Yeah, there we go. See? Things were starting to be, almost... normal again! I mean, Yugi was still a little worried, it was sort of hard for him not to be in this situation, but at least things weren't weird anymore. Er- Well, things were still pretty weird, but not bad weird, at least. No one was upset or thinking about walking away, and things could be... casual! Or maybe that wasn't right, either. Well, whatever it was; whatever this situation- this opportunity- he was glad, and that's all that really mattered.
So what if he couldn't find the right words to explain it? Wasn't that to be expected? After all, it's not every day you get to see your best friend who used to be a ghost who you set at rest in a crazy dramatic way a couple of years ago. And actually in the flesh, too! oh! Maybe now Yugi could actually introduce him to people! Instead of, you know, switching personalities at some crazy intense end of the world card game, or whatever.
Oh, wait, wait, back up for a second, he was asking him something, wasn't he? He should probably get on answering that instead of just standing there smiling like a 4th grader. He could worry about all of the stuff they could do together a little later. Hopefully. If this whole being back thing was permanent? This is confusing.
Tumblr media
"W-Well, things sort of settled down, for the most part... I heard Kaiba's making it in the amusement park business! And yeah! I'm actually taking some college classes now. I still live with grandpa, though... Oh! And I usually meet up with Jou and the others on the weekends! We sort of have this weekly game night thing, which is pretty cool."
Tumblr media
⊰ ★ ⊱ — And so the Spirit of the Millennium Puzzle dipped his head, a small smile forming at lips. Though he appeared to be cool and calm, but in truth, that relieved smile edging at his partner’s cheeks had brought the Pharaoh to his knees! The beginning departure of the haunting depression which surfaced upon the King’s arrival… Finally, was this their start?
Wait, their start? Where was the Pharaoh wondering with that ideal? Mentally, he pushed that thought way. Yet, oddly enough, the idea appeared to linger. What was their’s anyways? With no chain to bound them, nothing which truly held them together, indeed, what was their’s? It was cruelly hilarious, how contrasting Yuugi appeared without the puzzle. But those thoughts, were not to be made known. The Pharaoh were to take no chance to summon grief to Yuugi.
"I’m curious, Aibou. What happened since my departure? With Jounouchi-kun, Honda-kun…. Anzu. And school! Have you graduated?" Little inquires, to help shift the mood. Yuugi’s life, the time which past after their long separation, what exactly happened? The thought of his partner ramble on and on made the former king smile.
To share memories once again… That’s what the Pharaoh looked forward to the most.

