CHAPTER TWO: PERIL AT THE PORT

The captain’s estimations were right: with the breaking of dawn wind filled the sails and the crew were on their way once again. After two days of sailing steadily across the Caribbean, the crew arrived at the port of Efuge. Many pirates call this town their home and it’s a place of deviousness and debauchery. It’s not an uncommon sight to see some drunkard topple off a second-floor balcony or puke into the nearest bucket. To you, it’s a second home off of the ship. Normally, you’d feel quite at ease here. 

But on the night of the festivities, the captain received a message via one of her carrier gulls: Lockeheed is Waiting. Presumably, this message came from one of Anne’s contacts at the port who wished to offer a warning. Despite this, Anne declared they’d be making port. The journey forward would be impossible without extra provisions and many wish to end their time on The Red Tempest before they enter more treacherous waters. 

If Lockeheed and his crew are at Efuge waiting to ambush The Red Tempest the only course of action is to be prepared. Sigrid and Emery have been assigned to watch and guard the ship. Which would easily be the most dull and mundane job, if not for a pair of Lockeheed’s men intending to sneak aboard and alight the powder storage. The two crew members with arguably the least experience in pirating, have an opportunity to prove their salt by ensuring Lockeheed’s plan for sabotage goes awry. 

Meanwhile, Anne, Luis, and Tayn have left the ship and are overseeing the procurement of new supplies. All while keeping an eye out for Lockeheed or any of his crew. What they don’t know is that Lockeheed awaits them in The Wet Dog, a tavern where Anne is known for acquiring rum. His mind is set on eliminating the competition before the quest can even begin. If not for the warning Anne received it would be a quick fight. But she’s on high alert and has insisted the three of them stay out of sight as much as possible while on the island. But if they want their rum they’ll have to get past Lockeheed. 

Ollie, Obedience, and Lizzie have been tasked with recruiting any pirates willing to enter The Devil’s Teeth. The captain says to acquire fresh flood by whatever means they see fit: threatening, seducing, or even free samples of Obie’s best gumbo. The night will be what they make of it: either a giddy romp of making new friends or a painstaking series of attempted grovels just to get some new schmuck to agree to swab the decks. 

Finally, The Captain noticed some . . . tension between Jasper and Jonah and insisted for the sake of morale they go on a teambuilding exercise together. They were ordered to gain carpentry and repair supplies from the port master who is waiting. It’ll be a lot of carrying heavy supplies to the ship. They’ll have to work together to get it done or risk throwing their backs out in an attempt to establish dominance. If they make peace they may be able to make it back to the ship in time to help Emery and Sigrid before the ship explodes and the supplies they brought are for naught.

THE OBJECTIVE: Gather supplies at port and fend of Lockeheed's men. IN CHARACTER TIMEFRAME: One day.

CHAPTER ONE:  A STILL NIGHT 

It’s been two weeks since last port, and there’s one more port still to reach before The Devil’s Teeth. A simple restock will be in order, and the last chance for any hesitant crew members to depart before embarking on such a dangerous quest. The Captain says she’d rather leave cowards on the shore than have them on her crew, which is as much permission to leave as it is a challenge to stay. 

But tonight, approximately two days west of Port Efuge, the sea is glass. The wind is till and not a single ripple can be seen dancing across the ocean’s surface save the ones spawned by the steady sloshing of the ship. And the ones created by crew members tossing meaningless bits and bobs over the edge just to watch the concentric circles stretch and dissipate. Many would see this scene as bad luck, an omen of doom. It is a rare occurrence for the water and skies to be so calm and it could mean being stranded for days waiting for the winds to chance as rations dwindle. But the Captain assures that with morning’s light the sails will fill and the ship will be on it’s way. 

The crew is finding ways to keep themselves busy. Most are taking the opportunity to sleep, but some are using this break to rejoice. A few members of the crew are putting on an improvised love play and others are practicing their dueling. The Captain watches over it all; having recommended that anyone who has questions about their upcoming expedition field them now. It’s turned into a small party on the main deck, as people drink, sing, and laugh.

But a trepidation fills the air, since this may be their last chance to embrace frivolity together before entering the sea of monsters. The ocean is a dangerous place to call home, but everyone knows that where they’re heading next is the proverbial lion’s den. Someone is going to die, maybe all of them. They all just wonder when, how, and whether it will be worth it?

