Garden of the Gods | Colorado Springs, CO.
Right outside of Colorado Springs is 1334 acres of Towering red rock formations. With Miles of paved and unpaved trails to walk on and countless views of incredible rock formations and the surrounding mountains. Garden of the Gods was originally owned by railroad magnate Charles Elliot Perkins and given to the city of Colorado Springs in 1909.
Originally purchased in 1879 by Charles Elliot Perkins to build a summer home and complete a railroad from Chicago to Colorado Springs. The railroad never made it to Colorado Springs and Perkins never built on it, preferring the land be left in its natural state. Perkins died in 1907 before the land could be made into a Public park, and his children gifted it to Colorado Springs. It would be forever known as Garden of the Gods and be free to the public.
There’s plenty to do at the Garden of the Gods if you just wanna see the sights, or do some rock climbing, there’re tons to do. They’re approximately 5 miles of trails for mountain biking, hiking or horseback riding. The Visitor and Nature Center holds free naturalist-led walks daily. With more amenities than we could get to in one day, we didn’t get to see everything. A living history museum and the historic Rock Ledge Historic Site are just a couple of the other amenities to enjoy while visiting.
Our trip to The Garden of the Gods was a great experience. The red rock formations towering over you are incredible testaments of the beautiful world around us. I’m definitely going to have to go back and check out more of the park, check back for part 2 where we visit Balancing Rock at Garden of the Gods!

Bishops Castle | Rye, Co.
9,200 feet above sea level and 50 miles away from the closest city in southern Colorado stands a 160 ft castle. “Built by one man with the help of god.” Bishops Castle began construction in 1959 as a family cabin for Jim Bishop and his Family. Young Jim Bishop at the age of 15 paid $450 for the 2 ½ acre plot of land the castle stands on today. It began as a project he and his father, Willard started to build a family cabin. Jim decided after several summers of friends and community members stopping by and telling him it looked like he was building a castle, that he would build a castle. At this point Willard stopped helping because castles are huge and “thats to much work.” Jim continued to build and what began as a small one room cottage turned into the country’s largest one man project.
Our visit to Bishops castle was definitely a entertaining one. The entrance was exactly what you would expect from a castle, huge gated entrance with a bridge over a mote. You walk up into the gate and then can walk over a bridge to a commons area where you can check out there gift shop. The castle is free for everyone but id suggest giving a donation. Everything that was built and will be built in the future is funded off the donations.
My fear of heights didn’t hit me until I was standing on Jims hand built walkway along the outer third floor of the castle. Looking down through what your standing on to see nothing but the thin iron work he made from rail road ties, and then the ground. About 30 feet down. I stepped onto this after climbing about 3 stories of steps about 2 feet wide and had only enough room for half of my foot. The main room with stained windows can be used for weddings if you contact them from there website. Theres 2 towers to climb up, one that takes you up to the top of the castle at 160 feet. The trip there is up a long spiral steel stair case. The top is one step with the only safety being your own ability not to fall out. The view was breath taking. Being able to see all around you and seeing the towns in a distance and then just mountain and desert. The other tower takes you to an orb like structure and a iron bridge that doesn’t really go anywhere, but if you feel like doing something sketchy, crossing it is for you. Every step makes it shake and you can hear the steel moving around. But the view and being able to see the craftsmanship is worth it all. The crane he built to bring up the stones still stands on top of one of the castles towers. Making you realize that it all was built by one person.
The whole castle that was built by one mans hands 9200 ft above sea level is an incredible work of art. If your ever in Southern Colorado, Bishops Castle is a must see. And if your looking for a way to challenge your fear of heights. This is definitely one of the ways.
