The best take I heard on Bernie sander came from the economist of all places: that in his whole career he’s passed something like 3 laws, and 2 of them had to do specifically with Vermont. They very fairly said that this was the record of a blowhard and it was soul crushing to see such a valid take coming from the British millionaire’s rag
"epic aoc/bernie/whoever statement dunking the new drumpf administration" oh my god nobody gives a fuuuuuck. nobody. anywhere in the world. worthless do-nothings who won't lift a finger to actually oppose the inhumane actions of the us empire but are more than happy to say the right keywords to proc gullible idiots into giving them their mom's credit card number and the three special digits on the back. shut up

The hobbits invent a fun game called ‘how close can we get to our friends before they notice us’
easy mode: Gimli (makes a lot of noise himself, very easy to sneak up on)
medium mode: Boromir (challenging enough to be great fun)
hard more: Aragorn (VERY attentive to his surroundings)
expert mode: Legolas

Consider the relationship graph of a complete binary polycule (complete = every person is in a relationship with every other person, binary = contains people of only two genders). call an edge in this graph gay if both the people in that edge are the same gender, and call it straight if the people in that edge are different genders.
We will say that a binary polycule tends straight if it has more straight edges than gay edges and that it tends gay if it has more gay edges than straight edges.
Show that if a complete binary polycule contains an equal number of people of both genders, then it will tend straight.
In terms of the size of the complete binary polycule, what is the critical gender ratio for straight tendency? (when the ratio of genders is above the critical gender ratio for straight tendency, the polycule will tend straight)
Do there exist complete binary polycules that trend neither straight nor gay? What about binary polycules that aren't complete?
Research problem: are there other conditions on the relationship graph besides completeness that also result in the existence of a critical ratio?

Incorrect, it should be dressed up in a tuxedo and armed with a chainsaw
love that the scifi/fantasy trope of ridiculously adorable creature that’s actually a super dangerous predator is a real thing that exists in this world and it’s the desert sandcat

I was once at a dinner with one of the editors of the ecmascript standard and before I knew that I was making fun of how nonsensical this sort of type coercion is. He very self importantly informed me of his position and insisted that type coercion made perfect sense so I gave him a patently ridiculous example I had been looking at earlier in the day. He claims the example doesn’t work the way I say it does so I smirk and calmly inform him that I looked at it earlier that day. A bit later he double checked himself on his phone and was then grumpy and taciturn for the rest of the night.
Whatever displeasure I made this man feel is my gift to programmers everywhere; it is a memory I cherish and look back on fondly whenever I have to deal with some stupid language “feature”
Additional fun fact: his dad was the one who fought to make C++ macros Turing complete; something else I made fun of in front of him before I knew his connection to it, but that was a whole other dinner
WTF is this language

My state of mind synthesizes these two emotions and overcomes them: I’m a pessimist because of intellect, but an optimist because of will. In all circumstances I think first of the worst possibility in order to set in motion all the reserves of my will and be in a position to knock down the obstacle. I have never entertained any illusions and I have never suffered disappointments. I have always taken care to arm myself with an unlimited patience, not passive, inert, but animated by perseverance.
Antonio Gramsci, 1929 Letter to his Brother
There is a word that has been hovering around me like a familiar since the morning after the U.S. presidential election. It comes from the title of the Palestinian novelist and politician Emile Habiby’s bizarre and wonderful 1974 book, The Secret Life of Saeed the Pessoptimist. Through the oxymoronic condition of pessoptimism, the novel—which Edward Said styled the national epic of Palestine—describes life for a fairly ordinary Arab on and across the borders of Israel, roughly from the Nakba in 1948 through the June War of 1967. ... In one of the letters to an anonymous correspondent in which he chronicles his adventures, Saeed the Pessoptimist explains how he inhabits his name under such conditions: “I don’t differentiate between optimism and pessimism and am quite at a loss as to which of the two characterizes me. When I awake each morning I thank the Lord he did not take my soul during the night. If harm befalls me during the day, I thank Him that it was no worse.” ... The kind of staying I am talking about stems from a position of defeat, a wish for no one to triumph until or unless we all can, which almost certainly means not at all. What this looks like, for Saeed, and maybe for us, is an unfettered commitment to the necessarily limited joys of being noncompliant—but also the joys of railing against the state in incessant speech acts, even failed ones, letters written and sent, phone calls recorded and counted, private acts of solidarity and public acts of care. It is not an overcoming of pessimism and optimism—positions that are neither banal nor vulgar—but rather a deep devotion to both, foolishly, endlessly, willingly.

I hate to be such a predictable stp nerd, but apparently I need to read this now
The Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard is like if Moana was a 60(?)-year-old man living in The West Wing, if The West Wing was set 25-or-1000* years after the apocalyptic collapse of a corrupt interdimensional fantasy empire, and he was subject to the worst case of “Clark Kent can’t be Superman because everyone knows Superman lives in the Fortress of Solitude; that’s just my dude Clark Cousin Kip from down the block” that anyone’s ever known. Also, forcing your friends to take vacation time is a love language.
*time is weird and it’s never explained, nor is most of the magic system, interdimensional structure, Red Company, nor any other worldbuilding not relevant to Kip’s emotional journey
