared newsboy that no one dared to cross or question. Building this took everything out of him and maintaining it will continue to take even more.
And Racetrack who wanders and belongs everywhere and nowhere, who no one takes as serious, who is welcome in most places, who everyone knows is good with cards and bad with bets, who sees more than people believe and hears and understands more than anyone would give him credit for, who can see exactly the careful construction that keeps the groups of newsboys together and united, especially in Brooklyn, sees the pillars and planned out structures, knows where it could easily break even if it is hidden away by seemingly more important things.
But it doesn't keep him from wanting it, taking what he shouldn't have.
Nor does it keep Spot from wanting, for once, to do something solely for himself, either.

Newsies headcanons 🫶🏻
(Modern AU)
- Jack has a really cool tree house that everybody hangs out in. It's fully decorated, and people just go inside it even if Jack's not there.
- Davey and Race are on the debate team and are menaces to society. During unprotected time, Davey gives the ideas, and Race shouts them aggressively.
- Race loves literally anything sweet and has the biggest sweet tooth to ever live. For his birthday, people just buy him stacks of sweets and chocolate, or if he's mad, they just give him a moam and call it a day.
- Sarah and David shared a room and had bunkbeds. They had to be physically pried away from each other when their parents decided they needed their own space.
- skittery has tons of posters on his wall that constantly fall off in the middle of the night and scare him shitless, he refuses to take them down.
- Once, Race and spots parents had to be called into the school to bring spare clothes for them because of a mishap with the food tech ingredients (they had a full blown food war)
- Jack and Davey had a similar experience in art class with the paint
- Race and Skittery are ALWAYS in the cinema they have seen every movie ever and love consuming media
- English is Races mother's second language, she called him "bunny" for years, thinking she was calling him "baby." Races friends take the piss and call him bunny all the time, meaning he has an abnormal amount of bunny merch
-One day, Race was walking by a forest and saw that a fox was chasing after a baby bunny. Because of his mother, he felt connected to it, he literally fist fought the fox and kept the bunny. He called her bubbles
- Race loves adrenaline, so therefore loves roller coaster, spot acts all tough like he's not scares of them but is secretly terrified.
- Jack and Davey go to the library for study dates, but Jack just talks and pokes at Davey until they go get lunch after
- at the function, Blink, Race and Skittery are ALWAYS the drunkest
- davey and Mush volunteer at the foodbank every Christmas even though Davey doesn't celebrate it
- Spots dad has confiscated his slingshot over 50 times and has no clue where he gets them from.
- They have group sleepovers and play roblox all night often.
- Medda is their drama teacher and has a love-hate relationship with her job.
-crutchy makes little embroidery patches for his friends
- Mush has an army of plushies that he refuses to get rid of because "what if they have feelings"
- once, Race went as spot for halloween and laughed so hard he cried
- Mush is tiktok famous and posts shirtless thirst traps

jack and sarah being besties is necessary for me btw
sarah tried to teach jack how to sew, but he lowkey sucked at it (sry jack 😭). the sewing machine kept getting stuck, he kept sewing things inside out, and he just couldn’t understand most of what was being said to him. he did his best to stay patient though, and by the end, sarah had helped him make a messenger bag!! it was flawed, so whenever it got a new hole or the thread wore out, he and sarah would fix it together and add patches to it. jack also painted on it a little bit. he uses the bag everyday and carries it everywhere. also, they signed their names with fabric paint on the bottom of it.
^^^ similarly, jack helped teach sarah how to paint. she could draw well enough, but was having trouble with the paint behaving how she wanted it to. she actually succeeded at painting well enough, and since then, she and him will just hang out and work on painting together. they’ll give each other some feedback, but mostly they just get really into painting and won’t talk much.
when jack and davey started dating officially, sarah went to give jack the ‘you better treat my brother right or i’ll kick your ass’ talk, but she started laughing halfway through pushing jack into a wall.
they have pretended to date each other out of convenience. couples eat free? they’re dating now. they’ve also pretended to date to avoid the homophobia, and in this davey and kath also pretended to date. javid and kathra solidarity fr
sarah would bring jack to feminism marches and women’s rights events. he’d be a little out of place but he’d be SUPER enthusiastic and yelling and stuff.