Suddenly, the fact that he'd been worried about coming to see Anzu seemed even sillier than it had a few minutes prior when he'd been waiting for her to answer the door. After all, things were quickly back to the way they always were; that classic pair of friends on any classic sitcom. Well, any good classic sitcom. It was a bit of a relief from all the change that he'd been going through recently, to be completely honest. Not to say he wasn't happy about the few college classes he was taking- or about his part time job. They were both fun in their own ways, but he missed this. Sitting down with Anzu and talking about nothing in particular because they were kids. They were young, free, and didn't have to worry about too much of that real world stuff. So even they weren't boring old high school students anymore, it was nice to know they could still talk and hang out like they used to.
Whoops, there he was, getting lost in his thoughts again. He chirped a quick "Really? Sweet!" in Anzu's direction a few seconds too late. He seemed to be zoning out more and more lately. He wondered for a brief moment when that started? It probably picked up once they put the Pharaoh's soul to rest- it was much easier to think to yourself when you didn't have two souls jammed into the same body. Then again, he seemed to remember that problem of his causing him trouble in elementary school, too. Maybe it was a hereditary sort of thing? His Grandfather spaced out sometimes. His mother didn't really, though. It probably skipped a generation, he decided.
He also decided that he should really start concentrating on not doing whatever this possibly hereditary trait caused him to do, because the amount of time Yugi perceived Anzu to be gone didn't make any sort of sense to him. Maybe he wasn't sleeping enough and that's why he was so bad with zoning out latel- Okay, no. Don't think about that. We're not doing that. So back to real life, Yugi couldn't help but laugh a bit at the fact that Anzu kicked her feet up on the table like that. How was it that, between the two of them, she was the tough one. Wow, wait, back up for a second, did he just relate a girl putting her feet on a table with the word 'tough'? What a wimp.
"Well!" He started off- enthusiastic as per protocol, opening his can of soda and taking a sip before putting it a safe distance away from Anzu. She probably wouldn't care if it got spilled, but Yugi wasn't as sure about how her mother would feel. Better play it safe. "I got accepted into this cool ancient Egyptian class and we're learning about hieroglyphs! I'm not too good at reading them yet, but I can write my name in them, so that's pretty cool!" Or more like awesome. Super totally awesome beyond reason. But let's try our best not to be a complete nerd here.
"Grandpa's a little sore about the shop recently, though." A slight pause accompanied by a little, awkward scratch to the back of his neck. "He keeps trying to get me to work there but I got a job somewhere else since Grandpa's idea of payment..." He didn't bother to continue once he trailed off. It wasn't hard to guess that he didn't offer much.
She was glad that Yuugi hadn’t changed, because it still meant it was absolutely impossible to be in a bad mood around him. Not that she had a reason to be. But even back when they were kids, it was Yuugi who always managed to make her feel better about whatever she had been upset about (stupid things; like unrequited crushes, parents fighting, and hormonal teenage boys ogling her assets during gym class). He was all smiles and youthful joviality, and sometimes Anzu could swear up and down he’d found the secret to ageing backwards. Or at the very least stopping time in its tracks and remaining young forever.
When Yuugi enters her tiny living room, lugging a bag full of what she knows is a ton of games, she can’t help the smile that forms. Same old, predictable Yuugi. His question about soda, though, brings her back to the present and she shoots him a thumbs up. "You’re in luck. Mom just went to the store last night so we’ve got a brand new case. Gimme a minute and I’ll grab you one." She leaves him for a moment, entering the kitchen with its light yellow walls and cheery atmosphere.
The yellow had been her mother’s idea in a bout of creativity that insisted a new colour for the kitchen (from its previous drab grey walls) would make everything brighter and more inviting. She didn’t know about the inviting part, but it was certainly brighter. Rummaging in the refrigerator, she grabbed two cans of soda and shut the door with her hip before moving back into the living room. "Here you go," she handed him one of the cans, and then popped the top on her own before taking a sip.
"So!" she says finally, propping her feet up on the coffee table, because manners be damned, and she knew her mother didn’t actually care. "What have you been up to lately? Has the game shop been busy?" She really should make a more concerted effort to go down there once in a while. Both to see Yuugi and his grandfather, even if the latter still had a tendency to hit on her like he was still in his twenties and not bordering geriatric.

And what do you know, he was starting to get uneasy. Maybe asking to hear ghost stories from two occult-lovers wasn't the best idea after all. He thought it'd be cool to hear about, and he guessed it was, sort of, but mostly he would just have a harder time falling asleep tonight. And he might have a nightmare. Maybe two.
"I-I'm probably not as knowledgeable about this stuff as you guys are, but uh... do you really think it's a good idea to use ghosts to pull pranks on your brother like that?" It felt so so weird referring to him as Bakura's brother. Jeez, he was never going to get used to this. "I mean, aren't they usually evil?"
I mean honestly. From the sound of things they got into loads of trouble. Or more like Bakura got them into loads of trouble. More trouble than it was worth, probably.
"Well, one time I was playing around with my oujia board, and I accidently summoned a spirit! But it was really nice, y’know? They helped me play pranks on ‘kura all day that day! It was fun!" Ryou grinned at his brother, who sighed and rolled his eyes. "Fun? For you, maybe. That day sucked."
Ryou giggled, giving both his brother and Yugi a double thumbs up and a mischievous grin. Bakura only rolled his eyes again at his brother. “Ryou has this bad habit of summoning spirits in our house. And half of them aren’t nearly as friendly as that one. Gets annoying.”
"Plus, one time I summoned a poltergeist in our house…I spent the rest of the day fixing the mess it made…" Ryou admitted, laughing rather sheepishly now. "They make such a mess…"

Yugi released a small but deep breath once Bakura apologized. He really didn't take teasing very well, did he? He should probably get better at that, now that he thought about that. I mean, that probably only made him seem like more of a kid than he already did. Oh- Oh wait, he was going on.
"W-Well, Grandpa's not all bad." Jeez, Bakura was so good at twisting words around like that. And even though Yugi knew he was joking around, he couldn't help but stumble over his words in an attempt to defend himself. Even if Bakura was just joking. Jeez, what a complicated kid. "He's just a little too intense when it comes to that game store of his, I guess." Honestly, he acted like it was the end of the world when Yugi so much as saw a commercial for a game that wasn't sold in his shop, even if he didn't say anything about wanting to get it. It was almost laughable, really. Okay, yeah, now he was laughing a little. "Okay, I guess I betrayed him a little."
After School Reunion
Ryo laughed, hard, at his friend, he almost had to hold his sides- but he refrained himself. …How cute Yugi was being….oh that was adorable! It was so much fun to tease his friend. Especially when it was so easy to get him flustered. He dropped his GameMaster persona- he couldn’t keep it up when he found it so funny…
"I’m sorry Yugi.." he manged to stopped laughing then. "I was only joking- I mean you didn’t mean to betray him! And if that was how he paid you then he had it coming." he was only joking, but Ryo put on a sickeningly sweet smile for him to make the poor short duelist think he was being honest. he just had to mess with him a little. Just how he messed with Jounouchi about ghost, and his various wounds- he had to tease Yuugi as well. He would do it to all of them as soon as he found their weakness….what a horrible friend he was.