THE STOWAWAY

ABOUT

the stowaway is not an official member of the crew and they don't have an assigned role on the ship. however, since their discovery last week the captain has assigned them to work alongside the swabbie doing all the undesirable grunt work on the ship.

PERSONALITY

+ sincere, bold, intellectual, optimistic - entitled, foolish, unprepared, inexperienced

CONNECTION

the surgeon. you see a lot of similarities between the two of you. maybe it's all projection but you think you probably have a lot in common if you could only get a better chance to talk to them. you also have some medical background so you could be a big help to them if they let you. you have interest in taking their position on the ship, but perhaps you could be an assistant. the ship seems in dire need of a larger medical staff. the captain. when you discovered and brought to face them they stare you down for what seemed like years. their eyes bore into you as they sized you up. then they just shrugged and told you to start mopping. you think they may have plans for you yet, but you feel lucky they didn't kill you on the spot. for someone with such a fearsome reputation you're surprised they haven't made you walk the plank. but so far they've been oddly kind. the powder monkey. they were the first one to find you stowed away amongst the barrels. they locked eyes with you, nodded, and then walked away. you were terrified of what would happen next but nothing did. it seemed like they were content with just ignoring you and that was an act of kindness you weren't expecting. that show of solidarity makes you inclined to trust them but the more you get to know them, the more you wonder if befriending them is a good idea.

THE POWDER MONKEY

ABOUT

the powder monkey does what the name implies: they run gunpowder between the stores and the cannons for the gunner to use. they also fire the cannons when the situation calls for it. but their main priority is making the gunpowder storage stays dry and safe.

PERSONALITY

+ daring, resourceful, determined, helpful - deranged, impulsive, reckless, unintelligent

CONNECTION

carpenter. sometimes you love them and sometimes you hate them. it really depends on whether they are agreeing with you or not. they've been on the ship for a long time so that makes them think they know better than you, and that might be true, but you'll be damned if they don't hear your opinion. you'll shout it if you have to. at the end of the day you can always forgive each other over a pint and a game of liar's dice. cook. you don't have a lot of feelings about the cook. the food they make is okay and you aren't one to complain. you've tried to convince them to let you cook with them and to get a bit more experimental with their recipes but they shot you down without hesitation. you think that they don't like you, but you have no idea why. you can't think of what it was you did to get on their bad side but you'd like to earn their friendship if you can. surgeon. you have absolutely no idea that they do not like you. as far as you can tell you are good friends and they appreciate how you accepted them into the crew without any muss or fuss. you visit them often in their quarters and they always seem concerned for your well-being. it's nice to have someone that cares about you. you'd protect them if you ever got the chance, but it seems like the gunner always gets there before you can.

THE SWABBIE

ABOUT

the swabbie mops the deck and repairs the sails. they do all of the grunt work that the rest of the crew avoids. they are the lowest rank on the ship.

PERSONALITY

CONNECTION

the carpenter. you have no idea why they are allowed to stay on this ship. you assume that it's because they've been here so long that they are basically carved into the masthead at this point. but letting them keep their role and title as carpenter feels negligent since they never do their job. you'd be happy to trade roles with them, but you know they'd never accept that. you want to see the red tempest thrive and it's hard to do that with multiple leaks in the lower decks. the quartermaster. they are so effortlessly cool. the ideal pirate. you want to be like them but you don't have the same sort of gravitas and presence. they ignore you more often than not. it's like you are invisible to them. but that's okay, you know they have more important things to do with their time than idle chit-chat with you. also, you think that if they did ever ask you a question you'd probably stumble all over your words anyway. the sailing master. they're the closest thing you have to a best friend on the ship. you know that it's difficult for the higher officers to want to be associated with a swabbie, but the sailing master has taken a shine to you and it makes your heart sing. you seem to be the only person on the ship that they are sweet and attentive to and the special treatment is more than you could have asked for. they help you out with your chores when no one is looking and they've made you feel welcome when no one else has.

THE OFFICER

ABOUT

the officer is the jack-of-all-trades on the ship. they fill in whatever role is needed in the moment. most often that means piloting the ship when the sailing master is asleep.

