MOVE FINISHED! Messages there please because I won't be checking here that often
made the new blog!
pretty much copied the layout / design and info with only a few additional bits
to RP partners: we can just continue our stuff there (or move there gradually)
I'm probably not going to change the url of this blog to add -archive because that tends to break post links

fuck it. I wanna move him to be a main
Should I move Radahn to a new account? I barely use my main and he's a sideblog rn
mostly asking RP partners
I'd turn this into an archive so our stuff wouldn't get lost

the usage of different types of english in elden ring
most human/tarnished NPCs we meet, like rogier, ansbach, and nepheli, use late modern english:
"a sorcerer, as you might have guessed. i'm looking for a little something, here in the castle. when i'm not hotfooting it from the troops, that is." - rogier, first meeting "general radahn. a pleasure to see you, after all this time. but those remains do not belong to you." - ansbach, upon summon for PCR
but older demigods like messmer, ranni, and morgott use early modern english:
"thou'rt tarnished, it seemeth. mother, wouldst thou truly lordship sanction, in one so bereft of light? yet… my purpose standeth unchanged." - messmer, pre-battle cutscene "thou needst not indulge them unduly, but they too wish to appraise thy worth. it hath been a passing long time since a newcomer entered my service, after all." - ranni, after agreeing to serve her
then there are the younger demigods, like miquella, malenia, and potentially melina, who use a later variant of modern english, similar to the tarnished NPCs we speak to:
"if we honour our part of the vow, promise me you'll be my consort. i'll make the world a gentler place." - miquella, post-PCR cutscene "the scarlet bloom flowers once more. you will witness true horror. now, rot!" - malenia, phase 2 transition cutscene
finally, the hornsent NPCs like the hornsent, hornsent grandam, and the hornsent spirits such as the one outside the whipping hut, who use late middle english similar to the english found in shakespeare's sonnets:
"fie, another? ... then, as that woman would surely say, we are in our purposes well aligned. but understand. your kind are not forgiven. the erdtree is my people's enemy. by marika long betray'd, set aflame." - hornsent, first meeting "all your resentment lingers yet... the raw stuff from which i shall surely forge a curse. upon the dastard messmer's head. upon marika's children each and all." - scorched ruins hornsent spirit
i find it interesting how different the usage of english is in the game, and i feel that it can be a hint on how to properly date an individual's occupation in the lands between/land of shadow. the hornsent, being a people much older than many in the lands between, use the most archaic version of english, while the tarnished and younger demigods use a form of english more closely related to our own in the current period. older demigods (and marika herself, as heard from melina's recounts of marika's spoken echoes) use a form of english more closely related to the period of transition from middle english to early modern english.
additionally, another interesting thing to me: mohg is almost certainly nearly the same age as morgott (since they're referred to as twins), yet he speaks a little differently compared to morgott:
"tarnished, thou'rt but a fool." - morgott, post-battle dialogue "dearest miquella. you must abide alone a while." - mohg, pre-battle cutscene
this makes me wonder if it's possible that, assuming that miquella's verbiage is indicative of his younger age in comparison to the older demigods (aka the demigods born before the marika/radagon union), miquella's charm altered mohg's perception enough to also alter his manner of speaking and carrying himself in some way. if his pursuit of finery (dressing in embroidered robes and handling himself with poise, juxtaposing his bestial growls and strength) was mainly done in an effort to fit into miquella's ideal of a consort. of course, mohg could just be as vain as he seems to be all on his own accord, but i find that it's interesting to entertain the idea that even his current state of being was due to miquella's charm.
i'd love to hear what others think about this. i'm not very learned when it comes to english (it's not really my first language), but i find this all very cool to think about.
#my hc is that Radahn uses thou because he imitates Godfrey / he's old-fashioned#it's also funny that Malenia just... switched at some point while she was in a coma?

"The wildlife there was quite troublesome even before the rot" he says. "I can only imagine what they are like now."
Caelid used to be fairly arid, with the exception of the Dragonbarrow, and most of it untamed. He often wondered how the first settlers of Sellia managed.

One morning, Radahn helps Nouma make breakfast, but he's been restless for a while.
"I need to go home" he tells her. "I need to know how my men are doing... and if I can do something to help."
He hopes some of the Redmanes still remain. They might have already heard rumours about him being back... it's better not to leave them in uncertainty.

