A Year in Cassettes
Old Year
2018 was horrible in most ways, but at least I really truly love all the music we released. Before we start releasing new things and forget about the old, I just wanted to put a spotlight on all the 2018 releases. There were six of them, they were all vastly differently, and all uniformly wonderful. I’m tempted to say it was our best year yet. In order, they were:
Sara Renberg- Night Sands- This is the album where Sara Renberg’s clever jangle-pop hit its stride. It’s one of our most reviewed albums of year, with folks comparing it to The Mountain Goats, Free Cake for Every Creature, Silver Jews, Courtney Barnett, Jay Som, and Frankie Cosmos.
Indira Valey- No Me Tengas No Miedo- Valey’s haunted song-scapes are at their best on this EP. People said a lot of kind words about this album, but I liked what Slow Breathing Circuit had to say best: “Indira Valey has a way of dreaming up vocal sounds and techniques most people seem to have never thought of, or wouldn’t dare try…she sounds like an ancient sorceress, gothic poet, and vampire prophet all in one, and she’s downright spellbinding, spinning cosmic cobwebs in my mind.” Also was #13 on Tome to the Weather Machine’s albums of the year.
Midwife- Prayer Hands EP- the slowcore shoegaze of Midwife was well-loved this year. It topped our distro bestsellers list, made it on to best-of lists from Tome to the Weather Machine, Atlas Minor, Westword, Colorado Public Radio, and Antigravity Bunny’s Top 15 Drone Albums of 2018.
The Washboard Abs- Lowlight Visions- the finely-tuned art-pop heartbreak of Lowlight Visions is so grand that it really deserved a bigger, better label. I kind of can’t believe this band is still unknown enough to still be releasing albums with us. While I don’t feel it got the attention it deserved, it did make Various Small Flame’s best albums list and its lead single, “Never Finds You,” made Birp!’s best of list.
Reighnbeau- Slight EP- we’ve been fans of Reighnbeau for ages, and it felt so right to team up for this EP of collaborations with Colleen Johnson of AF’s own Flying Circles and Madeline Johnston of Midwife and Sister Grotto. Tucker Theodore- LSG- a slight departure from his usual fair, LSG is an album of wild, ambient-noise/post-rock instrumentals. The perfect note to end the year on.
Midwife’s “Like Author, Like Daughter” reissue Due to popular demand, our friends at Whited Sepulchre Records have just reissued Midwife’s debut LP! Shoegaze-coated ambient-pop slowcore anthems for the masses. Such a perfect album.
Reighnbeau shirts Gorgeous Reighnbeau shirts, anyone? Two designs, both awesome.
New Kate Ferencz We get ridiculously excited every time Philly freak electro-pop artist Kate Ferencz blesses the world with a new album. Cold Rhymes Records just released What Was the World, and we’re distroing it to help spread the good word.
Vintage Tape Packs As always, we’re putting together grab bags of tapes, both new and old. A new one: “Giant Pile of Vintage Cassettes,” which is 20+ tapes in working order for $20. We also have our popular Vintage Cassette Grab Bag, which has 6 for $10 (but they’re hand-selected and better/weirder than the giant pile).

REIGHNBEAU “Hide”
Reighnbeau is the moniker under which the Albuquerque-based artist Bryce Hample creates dreamy, hypnotic tracks that incorporate heavenly, shoegazy vocals, and reverberating electronic hits. “Hide” is the sweepingly atmospheric title-track off the forthcoming new Ep which features vocals from singer and longtime collaborator Madeline Johnston. Listen above.
