One of the nicest things in the world (to me) is when you can take old technology and upgrade it into something pretty excellent. In the above case, I’m going to turn my spare iPod Mini 2nd-gen [capacity: 4gb] into an outstanding 64gb player on the cheap: I’ve ordered a 64gb MicroSD card for $5 and a SecureDigital-to-CompactFlash adaptor for $9. Yeah, also need a replacement clickwheel ($10) due to Apple’s fragile ribbon cable design. Protip: If you’re installing a new clickwheel, first put a piece of clear packing tape on both sides of the ribbon for reinforcement to increase durability! :) Considering I got this iPod free from a friend who found it at a thrift for just a few bucks, this is a ridiculously cost-effective solution.
The storage in a Mini 2nd-gen is a CF-formfactor Microdrive so it’s very easy to swap out with an actual CF card or, courtesy of an adaptor, SD card. I’ve already done this using a 16gb CF card on my main Mini, so now want to push the limits… and MicroSD storage is tons cheaper than CF (current market value: $40-$90 for 64gb). I’ve seen the tweaker sites talk about using SD and MicroSD as well as 32gb CF cards, but never bumping to 64gb. After installing the drive and getting things back together, plugging it and running iTunes will result in a dialog asking to format and install the latest software, so there’s no hoop-jumping to make the nonstandard storage work.
The current state of this iPod is… in a Ziplock bag without a thumbwheel.

Napster promo card and media transfer software disk that came with a Creative ZEN Vision:M digital audio player (just not the one pictured above).
Napster was free from 1999 to 2003 and became a pay service by the time this bundle came out in 2005.