"Oh! H-Hey Judai. Just Yugi is fine, really..." Man, it still felt so wrong whenever anyone used the "san" honorific when referring to him. It was just sort of a weird change from what he was used to since everyone he knew had a tendency of treating him like a little kid. And it probably didn't help that he acted like one, too.
Either way, it was nice to see Judai again. Especially since he hadn't been expecting it! Surprise encounters like this were one of his favorite things in the world.
"Anyway, how have you been? It's been a pretty long time, right?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
" Oy! Yugi-san!" Judai greeted happily as he spot the King of Duelists

Yugi let out a huge sigh of relief when the Pharaoh spoke again, pulling one trembling hand away from the other but leaving the other one in place. Actually touching the other felt... weird, yeah, but also nice somehow, even if his skin was sort of cold. He should probably let go of him now that he was more emotionally stable but the assurance that he was really there- really real- was something he needed to hold onto for at least a little longer.
After all, the last time they saw each other? The last time they'd had actually skin contact? That had... Well, hopefully he wouldn't have to worry about losing him this time, even if it was a little selfish to wish for that. It was okay to be a little selfish sometimes, right? Besides, Yugi's excessive worrying had only done harm at this point. And the other had even said that he'd missed talking to him! Thank God Yugi wasn't alone about that.
It took him a few deep breaths, but soon Yugi decided he was fit enough to speak again. Without crying this time. I mean, tears were when something sad happened. It was something people just needed to do sometimes, sure, but Yugi would rather save his tears for some other time. This was supposed to be happy, right?
Tumblr media
"Y-Yeah." Just the one word at first, followed by a relieved smile; void of nerves this time. Although, with the two of them here like this, it almost made Yugi forget about everything that had happened to him after the spirit's departure. But compared to everything that had happened to him after that? The classes he'd taken here and there, the games he'd played, even graduating high school seemed to pale in comparison to everything he'd been through with the Pharaoh.
Tumblr media
⊰ ★ ⊱ — Confident amethyst orbs widened in shock, the sensation of his partner’s hand in his, hell, the touch of his partner was enough to throw back the Pharaoh in an complete state of awe. During his time of in the puzzle, with Yuugi by his side, he was never granted the chance to even lie a finger upon him. Well, except for that time where the spirit had his last duel, when Yuugi…
A slight shake of his head, as the Pharaoh took a grip on Yuugi’s hand, his cold fingers absorbing the warmth his partner emitted. Amethyst orbs flickered, relieved to be dragged out of the piercing state of solitude. 'Please don't go.' Oh, the Nameless King couldn’t even begin to express how badly he wanted to hear those words slip past his partner’s lips. With his free hand, the Pharaoh gently brushed away the clingy tear upon the corner of Yuugi’s adorning lavender orbs.
"I-I won’t. If that’s what you wish… Then here I shall stay." He told, a soft smile curling at the corners of his lips. His partner wanting him to stay, without the slightest bit of insinuation, caused the King’s doubt and fear to vanish. Cupping the teen’s cheek, he found himself gazing admiringly upon his partner.
"… Shall we sit and talk? It’s been awhile, I bet so much as happened. … Plus, I miss chatting with you, Aibou." He admitted, as a sense of warmth flooded throughout his veins. His partner reassured him of acceptance, and the Nameless King wanted to express the same. To remove his sadness, and the aggressive sense of quaking fear… That’s what the spirit wanted.
His partner’s happiness, was what the Pharaoh strived for.

