Conclusion
How have key principles and methods used in the field of design thinking been evident in the project for you?
The core of Fab-Use grew from the process of human centred design. That is , examining the environment around me (University) and attempting to create a service that will innovate and improve the lives of students.
What are the key moments of insight you have gained in the project? Here you can refer to particular activities, readings or collaboration?
The Key moments of insight in the project was the realisation of the large scope of work needed to be done to bring this project to life.
Describe design thinking. How do you now understand this and how is this relevant to your own design practice?
Design thinking is now considering others interests, wants and needs in my design process. It is now especially relevant in the ideation phase of my designs.

Project Challenge Question
How can the textile industry be more sustainable?

Introduction
“[sustainability is the] enhanced connectedness with our sense of ethics, with each other and the natural world” (Ehrenfeld, 2008)
Textiles [fabrics and garments] have historically been at the core of cultural identities, individual self-expression and basic protection (Gardetti Miguel, Torres Laura) for centuries. Whilst the fundamental purpose of textiles remains the same, the notion of fashion has morphed into an all-consuming industry with far-reaching effects and consequences. Steadily growing in economic share by 5.5% each year in the past decade (Amed, Berg, Brathery, Hedrich, 2016), society’s cycle of consumption and disposal of trends have contributed to the creation of the second largest polluter in the world (Edge, 2019), creating an ever-present need for sustainable shifts in industry practices.
With 95% of textiles in landfill holding the potential to be recycled and 15% of textiles used in the manufacturing process ending up on the cutting room floor, it is clear a systemic shift is needed to change fashion industry practices to minimise their harmful impact on the environment.

Stage One: Discover
Pollution to production countries waterways through fertilizers, pesticides, chemicals and toxic colours are derivatives of the textile manufacturing process (Mali, Bhart, 2010). Discharging 2.5 billion tonnes of wastewater in China per year (Edge, 2019), textile effluents percolate into cities surface water, groundwater and soil adversely affecting environments. Riddled with ethical issues from fibre to fabric, cotton farming has widely been accused of using child labour (ILO, 2019)

Stock Destruction
In an effort to increase transparency in their business practices, Burberry released an environmental report highlighting their stock destruction practices (Guardian, 2019). To protect the brands exclusivity and status, the brand burns excess stock from past seasons, totalling to $52 million worth of excess stock, burnt in specialist incinerators that harness energy from the process (Guardian, 2019). Whilst the brand attempts to justify this practice in the name of protecting its intellectual property, it is difficult to fathom the amount of production and manufacturing of textiles to create clothing that has no defects of faults to have it incinerated.
Furthermore, brands such as Nike allegedly slash excess new season trainers to avoid counterfeit selling whilst H&M has repeatedly been accused of burning, slashing and binning excess product, although neither of these brands offer transparency into their practices (Guardian, 2019).

High Rates of Consumption
Clothing production has doubled in the past 15 years due to the introduction of fast fashion in response to high rates of consumer consumption. Garments on average are being made cheaper, worn less and discarded quicker than ever before, reducing quality and longevity of garments enormously.
African nations obtain 80% of clothing from second-hand garments sent from Western nations (Cooper, 2018), although in response to the degrading quality of garments Rwanda has opted to use their own textile productions and reject donations.
