* a kestrel for a knave prompts
a kestrel for a knave is a novel by barry hines.
‘ it was just the way you told it, that’s all. ’
‘ because you’re scared, aren’t you? ’
‘ you’re a lone wolf now then? ’
‘ i wish you’d stop nagging. ’
‘ i don’t care, i’m not taking it. ’
‘ you were fast asleep on your feet. ’
‘ and how long have you had it? ’
‘ think i don’t know? ’
‘ found it. ’
‘ you were asleep weren’t you? ’
‘ no, it’s more than that. ’
‘ what do you mean? ’
‘ and don’t be still up when i come in. ’
‘ you made up for it though, didn’t you? ’
‘ i wish you’d shut up. ’
‘ that hurts! ’
‘ but i’m not that bad. ’
‘ you think you’re just unlucky, then? ’
‘ i’m no good. ’
‘ there’s no need to jump down my throat. ’
‘ you’re not going anywhere ‘til you’ve got all that mud off and had a proper wash. ’
‘ who the hell are you anyway? ’
‘ how are things at home these days? ’
‘ i know some short cuts coming back. ’
‘ what are you trying to do, kill me? ’
‘ well, of all the rotten tricks! ’

“what about the kind of gas that’s for farting?”
“ yeah, i don’t need gas to start a fire. i just need these two hands and a lack of supervision. ”

since annie can basically reality hop - by pointing at a book in the tree house and saying she wants to go there, and she does - i want to make it very clear that in my portrayal of this, i do not consider any of the worlds annie goes to to be ‘fake’. i consider them to be like her own world, and so does she. she’s basically dimension hopping or time hopping, if she goes to the past. when she goes to the world of merlin’s kingdom, or if she goes into, say, grishaverse, she doesn’t consider that going into a book, or a fandom, or whatever. those people are as real as her. she’s just going to a different reality, she’s visiting them. it’s just another world.

celestieu:
“ OH, UHM - I AM, YES. “ she feels some sense of relief that the implication of her indulgence may not have been caught with one so young, quickly tucking the glass aside on the clothed table nearby. both hands freed, madeline hooks them into her skirts, giving a slight lift to keep them off the floor as she dips into a small curtsy for the girl. funny - she’s done such a thing her entire life, welcoming her papa at the door and then all those she met beyond the borders of this land. but only now, with the stays suffocatingly tight around her, does she truly have a chance to appreciate the forced posture. though, appreciate is a strong word.
“ i am - uhm, i am madeline. “ she needs to stop with the catching over her words - to perfect her speech when talking to others, but she’s certain it will be forgiven now. softly, her initial bashfulness begins to dissolve, instead manifesting into a relaxed smile. the glow of her eyes is dull under the bright lights in here, yet they paint her countenance with the shimmer of pink her dress bears. “ i love your dress, it looks far more comfortable than mine. “ a slip of a laugh between her words, she hopes it can be understood for the joke it’s meant to be. “ what is your name? are you from this kingdom, or another? “
annie grins at her and mirrors the curtsy as best as she can, but it’s nowhere near perfect.
“i know they make dresses uncomfortable, but i don’t think they should. i think it’s silly.” there’s been so many times they land somewhere and jack gets to wear pants and a shirt and she’s in a dress, and it’s so much more work. and there’s no pockets, too! “it’s really pretty, though.”
it’s not bad to be from another kingdom. well, annie doesn’t think so. none of the information from merlin or morgana says that. while she knows enough, she doesn’t think she can lie about being from here to the princess.
“yeah!” she nods enthusiastically. “we’re very friendly though. it’s called frog’s creek. in the continent of ... pennsylvania.” she does her very best not to let her nose scrunch. technically it’s not really a lie - she does live in frog’s creek, and in the state of pennsylvania, but it’s not exactly like that. not that she has any moral issues with lying. “annie.” she’s not sure whether or not people shake hands here, so she curtsies again. “annie elaine smith.”
#feel free to figure out if she sees through that lie re: where she's from since ... that world doesn't exist in maddie's lmao#*that kingdom. which is technically a town. in a state. in the usa.

it’s Wednesday. You check the clock. It says Sunday. The seconds tic by too fast and too slow. The minutes don’t move. The hours don’t exist. It’s Tuesday.
#ask to tag /#time moves weird around annie after awhile#she's in that tree house so much that ... look there's a lot of stuff i wanna write about how teen and older annie will start to be able to#not consciously manipulate time but it doesn't act proper around her#you're with annie for four hours? you literally watched three movies together? an hour passed.

she’s been a lot of things before. a pirate and an astronaut and a shakespearean actress, an inventor and a wizard and a librarian. but she’s never really been a princess. ( she knows she’s not really going to be one. her mom isn’t the queen of frogs creek, pennsylvania. but maybe it’s an honorary thing, ‘cause she’s been a lot of honorary things. )
“how’d you learn to make that?’
`` @recklesswanderer liked !
“ YOU KNOW - “ her hands are quick, practiced with the art of handling delicate things. it allows her to mend the stems together as if they were meant to be there, bending the natural into places that belonged to be as they were. when finished, she sets to crown of flowers on annie’s head. “ now, you are a princess too. “

“I only have hands. I mean, I gotta save some food for me and Jack,” she’s not even blinking at the whole talking dog thing - just going through the backpack she was carrying for Jack as she talks. “We have some carrots. And some popcorn. Can you eat those?”
@recklesswanderer liked for a “canon dialogue” one line starter from the movie Homeward Bound!
❛❛ You want to shake a paw? Shake hands? Is that worth most of your food? All of your food? ❜❜
#annie regularly speaks to animals in camelot and doesn't realize this is a magical thing she can do#just thinks it's What Magical People Can Do#no annie it's like you and two others#so a dog that acn talk? A NORMAL THURSDAY FOR HER#cautionbewareofdog