"I could help with that, yes. The ash can even be useful if I transport it to lands that are struggling." He knows ash makes for fertile soil after some time.
"Maliketh was the only thing even we demigods feared... not that he acted threatening, but we were all aware he could kill us if Marika commanded him."
He probably shouldn't be surprised at this point, but he's still a bit shocked.
"Thou took the Rune of Death? And thou survived a fight with him?"
Now he really starts to wonder how on earth he is still alive. She killed Death itself and wields its power...
"Placidusax? I have heard stories about him..." The legends said he once ruled the dragons, from Farum Azula... but he has never been there. He has seen it from afar, but Marika forbade them all from going there.
"Covered in ash? That probably isn't healthy for those living there..." He sighs. But his mind lingers elsewhere.
"If thou hast been to Farum Azula... hast thou encountered Maliketh? He does not like visitors..." Maliketh rarely came to Leyndell even before the conspiracy, and the demigods were always uncomfortable around him.

"I did fly quite a lot back in the day. It's just faster." He chuckles. "It would only take me a few hours to visit Mother or Rykard. You know how it is when you travel by land... everything wants to fight you."
Of course, not much can even be a threat to him, but it takes up so much time.
"Imagine being some highwayman and trying to mug me. It's happened a few times. I'm not sure what they expected."

"Do not worry." He can guess what she's thinking about. "I can land normally when I'm not fighting."
And he might have to stay there a while, if there is much to do. Back in the day, he has seen the initial fallout, but as the rot started to take him over, he fled to the desert to keep away from his men, worried that he might hurt someone.

"I imagine Leyndell is destroyed, too."
What else, he wonders? Is anything in this world still intact? Is there anything he can hold onto, any kind of anchor?
"Just tell me all. Who else have you killed?"

Radahn felt a bit lost whenever Miquella wasn't near. When his radiant presence filled everything, he didn't have to think much. He simply fought whatever needed killing. But after their latest battle, Miquella mentioned something about finding kindling, and that he needed to do this alone. Radahn was left to wander the snowy heights, got bored, flew down to the snowfields, and he's just been wandering. He knew Miquella would find him easily when he needs to.
"I feel healthy again, I suppose..." His new body, although smaller and somewhat unfamiliar, was strong. He only had vague memories of the time between getting infected with the rot and his final battle. Miquella probably obscured most of that so he wouldn't dwell on it.
"I think he is a god now. He didn't fully explain... but he will return to thee, I am sure."
He knew well Miquella always wanted to cure his sister. Perhaps now he will have the power to do that. Once he takes over and replaces Marika.
Malenia was, for one reason or another, just a little bit away from the Hailg-Tree on this day when she accidentally ended up running into Radahn around this same area, after not ‘seeing’ or hearing of him since they last had their battle in Caelid some time ago.

"Truthfully, I am not sure how I got here. I was slain, after many years, then brought back by Miquella in a new body. My memory still has gaps."
He wonders if she knew Miquella's whole plan.
"All I know is, I have found myself back in these Lands Between, and I needed something to do, so I started hunting beasts and other dangers. I'm not sure how long I have been dead, but quite a few made their way here."
This is quite the awkward situation, considering they were trying to kill each other the last time they met.
"How art thou doing?"

He had been wandering the lands, rather aimlessly. Looking for dangers to fight. He had eliminated some fallingstar beasts, one stray Astel in a mine (how did it even get there?) and a magma wyrm. What brought him here, so close to enemy territory? He wasn't sure.
He did not expect to run into Malenia, of all people.
"Sister. It has been a long time."
He hoped she did not desire a rematch any more than he did. Once was quite enough, even for him.

He's doing more or less alright, at least physically. Some of his wounds haven't fully healed yet, but as long as he is careful, they will be fine in time.
Yet... he is rather quiet. It's been so long since he was back here - and so much has changed. Knowing that almost everyone in his family, friend or foe, is gone... leaves him feeling hollow.
The lake is misty as usual, but something feels different. The golden light of the Erdtree was often dim in these parts, or even obscured by cliffs to the East. But when they ascend to the Academy gate, he sees it. Not brilliant gold, but on fire - and now he realizes embers are floating in the air instead of small specks of gold.
"What happened?"

"What happened?"
"Indeed..." He is exhausted, and just barely alive. He'll need a long rest before he can move.
Sleeping in the ash here is not that bad compared to some of the places he's been. At least it's relatively soft and dry.
He falls asleep, knowing he can trust them. He was never one to suspect betrayal, and even now, he doesn't.
Thankfully, he falls into a deep, dreamless slumber, and for now, he doesn't have to face the existential horror of what happened.

He can only hope he will be able to reconnect with his men. He does miss them...
"Aye, I know... I felt them slipping from my grasp when I died. Did any fall on populated areas?" He had been worried about that. He knew well how much devastation even a single meteor could cause, let alone the alien beasts that sometimes came with them.
