Translation of Yukimura Makoto's interview in Yatta! (part 2)
Part 1 is available here.
(12:37 - 12:53) The slave arc took many readers by surprise, including French readers. We would like to know why you chose to take the story in this direction, particularly Thorfinn's journey towards redemption.
Originally, I intended to start Vinland Saga with the slave arc. However, when I discussed it with my editor, he was unsure if it would sell well and if the readers would be interested, given that it portrayed vikings without any battle scenes. So I reconsidered my approach and decided to begin with the viking arc, which is a period of Thorfinn's life when he's constantly fighting. In hindsight, I find this choise more compelling, as it marks the moment when Thorfinn truly experiences and comes to understand violence. This realization was a crucial step for him to ultimately reject it. If you noticed a shift in tone between the slave arc and what came before, it's because I structured my story in a deliberately different way.
Comment from guest : I just wanted to say that we really enjoyed this arc—it’s just those who only came for the fight scenes who didn’t quite get the shift (laughs).
(14:11 - 14:24) With the slave arc, you portrayed both the depths of depression and the journey of healing. Was that your intention from the start?
Certainly. We can say that I wanted to draw Vinland saga beause I wanted to write the slave arc. I wanted to explore how one can grow stronger after failure and rebuild oneself. My hope was that, through this chapter of Thorfinn's life, readers who have faced hardships and setbacks could find some comfort and strength to rise again.
(15:06 - 15:20) Mangakas often have a favorite character in their stories. For example, Tooyama Akira liked Piccolo the most (Dragon Ball). So who is your favorite character in Vinland Saga ?
It's very difficult for me to answer. I could say my favorite character is Thorkell, but it is also Hild, Sigurd, Einar, and of course, Thorfinn - not to mention Bug-Eyes and many characters like the native americans that appear in the lastest chapters (laughs). That said, I think my true favorite is Askeladd. I really enjoyed drawing him, and he ended up surpassing my expectations. Initially, I saw him as just Thorfinn's mentor, but the way readers responded to him was special. He gained far more depth than I originally envisioned.
Guest comment : Askeladd is my favorite character as well. Not only does he serve as Thorfinn's ultimate goal, but he also becomes his mentor and a surrogate father figure. The misery Thorfinn endures later stems from his inability to achieve that goal. I’m a huge fan of Askeladd, so thank you for creating such a character.
I'm happy that you love Askeladd so much (laughs).
(16:47 - 17:03) Among all your extremely masculine male characters, you manage to draw female characters that are all different yet powerful, such as Hild or Gudrid. Do you spend more time developping your female characters or does it feel natural for you?
I spend three times as much time writing female characters compared to male ones, simply because I feel quite ignorant when it comes to women (laughs). Every male character has a little something in common with myself, so I can draw inspiration from my own behavior and experiences when writing them. It's much more challenging for female characters, as I have to give them traits I don’t personally possess. I often wonder if what I've written is accurate—what would a female reader think of my female character? As a result, my female characters tend to be very active and energetic, perhaps because that's the type of woman I admire.
(18:14 -18:18) You mentioned drawing inspiration from your own behavior when writing male characters. Which character do you think you resemble the most?
Definitely Thorfinn (laughs). Because, much like him when I was younger, I was a bit of a lost cause. Well, I didn’t carry a blade and stab people around, but I did hurt a lot of people. Of course, within the bounds of the law. But like Thorfinn, the efforts I made and the support I received helped me grow, and that's why I think Thorfinn resembles me the most.
(19:27 - 19:35) Going back on my previous question about female characters, can you see yourself ever writing a manga with a female protagonist?
Wow (laughs). To pull that off, I’d need to do some serious research on the matter. I think it would take me at least 30 years! (everyone laughs)
(19:48 - 20:14) I’d like to return to Askeladd for a moment. I see him as a father figure to Thorfinn, as he helped him survive and provided him with the tools to navigate this world. It's a controversial topic, but I want to ask you directly: can we truly consider Askeladd as Thorfinn’s father?
I believe it’s up to each reader to form their own opinion about this character. It’s valid to see him as Thorfinn’s substitute father or as an enemy. For me, Askeladd shaped Thorfinn and made him stronger. In that sense, I tend to view him as one of his fathers, but again, everyone is free to have their own perspective on the matter.
(20:50 - 21:05) You’ve spoken about the importance of research, especially when writing a historical manga. Can you tell us how you first came across Thorfinn Karlsefni Thordarson? When did this real historical figure become your main character, and what about him left a lasting impression on you?
I first learned about Thorfinn, an Icelandic merchant, in high school history class. When I found out that Vikings had reached the American continent 500 years before Christopher Columbus, I could hardly believe it—it seemed so strange. Why would an Icelandic merchant choose to sail west instead of heading to Europe, which was much closer and offered more opportunities for wealth and power? This mystery stayed with me for years, and with Vinland Saga, I sought to explore an answer. Why did these people, instead of turning to Europe, venture into the unknown, even thougb at that time they believed that the world ended at a massive cliff? What drove them to set sail into uncertainty, and what were their true motivations?
(22:24 -22:34) Your manga explores the inevitability of violence and the internal struggle to choose pacifism. In light of current global geopolitical events, do you feel that your message has become even more relevant?
I began Vinland Saga during an unprecedented period of peace for humanity, and at the time, I questioned the relevance of my project. Does it make sense to talk about peace when the world is already at peace? Someone once told me that it does—because if you start speaking about peace only after war has begun, it’s already too late. Today, the world has taken a dangerous turn, but I hope my work can offer readers a perspective to reflect on what peace truly is and how we can preserve it.
I have to admit, it wasn’t easy to answer such a serious question with the Doraemon anime music playing in the background (everyone laughs).
(23:53 - 24:06) I just got a message from our producer. The slave arc reminds him of this quote : "A strong man is not the one who strikes down others, but the one who controls his anger". Do you agree with this quote ?
I completely agree with this statement. In my view, those who create enemies are, first and foremost, people who don’t like themselves. It reminds me of an African proverb that says, 'A man who hates others is a man who hates himself.' To me, there is no duty more urgent or essential than facing ourselves honestly, engaging in deep introspection, and understanding the roots of our anger. Learning to love ourselves is, in my opinion, the key to a more peaceful world. And those who can achieve this are truly the strongest.
(25:03 - 25:04) So in the end, isn’t the real battle the one against our own ego?
Absolutely. I believe the hardest battle is the one where we choose not to fight at all. How can we avoid confrontation? How do we fight against ourselves to resist falling into this endless cycle?
(25:29 - 25:39) You questioned why these explorers ventured into the unknown. In a way, isn’t being a mangaka like being an explorer of a blank page? How do you find the motivation each morning to work?
Let's go on an adventure from now on! (he start singing We Are!, first opening of One Piece, from 25:45 to 25:47).
Every morning when I wake up I sing and give myself strength while facing the screen of my drawing tablet (laughs).
End of interview : the guests thank Yukimura Makoko for coming.
That's it for the interview, I hope you enjoyed it!
edit : when quoting any part of my translation, please keep in mind that I translated the Frenvh dub which is a translation of what Yukimura Makoto said so there might be some inacurracies.

Translation of Yukimura Makoto's interview in Yatta! (part 1)
Disclaimer : My first language is French so there might be some inacurracies when translating from French/Japanese to English. I will try my best to stay as faithful as possible to what was being said. If you see any mistakes please let me know.
Click here for the full interview (in French, Yukimura Makoto's voice is dubbed by a French speaker). The interview was conducted on January 28th 2025.
I will only be translating the questions and the answers. I will provide a quick summary for the intro.
(00:00 - 2:22) Intro : The anchor introduces the guests and thanks Yukimura for coming today.
(2:23 - 2:45) Quick sumary of Vinland Saga
(2:46 - 3:02) Your drawings showcase stunning landscapes and beautifully crafted backgrounds. The fight scenes are incredibly detailed. Do you create them with animation in mind, envisioning how they would move on screen?
Merci beaucoup (laughs). Well, I always strive to draw as precisely as possible. However, when I started Vinland Saga, I wasn't thinking about a potential anime adaptation. I drew freely, depicting violence without constraints. So when I found out it would be adapted into an anime, I was very surprised.
(3:38 - 3:46) Richard Fleischer's movie The Vikings was a major inspiration for you. Were there any other works that marked a turning point in the creation of Vinland Saga ?
The movie Erik the Viking starring Tim Robbins left a stong impression on me. It tells the story of a viking who begins to question his way of life, as he constantly steals to fund his next expedition, only to get trapped in an endless cycle of violence. A young woman calls him out on his actions and he gradually comes to a realization. This film left a strong impression on me.
(4:29 - 4:44) I learnt in one of your interview that you hate violence. Yet, Vinland Saga is filled with violence - both psychological and physical. Many fans are drawn to your work because of this. Do you portray violence so extensively as a way to condem it?
Si (note : French word for yes). Absolutely. My main character - Thorfinn - comes to reject all forms of violence as he grows. In order to understand why he rejects violence, I needed to clearly illustrate the reasons behind it. That's why it was a challenging process for me. However, I aimed to depict violence as precisely and directly as possible.
(5:29 - 5:38) In that sense, would you say Thorfinn’s journey of redemption is a message from the older Makoto Yukimura to his younger self?
Yes, in a way, it might be a message to myself. Today I am 48 and it's true that this series has been a way to reflect on my accomplishments. At the beginning of my carrer, I was impulsive and self-absorbed - perhaps not always considerate of those around me. I may have acted rashly and hurt people along the way. Like Thorfinn, I hope I can find forgiveness.
(6:20 - 6:33) You are extremely active on social media. Why is it important for you ? If Thorfinn had Twitter/X, what would he post?
Social media allows me to receive direct feedback from my readers—something unimaginable at the start of my career. That’s why I try to respond as much as possible to those who reach out to me.
As for what Thorfinn would say on Twitter, it’s hard to picture. I imagine young Thorfinn would ignore everyone completely. But as he matures and settles in Vinland, he would probaby be saying, “Thank you” and “Thank you so much” to his followers.
(7:37 - 7:49) People often call you the "GOAT" and at first, you thought they were referring to the animal. Do compliments like these give you confidence in your writing and art?
Actually, the first time someone called me the "GOAT" and sent me a picture of a goat, I thought I was being harassed (laughs). But once I understood what it meant, it made me really happy. When you work on a series a long as mine, it's like reading the same sentence over and over. After so many years, it's hard to assess the quality of your own work. So when I receive compliments on social media, it feels like a comforting pat on the shoulder.
(8:48 - 8:59) In a past interview, you mentioned wanting to leave the past behind and focus on writing a story set in the future. Do you already have an idea for your next project?
Yes, I have a rough idea of what I want to write next. But to be honest, after spending over 20 years working on Vinland Saga, I’m completely exhausted. I’m not sure if I’ll dive into a new series right away. It will be a battle between my desire to start something new and my own laziness.
(9:19 - 9:30) One scene that left a lasting impression on all of us is when Thorfinn allows himself to be (badly) beaten. Is not fighting back the secret to finding peace ?
It's a very profound question that invites serious reflexion. I've been exploring the theme of violence for over 20 years, and one question I've often wrestled with is how to break the never-ending cycle of violence. It's extremely difficult to answer simply. When you look at the police for example, they are armed and sometimes respond to violence with more violence. It's hard to stop violence through passivity or a pacifist stance. At the same time, I do believe that violence begets violence. So, if we want to end the cycle, someone has to take it upon themselves and make the sacrifice of not striking back.
(10:42 - 10:54) When Thorfinn gave up on his revenge, your editor (tantousha) said it would end the series. How did you convince them to trust you ?
I didn’t have to work hard to convince my editor. In fact, it was the support of the readers that allowed me to continue this series. When I told my editor that my character would become a slave and stop fighting, they thought the series would be over. However, the sales didn’t drop, and people kept reading, which motivated me to continue. I was prepared for the series to be discontinued, but that didn’t happen. I want to thank all my readers for sticking with me.
(11:45 - 11:52) So did your editor tell you "you were right" or did you say nothing (ie not tell him "I was right") and be the bigger person/stayed humble ?
It's true that my editor did not express any remorse about their doubts (laughs). To be honest, I wasn’t entirely sure that my readers would continue to support me the way they did. Once again, I’m incredibly grateful to my readers, as their support gives me confidence—not only in my work but also in my ability to write freely and let the story unfold as I want.
That's it for the first part of the interview! I hope you enjoyed reading it. I will try to translate the second part tomorrow.

Transforme l’avenir, Rebellion Star !

[Spoiler Free Review] Hanayaka Nari, Waga Ichizoku

All images were taken from the official website.
Since I really enjoyed writing my first review, I’m back with another one~ This one will be a bit shorter.
General information
Title : Hanayaka Nari, Waga Ichizoku (華ヤカ哉、我ガ一族)
Developer : Ichi Column & Vingt-et-un. Systems Corporation
Publishers : Idea Factory & Otomate
Platform : PSP
Release Date (MM/DD/Y) : 07/01/2010
Length : +50 hours (slow reading)
Age Rating : Cero B (+12)
I think there are still people playing this game even if it’s quite old since Otomate keeps porting it to different platforms (PSVita and Nintendo Switch). I got myself the PSP version.
Story
Our protagonist, Haru, comes from a poor background and starts working as a maid at the Miyanomori mansion to support her family. She meets the six Miyanomori brothers – each born from a different mother.
It does sound pretty fun at first for Haru who used to work at a factory. However, she quickly understands that it is not going to be an easy task - especially with those brothers who treat her like garbage.
A short while after she starts working, the head of the family, Genichirou, announces that he’s going to retire and therefore needs to chose the next head. He challenges all his sons to entertain him and collect points: the first one to reach ten points will be chosen...
(Check vndb for another summary)
The characters
About the heroine
Her personality was pretty common : she’s a clumsy airhead, and an idiot (to be very blunt) One might think that this is the ultimate combo to make a character annoying. Nonetheless, I found her very cute. Her design also meets my taste (I love braids hehe). I love characters who try their best no matter how hard they are struggling. Moreover, her personality was a great contrast with most LIs’, and allowed funny and adorable dynamics.
Miyanomori Tadashi : (34) Serious megane dude x ore-sama x oldest son

(CV : Miyauchi Atsushi)
He lives to work and works because he likes working (this man HAS NO LIFE).
I’m usually not into those guys who look stuck up because I want spicy development. However, he was unexpectdly awkward, which resulted in hilarious relashionship development with Haru, especially in the good ending (I swear I cracked on my bed like a psycho).
I!! Like!! Dense!! and!! pure!! Ossans!! (hey Nanase Izuki ⊂(・ω・*⊂) )
He was kinda harsh with Haru at first and didn’t trust her at all but he gradually opens up and listens to her troubles as a maid.
His route dealt with themes such a friendship and social status. It didn’t reveal anything about the Miyanomori family...
Tsundere rating : 1.5/5
Is this character dense ? yes / no
Mom rating ; Sumida Sanae : 0/5 I didn’t like her :((
Isami : (31) military x tsundere #1 x idiot

(CV : Tasaka Hideki)
Heyyy it’s the first tsundere!! His relationship unfolds almost the same as Tadashi : tough at first, sweet by the end.
It was hilarious how his personality did a 180 : from tsundere to absolute idiot sweetheart. However, I have to say that I was sometimes bothered by what he was saying as it was borderline manipulative when he wanted to sound sweet... HMM...
Except that, his route was well balanced.
Tsundere rating : 3.5/5
Is this character dense ? yes / no
Mom rating ; Honjouin Toki : 2.5/5 (She was okayish?)
Shigeru : (26) crossdresser x carefree x teenage crisis

(CV : Maeda Takeshi)
I’ll go straight to the point : I don’t like him (;⌣̀_⌣́)
This might be a bit spoilery but I found him very childish even though he is 26. His relationship with his dad is terrible but that doesn’t justifiy how annoying he is. He also had a lot of “what is this feeling?” trope during his route, and I felt like it wasn’t handled the way I like it. The two previous bros also took quite a long time before noticing how they felt about Haru but at least they were cute trying to figure out...
Tsundere rating : 0/5
Is this character dense ? darn yes / no
Mom rating ; Yasuda Shizuko : 2.5/5 (I honestly have no opinion about her so I’m just going to give her a the average mark)
Susumu : (22) good boy x dense x angst