CONNECTION

the captain. you don't just want their approval, you need it. everyday. you don't have any ambition to be the captain of your own ship, but you would love to be the quartermaster at the captain's side. you think they are a genius who plays the role of an idiot. you're convinced that they could teach you to be the second-most feared pirate on the seven seas. they don't seem very interested in that prospect at the moment but you're sure you can convince them. the gunner. they are so mean to you. they are mean to everyone, but when they insult you and call you worthless it feels personal in a way it doesn't with the others. you're scared of them but you don't want to show it. you know they could kick your ass so thoroughly that you'd never be able to show your face again, but you aren't sure how to get into their good graces, or if that's even possible. you're trying to survey the other crew members to see what the best way to win over the gunner is. the sailing master. it's been a long time since you despised someone in the way you despise the sailing master. they are constantly talking down to you and nitpicking your work and ideas. they make you feel so small and helpless, which is ridiculous because they are hardly a formidable force. to make matters worse, they like to cut you down in front of the captain and the captain never defends you. it fills you with a rage uncharacteristic of your usual temper. you think it might even drive you to murder.

THE GUNNER

ABOUT

the gunner is the person who defends the ship whether it be via the cannons or their personal firearm. they eliminate any threat to the crew upon the captain's orders.

PERSONALITY

CONNECTION

the surgeon. the surgeon is the only person on the crew you've felt comfortable opening up to a little. they aren't like the other crew members. they're so abundantly normal that it reminds you of the days before your life on the sea. as much as you love being a pirate, you do miss a sense of stability and the surgeon gives you that. they put you at ease and cure what ails you. you'd do anything for them. you know it's folly to give your loyalty away so easily but it seems like they need your protection and you can't resist a 'damsel' in distress. the officer. you think they are a fool who knows nothing of the reality of piracy. they talk a big game and then bring nothing of value to the ship. you think they are just another mouth to feed and another demanding voice taking up time when the true leaders are trying to deliberate. you're not going to do anything proactive to get rid of them, but you definitely aren't going to make them feel welcome. the quartermaster. you may not trust each other but you've worked together long enough to understand each other. when it comes to diplomacy and planning you could not be more at odds, but when the bullets start flying and the cannons roar the two of you become one mind. you can fight alongside each other with ruthless precision and accuracy. you move in tandem without even trying. it's thrilling to fight alongside them and you can see the sparkle in their eyes as well.

THE SURGEON

ABOUT

the surgeon keeps the crew in good health. being a pirate is dangerous work so the surgeon stitches up cuts, tends to the ill, and advises the captain on crew safety.

PERSONALITY

+ selfless, just, mature, merciful - tired, stubborn, whiny, morbid

CONNECTION

the gunner. they have saved your life more than once during your short tenure on the ship. they always swing in at the right moment and dash off before you can utter a proper thank you. but you make it up to them when you take care of their injuries, of which there have been many. they are so quiet and serene no matter the situation and it makes you feel calmer just to be around them. but there is a sadness behind their eyes that intrigues you. you've always been vulnerable to heroes with tragic backstories. the powder monkey. they make you want to pull your hair out. they're reckless and stupid and definitely going to get everyone on the ship killed. even though you've seen them pull through in the most dire of situations, their carelessness day to day puts your teeth on edge. you've expressed your distaste to the captain many times but no one else seems to care about the risk they pose. you're sure they wouldn't appreciate you going behind their back but you wouldn't dare say anything to their face.

THE SAILING MASTER

ABOUT

the sailing master is in charge of navigating and piloting the ship. they have to deal with inaccurate maps, unforeseen weather, and crew who claim the know better.

CONNECTION

the captain. you know that it's their intention to drive you up the wall and some days it works. but they listen to you when it matters and challenge you when you need challenging. they remind you of your mother and that comes with a lot of complicated feelings. but you love them even though you don't respect them. you hope one day they'll see the promise in you and recognize you're a good fit for leadership. maybe they'll even gift you the red tempest one day. but for now, you just have to endure their teasing. the officer. they are your primary source of competition on the ship. the quartermaster is already the second-in-command but the crew rankings from there onward get vague and you want to know that you are in charge should anything happen to the captain and the quartermaster. the officer seems to think they have the right to boss you around and that won't stand. you're going to do anything you can to make sure they know you're their boss and not the other way around. the swabbie. you adore them through and through. they make you smile even when you don't mean to. something about them makes you think that perhaps you need to lighten up and enjoy yourself. they make it seem like rank isn't important to life on the seas and this ship is a place of freedom unlike anywhere else in the world. you almost believe it when they are around, but then your greater ambitious nature takes over and you forget that glimpse of freedom they made you feel.

