The Seven Virtues in Reus (Camp de Tarragona, Catalonia).
Ash Wednesday is the last day of Carnival week. During the Carnival festivities, people are encouraged to behave in a hedonistic way, without the Christian rules of morality. When Carnival ends, it’s the beginning of Lent, a 40-days period that traditionally was for getting closer to God through prayer, devotion, and where things like eating meat were banned. Though most people don’t follow the Catholic Lent rules anymore, Carnival still remains one of the most popular festivities of the year.
To transition between these two opposite periods, for some years in the city of Reus they have the new traditions of the Seven Virtues. On Ash Wednesday, a personification of Lent and the Seven Virtues dance on the streets of the city.
Lent wears all black and has seven feet hanging from under her skirt (in the Catalan tradition, Lent is always personified as la Vella Quaresma, or “Old Lady Lent”: and elderly woman with seven feet that works as a calendar, for every week we remove one leg to count down the 7 weeks).
The Seven Virtues are dressed in all white. They represent Humility, Generosity, Chastity, Temperance, Patience, Charity and Diligence.
The opposite is also true at the beginning of Carnival week. The Seven Deadly Sins also have their own dance:
