Exhaling, Ariadne returned the nod — though her own amusement faltered with a silent 'oh', and she turned to search out another. Viktor wasn't here but she found his partner. Jayce... was like an Uncle, in a way.
After all, she had been an apprentice to Viktor since she was of age, and it was difficult not to strike up a bond after a decade of being in that workshop with him. It hit a little harder when they told her Jayce would be going too, and now Somnus...
Her world was falling away in pieces.
She approached Jayce to quickly explain. She would repair the other training dummies tomorrow, she was sorry for the hassle. Jayce being Jayce simply sent her off with a kind smile, and off she went, rejoining her guardian properly.
The walk with Somnus was draped in a thick silence that neither one of them dared to break.
It was only when the beginnings of the fracture crept in that his voice cut through the night. Her head turned, caught her guardian's eye, and she gave a small shake. No. She didn't think so.

"Determination." she answered. Her attention shifted to the scars of the fracture that littered Lumière. It was such a sudden leap to action, the way she unsheathed the chroma-infused sword — the very one Somnus had handed down to her — and with a criss-cross of her blade she opened up a void that rippled and expanded, damaging the hardened minerals. What took days and weeks for men to chip away by hand, she scattered into debris as if it were easy.
Only, it wasn't easy.
Nothing about controlling a void was easy.
Yet she wielded a spell that she had been so scared of. One that Somnus himself had taught her in smaller lessons. She was running where she had previously been tip-toeing.
"... I am already older than any children of mine will ever be." Ariadne spoke up, her tone gentled. Slowly, she sheathed her weapon and relaxed out of her battle stance to turn back to him, her arms slightly raised by her wise. "Look at me. If the expeditions continue to fail... I am the age that your child will gommage." She held his gaze meaningfully. It wasn't a jab that she aimed lightly. It was a terrifying truth. "Your child would be a year younger than I am if they set out on an expedition. Old age will be when people reach puberty. That isn't fair — losing you and Aerith isn't fair — losing Jayce and Viktor isn't fair — and learning today, that I will be going on an expedition completely alone? Nothing is fair, and I have to prepare for the worst case possible."
Little Ariadne Xeha Nihilis. She had always had that strike about her , a little mischief under that will and urge to always be perfect and a prodigy at all.
Somnus hummed amused, letting his tongue click as he got up again. His eyes found those of Ariadne, letting her tease hang in the air for another moment. Then he nodded.
“A walk elsewhere sounds perfect.”
It gave them some space. And some privacy. Maybe that walk even could mend the current fracture of their bond. Somnus had raised Ariadne and her twin like they had been his own. Sometimes more children, sometimes more siblings. It was strange. And yet they were a family due to the dark circumstances of their world.
And he would have given a lot to have spent his last year with her and Vergil. But that was not in the cards anymore. He needed to protect them – and he needed to protect Aerith and the little life she carried now.
So, he had to go.
And Ariadne would have to learn to accept that.
It was only about three alleys away from the area where the Expeditioners trained… and the cobblestone seemed to be tinged with a translucent blue light. Reflecting from painted stone and the mass that the fracture had left behind and now gushed out of every crevice and broken ruin in some areas of Lumiere. And there in this calm silence, Somnus could finally speak up.
“Are you letting your emotions dictate your powers tonight?”

"We each need to find our own inspiration. Sometimes it’s not easy.”
Those were words that Ariadne needed to hear, even if she didn't want to. The expression on her face seemed to plead with Enok to take it back — he didn't, and he wouldn't.

"I'm not used to everything feeling so hard." she admitted, whisper-quiet.
Did she make things harder than they needed to be? Absolutely. Day in and day out. She wasn't blind to her own perfectionism, it was a thorn in her side most days, when she simply wanted to put something down as it was, without it having to be polished to her standard.
But... tasks still came easy. She could fall into a state like meditation and focus on something for hours on end.
Now? She didn't even want to pick up her paint brush. She lost her spark. Her motivation. Like her creative flow had been robbed from her.
Slowly, Ariadne leaned her weight against Enok, coming to rest against him heavily. "I've never felt like I couldn't do something. I... don't like it."

Kiki’s Delivery Service {Sentence Starters}
“This is… quaint.“
“Don’t worry. Hold still.“
“Won’t we get in trouble?“
“Can you turn on the radio?“
“We better rest here until it’s dry.“
“Well, we’re not too conspicuous.“
“Just follow your heart and keep smiling.“
“And this would be interesting because…?”
“Maybe I need to find my own inspiration.”
“Smile so we can make a good impression.”
“This is perfect. I’m soaked through, down to the bone.“
“Flying used to be fun until I started doing it for a living.“
“Painting and magical powers seem very similar to me.“
“I think it’s better to leave with decorum and great dignity.“
“If I lose my magic, that means I’ve lost absolutely everything.“
“You’d think they’d never seen a girl and a cat on a broom before.“
“We each need to find our own inspiration. Sometimes it’s not easy.”
“I’m going to put my hands together and pray that you’re not serious!”
“Very smooth. You definitely know how to make a good first impression.“
“They’re calling you an egg stealer, and you don’t wanna know what else!“
“Seems like that other me… the cheerful and honest one, went away somewhere.”
“All right, first: don’t panic! Second: don’t panic! And third: did I mention not to panic?“
“I think something’s wrong with me. I make friends, then suddenly I can’t bear to be with any of them.“
“Without even thinking about it, I used to be able to fly. Now I’m trying to look inside myself and find out how I did it.”
“I’ve decided not to leave this town. Maybe I can stay and find some other nice people who will like me and accept me for who I am.”