I liked him since the beginning because he is the only guy who has always treated Haru like a humain being, unlikes his brothers!!
I thought he would be a good boy whose route wouldbe fluffy and tame... I’ve got it all wrong. He is not that kind... He’s willing to make huge sacrifices for the sake of his beliefs.
I think he has quite a weird relationship with his friend, but no complaints since all the drama was necessary for Susumu to realize his own feelings.
I can’t say anymore because of spoilers huhh
Tsundere rating : 0/5
Is this character dense ? HE IS DARN DENSE / no
Mom rating ; Ariyoshi Fumiko : 4.5/5 (she was very supportive but a bit of an airhead)
Hiroshi : (18) childish x creative x growth

He’s that cute and happy guy in otome games who likes playing pranks on others...
He’s only 18 and yet, I feel like he has grown so much in his route (unlike SHIGERU). He was very pure and assertive. I was glad that there was finally a guy open about his feelings. His childish side didn’t bother me at all since it was to be expected from the previous routes.
I loved how the ending and his decisions showed that he had grown to be a fine man. His character development was the best imo.
That glow up five years later tho...
Tsundere rating : 0/5
Is the character dense ? yes / not really / no
Mom rating ; Saeki Yoshi : 4.5/5 (!!!spoiler!!! : I liked the fact that his mom accepted his relationship with Haru)
Masashi : tsundere #2 x sharp tongue x clever

What a brat. What a smart brat. I have mixed feelings about this character. I like and hate him at the same time XD stop insulting me
Although he keeps calling Haru an ‘idiot’ (because he’s such a tsundere), he grows fond of her (´・ᴗ・ ` ) He knows nothing about love, and because of some minor *incident* he thought that he had to take responsibility and marry the heroine lmao
Anyway, the latter half of his route is drama with his father (actually, everybody got drama because of Genichirou, that prick) that he handled pretty well despite the fact that he’s the youngest. Playing him last before the secret character makes a lot of sense, as it completely exposes the character’s identity and objectives).
Tsundere rating : 5/5 (I’ll give him a Tsundere Award)
Is the character dense ? yes / HE IS DARN SHARP??? (I was impressed during that one scene where he carefully used his brain to understand what was going on, unlike his older bros)
Mom rating ; Imura Chiyoko : 0/5 (worst mom ever)
Secret character : (???) double-faced x and no more tag because I can’t think of non-spoilers
I can only say I liked the secret character, even though I would have liked to see less angst... That will probably come in the fandisc...
My character ranking : Hiroshi > Susumu > Secret Character > Tadashi = Isami = Masashi > Shigure
I really liked them all though ;;; (except Shigeru *coughs*)
Cons
Long common route, which feels tedious to skip when changing routes.
Bad resolution on PSP
Each route follows more or less the same pattern
Pros
Animated backgrounds and lip-sync (even though this game is from 2010 ?!!!)
Large cast of suitors, you’ll eventually find one you like
Very cute optional “quest” system
The bottom line
I kinda regret not getting the Vita port for high res CGs *cries* Since I started playing on PSP, I’ll probably buy the other games on PSP. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Anyway, I can positively recommend this game to anybody. I think it has everything: plot, fleshed-out characters, funny moments, action, mystery, angst… and romance of course. I was pleasantly surprised by the dynamic between the brothers since I thought they would be at each other’s throat to become the heir. Turns out I was wrong (phew!) and it is actually the complete opposite. Their bickering was truly heart-warming ~

Official髭男dism - I LOVE... Lyrics (KAN/ROM/ENG/FR)
This is one of my rare attempts at translating lyrics. I’m far from being fluent! If you have any comments/questions/feedback or found mistakes/typos, please tell me!
Boku ga mitsumeru keshiki no sono naka ni
The scenery that I’m looking at
Le paysage que je regarde
Kimi ga haitte kara kawari hateta sekai wa
Has completely changed since you’ve entered
Itsumo sotsunaku konashita hibi no mannaka
The middle of the days flawlessly following up

Collapses without opposing the mysterious gravitation
