Illo #7 - Splice
With my word being 'fold' I wanted to utilize one of the three options to reinforce the denotative meaning of the word. This is how I ended up using splice! The gap in the word 'fold' intentionally puts the top half on a slant upwards as if it's folding itself, with the spliced quote below following suit. The splice on the quote intentionally splits the word 'broken' to reinforce its message.

Illo #6 - Vernacular
This week's APP went through MANY different iterations before landing where it did. Here I utilized a contrast between serif and sans-serif type to bring emphasis on 'FOLD' in addition to it being the only right-justified word in the composition. I also aligned the stem of the 'D' in Denotative to the edge of image so it feels more visually balanced, same reason why the bowl of the 'D' in FOLD just barely overhangs beyond the right side of the image.

Illo #5 - Dilation
Quite literally revolving around dilation, this APP was made JUST with type on paths to emphasize the circle in the middle. This was very useful as a teaching tool for implied motion and hierarchy with shape dynamics as the readability and order of lines read depends not only on the type contrast but type placement and path as well. It was quite the challenge trying to find a way to give the 'MODERN TYPE' title an outer stroke to make it appear in front of the circle.

Illo #4 - Symbol
This is Epsilon. The Epsilon we know is the Greek Small Letter Epsilon. Epsilon is the fifth Greek letter. Epsilon is an arbitrary number. Yadda yadda yadda, so on, so on.
With this weekly application we were fairly reserved in terms of direction, so I wanted to play with scale here. Because Epsilon is a mathematical symbol I wrote this segment to reinforce that sort of linear approach, almost like an instruction manual. This is also why the word Epsilon itself is bolded and italicized!

Illo #3 - Passage
This is a passage from Bruno Munari's Seeking Comfort in an Uncomfortable Chair. In it, he talks about how design has gone off the rails and is too focused on how nice things look as opposed to making something that is simple and comfortable.
While working with this passage my main concern was nailing the delivery of the words. You can see this with the word "headache" with its excessive kerning and the phrase "every time we need to design an armchair" with its use of negative space to imply a sort of metronomical inflection.

Illo #2 - Storm
Here I utilized blur and transparency to overlap my wordforms as the story this is based from comes from within the thoughts and memories of a man who falls in love with a woman he slept with only for her to move away.
Much like faded memories of the man, the type is blurred and overlapped in areas to push that fogginess. The only type that's not blurred is "it's as close as i would ever get," as it's something he constantly thinks about, even now.

Illo #1 - Finials
This weeks illo was made from the typeface ATC Agate. I created the basic shape of a face utilizing the finials of multiple letters from the typeface, keeping track of each one to ensure none were repeated too much.
Deconstructing the pieces that make up the whole of a given letter is a really interesting way of looking for shapes to build a completely new form! For example, using the massive bowls of the 'B' as tufts of hair contrasts really well with the smaller details of the face.
(I'll also mention that for the pupils I used the counter of a 'b' but filled in)