There was an odd pull here.
Everything in Ariadne screamed to go back — yet, here she was, stood at the edge of creation and staring into an unknown. Her physical body wanted to claw back to safety and to certainty, she could not deny that...
But her inner-self, her mind, her very soul drifted closer to that unknown.
She wanted to lift the veil and see what was beyond.
Had she been alone, she would have already leapt. There was a recklessness in her nature, ingrained into her, once she was away from her normal structure she reshaped herself into another her. The kind of Ariadne who disregarded the rules and wasn't so careful.
She wasn't alone, though. Her mentor, Viktor, stood within this great unknown. Distantly, she could hear Somnus calling for her, desperate and pleading. She took a small step back, one that rippled like ink.
Though Viktor's sudden voice gave her pause. She immediately looked over to him and listened...
Her head turned even more, sparing a glance over her shoulder, to where she could still hear Somnus. She understood what Viktor was saying. They weren't simply exploring for the sake of it. She drew in a breath and her hair lightly shifted around her face as she whipped her head to look ahead.

"Actually," Ariadne replied, dipping her rapier into a sliver of golden paint, "your first lesson for me isn't one that you would remember."
Her sword moved like a paint brush, giving shape to a doorway. With a flick, the golden outline took hold, and paper tore away, peeling open a door to a world adjacent from their own.
"Being smart is not enough. You also have to be quick." She glanced sidelong and offered a small smile. "We can't linger. Are you ready?"

↱ = being lost with them.
They were similar. And yet completely different. Viktor had never seen it before, but now his eyes were opened. For years she had been his apprentice, from the day she had aced that little test to the day she had joined the same expedition like him, she had been a prodigy. A natural gift. Like his own.
And yet Ariadne’s went so much further, interwoven with this world. This… paint. ´
She had a natural inclination to it… while he… he had grabbed the opportunity the Hexcore had opened up and clawed into it, and he wouldn’t let go, now that he knew the truth.
Turning to Ariadne, Viktor mustered her, as if he wasn’t sure she was real. What even was here?
The ground was a black mirror, like marble, with veins of gold, dripping up into an endless dusky sky above them. Like still-wet paint. They were at the edge of the canvas. The very limit that they should be able to reach – should.
If they went further, they would fall off. Leap off. Into a world beyond. Into a new reality.
“Ariadne.”
“What was the first lesson I have given you?”
If you want to change the world, don’t ask for permission.

The scent of lavender did wonders for the usually-rigid princess. Even if she had been born without any titles, there was a primness about Ariadne that would persevere regardless of her lot in life. But something rare had transpired.
She had a true and trusted friend to lean on.
It was almost unnatural, the way she relaxed upon the grass and pillowed herself on Vale's lap. Yet it was something that looked so normal. So unbelievably common that few would ever remark upon such a scene.
The humming helped to further lull her. Honestly, poor Vale wouldn't gain their 'freedom' back if they continued, it was wise of them to pause. Their initial comment earned a small hum — yes, she was 'here', yes, she was listening.
A moment passed and a smile pulled like a thread at the corner of her lips. First she opened her eyes just-so to cast a sidelong look up at them, but then she turned her head to look fully up the kindly knight she held in her heart.
"I feel it too. The happiness, that is. I try not to complain because I understand I have grown up with so many privileges, though it doesn't make the things I would complain about go away..." She could speak openly with them. Not once had they ever twisted her words back against her, it wasn't in their nature.
"I have so much freedom now, and I feel like I have learned so much yet barely have I scratched the surface. I have you to thank. If I hadn't met you I would have turned back by now."

[ LAVENDER ] Ari lays her head in Vale's lap and closes her eyes.
𝐀 𝐂𝐈𝐓𝐘 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐒 .
Hills of lavender, a bird's eye view would reveal a sea of purple petals that perfectly caught the drops of moonlight. The moon, waxing brightly in the sky, just having left its half-full phase a few days prior, was Vale and Ariadne's guide towards the west. From town to town, the lone knight escorted the runaway princess. Each stop they rested at, more memories were saved, more memories were made. A small journal rested in Vale's pocket, a memoir of things, a sketchbook of sights.
Their lips slightly parted, Vale hummed a soft tune they had learned a few villages back. The melody was soft, dancing in Vale's falsetto, a voice crack joining in every here and there, but none of them seemed to open Ariande's eyes. Oh, Ariadne, a most trusted friend, the biggest miracle they've ever met their entire journey. The world seemed to move around her, the energy surrounding herself just dazzling and basking in the moonlight.
"You know, wayfarer--" Vale's song paused as they glanced down to her face, their own lips turning upwards in glee, a shiny toothed smile sent Ariadne's way. "I'm happy our paths crossed. I don't think I'd want to share this moonlit night with anyone else. I hope all our nights are like this, filled with adventure, with a safe place to call home."
