Every remake of a game should come with a copy of the game it is remaking that is compatible with modern hardware but otherwise untouched and I'm not even exaggerating this should be mandated by law. If you're going to attempt to recreate a piece of art you have to give people access to its original context otherwise it becomes the only context and makes the previous version simply a superceded product

Proposing an alternative idea to "Great Man" History called "Some Asshole" History: the idea that history is generally driven by trends and patterns but once in a while Some Asshole comes along, says "what does this button do?" and blows everything up, and by the time things stabilise again the trends and patterns are different

To qualify as some asshole you have to

Actively disrupt the historical trends and patterns around you

Not be predictable based on the trends and patterns of the previous 100 years or so

So, for example, you could easily predict the French Revolution and that it would lead to a period of instability culminating in the rise of a military dictator. But you probably could not predict that said dictator would rewrite the book on European warfare, briefly raise France to hegemony over the continent, completely overhaul German politics, set the state for Italian unification, and pave the way for Britain taking control of Egypt and South Africa. So Napoleon Bonaparte counts as Some Asshole

By contrast, nobody involved in the transition from Roman Republic to Roman Empire qualifies because the biggest curveball in that whole mess was Julius Caesar getting assassinated and that wasn't exactly unpredictable

everytime i see someone being "so obviously fucking wrong" about something online and i want to correct them, i think about this comment and it helps me remember the futility of it all. thank you u/YARGLE_IS_MY_DAD you are like the patron saint of online patience to me