THE COOK

the cook keeps the crew fed. they prepare all of the meals on the ship and keeps track of food and water stores.

the carpenter. they're your other half. it started with them appreciating your food and giving you ample praise. that was enough to win your heart. you two often find an excuse to spend time together when you should be performing your duties. they make life on the seas feel simple and blissful. but sometimes it hurts you to know that their life would still be so rich and full without you, while you feel like you'd be empty inside without them. the powder monkey. you are jealous of them, purely due to your possessive nature. you don't like anyone butting in on your friendship with the carpenter so when you see the two of them laughing and singing together you feel the white-hot spark of envy. then when they start to bicker and the carpenter comes to you to complain, you relish the opportunity to talk about the powder monkey with venom on your tongue. you know it's petty and childish but you can't help yourself. the gunner. this absolute piece of work has never once attempted to get on your good side so you make sure they know the feeling of distaste is requited. you've spit in their food more than once. you don't appreciate them biting the hand that feeds them and it doesn't matter to you that they are like this with everyone. they're rude to you and that's all that matters.

THE CARPENTER

ABOUT

the carpenter is tasked with maintaining the ship. they make repairs when the ship is damaged and ensure that there are no leaks. if the ship sinks, it's on the carpenter's conscience.

PERSONALITY

+ affable, charming, easy-going, at ease - lazy, unaware, distractible, gullible

CONNECTION

the swabbie. you can tell they don't like you, but they're just a swabbie, so does their opinion really matter? they like to tell you how important your job is and remind you when you missed a spot. they're never intentionally condescending about it but still, you find it patronizing. you don't need this young upstart telling you how to do the job you've been doing for years. usually, their critiques are valid but that still doesn't mean you're going to listen to them. the powder monkey. your relationship with the powder monkey depends on the day. sometimes you two are chugging rum and playing cards together and some days you're yelling at each other over a hole in the hull. it's fire and ice with you two, since you get along well as friends but don't work well together as crewmates. the cook. you two are best friends. they're the same level of unhinged as you are and that makes your personalities mesh perfectly. you know the pair of you are a nuisance to everyone else on the ship and that's what makes it so fun. they are your literal partner in crime and it seems like after all these years you don't even need to say w word out loud to perfectly understand what the other is thinking.

THE QUARTERMASTER

ABOUT

the quartermaster is the second in command of the ship. they keep the crew in line and manage the ship while the captain is asleep. should anything happen to the captain, the quartermaster would take over.

PERSONALITY

+ loyal, determined, ruthless, mysterious - stern, secretive, vengeful, violent

CONNECTION

the captain. you were surprised the day they welcomed you onto their ship and even more surprised when they asked you to be their second in command. they've never asked you about your past, and you don't know if that's them respecting your privacy or just being incredibly naive. either way, you're glad for it. they've been a good friend to you over the years and although you don't show it, they're the ones most likely to make you crack a smile. the swabbie. you see this bright-eyed and fresh-faced newcomer to the crew and it makes you sigh. you were never like them, of course, optimism and vim were never your style. but still it breaks your heart to think of how the sea will change them; break them down until they become a jaded, leathery bag of bones like the rest of the crew. you want an excuse to send them away, but they'd probably just find a crueler crew to join. the gunner. you just can't bring yourself to trust them even after all this time. the captain insists that you two are birds of a feather and therefore should flock together, but when you look at the gunner you see your old self and there was a reason you made a change. you don't want them on your crew or in your life, but no matter what you do you can't seem to get rid of them.

THE CAPTAIN

ABOUT

the captain is the leader of the crew. they tell everyone where to go and what to do. if they are disobeyed they have the authority to punish their crew as they see fit.

+ witty, verbose, daring, accepting - unfocused, unintelligent, cocky, impatient

CONNECTION

the quartermaster. your best friend on the entire ocean, other than the rats and birds of course. you trust them to the end of the earth . you love to tease them and jest about them, but it all comes from a place of love. you're trying to get them to open up and let loose more, but they seem to struggle with having fun. no matter, you don't mind them being a stick in the mud during revelries, in fact you think it's funny. the officer. they make you laugh even though they don't mean to. they try so hard all of the time and treat piracy like some stuffy accounting job. you have no idea why they are in this line of work; other than their desire for renown. you think one day they'll probably try and lead a mutiny against you, and you're looking forward to seeing how it plays out. the sailing master. the sailing master loves telling you what to do and you love rolling your eyes and bitching and moaning. it's fun to drive them crazy, to make them annoyed, but at the end of the day, you always listen to their sage wisdom and do what they tell you is best. you know they're smarter than you and they know it too. that's why it's so fun to make them doubt why they answer to you.