Finally! Oh man, this was going to be so awesome. It didn't matter if the display wasn't anything all that big or glamorous. It was something one of his friends had made, and that was enough for him to want to see it as soon as possible.
And he did his best not to pout when the other offered to pay for him, honestly he did, but despite his best efforts, the slightest hint of a petulant expression still managed to show itself on his face.
"It's fine, really! I've been meaning to go to the museum for a while, anyway. I like to look at the Egyptian exhibit every once in a while, even though nothing ever really changes." But then again, maybe letting the other pay would put him at ease a bit?
"Well, I guess you can pay if you want, but if you do, I'll definitely have to pay you back somehow." Like with food or something. Oh! Or maybe they could go to the arcade!
Ryou finally nodded, agreeing to Yugi’s offer, “Ok let’s do it,” Yugi was right, it had been a long time since had hung out together, and the former Ring Keeper couldn’t help but always enjoy the company of Yugi, even if a certain thief forbid it.
"At least let me pay for you," he offered as he started walking with Yugi, headed towards the museum, "it’s only fair, since you’re doing this just to see my work,"

And just like that, all of Yugi's initial worries were gone. No more worrying if he'd upset Bakura or any of that silly stuff. Which was great, because now he could just catch up with an old friend without being so weird and nervous about it! But not really. Because now Yugi was far more worried about how flustered Bakura's reply had managed to make him. So here he was, scratching awkwardly at the back of his neck and doing his best not to look too embarrassed; a task that he wasn't exactly excelling at.
"N-No, it wasn't anything like that, I swear." Despite the fact that that is exactly how his grandfather reacted about the whole ordeal. What a drama queen, right? "It's just that, uh. W-Well, they actually pay me where Grandpa's idea of payment is more like a free pack of cards every so often. W-Which is great and all, don't get me wrong, but working with family's hard, y'know? Grandpa can be a little, um... He's just a lot to deal with sometimes, I guess." Nailed it.
After School Reunion
Ryo had to laugh at that, he could almost see Yugi’s grandpa going on with dramatic behavior about it. The old man did have a way of expressing himself- he just couldn’t help but laugh a little at thought of it.
"I’m sorry it’s just-" he let out another brief moment of laughter. "Oh wow. You betrayed him. How very un-yugi-like of you.” He smiled at his friend, it was just too funny. Yugi going to work at game-shop that wasn’t his grandfathers. “it’s the videos that lured you away and corrupted you isn’t?” he completely changed his expression- going into his game-master mode as he called. Looking at him with completely seriousness and wavering it for moment. As if Yugi was going to be punished for his crimes against his elder.

"Alright..." That sounded innocent enough, right? Actually, maybe "innocent" wasn't the best word. It sounded... harmless enough? That didn't quite fit either, but it was closer to what he was going for, at least. I mean, he couldn't do anything too bad if they just went on one of those crazy spiritual puzzle journeys. He hoped. I mean, all of those crazy traps behind each door had to stop him from doing anything extreme.
Yugi just hoped he wouldn't have to be the one opening any of those doors. He didn't really know what would happen to him if he died while he was in there, and he really didn't want to know, either. Especially with the possibility that if that were to happen his soul might just... sort of get trapped in there like the Pharaoh's had.
New worries aside, he was starting to feel pretty confident about the rest of the situation, at the very least. He was starting to understand what was going on, a bit. And despite the fact that he was dead sure he'd lose to this guy in any sort of fight, at least he'd stopped stuttering! And Bakura needed him, didn't he? Well, maybe not, but it sounded like he did. Which would probably assure Yugi's safety for a while if it was true.
But if they were going into the puzzle...
Tumblr media
"H-How do we do this, again?" Ugh, just when he thought he was done stumbling over his words like that. He really had no idea how this was going to work, though. The last time multiple people did this they all had to hold hands and, well. If he had to hold hands with this guy is life might actually be in danger. Okay, you know what, he should probably ask about that.
"We don't have to hold hands, do we?" Why did he have to sound like such a wimp? It was bad enough that he was a huge wimp, but why did he need to make that fact about himself so obvious? Especially to Bakura?
The teen knew so little about the items, Bakura could have made up a story about the puzzle and he would be left believing him. Everything Bakura said stroke doubt within Yuugi and that become more and more obvious. Soon he would doubt his very own actions with Bakura even having to do a damned thing about it.
But his trust was still something Bakura was far from gaining. He didn’t expect it to be that easy so he was prepared for the gnomes little, nagging questions. "Why, I can tell you what I’m going to do with it." He smirked, almost smiled as far as the spirit was capable of smiling without making it look like murderous thoughts had began to gather within his mind.
"You have seen how the puzzle looks on the inside, haven’t you? All these doors and different paths. Somewhere, behind one of these doors we might be able to find what we’re looking for. Only because the Pharaoh left doesn’t mean that his memories inside the puzzle vanished." He  tilted his head, folding his arms after he had given Yuugi an explanation that left no doubts or questioning. There was nothing he could say against Bakura’s arguments for he lacked the knowledge to do so.
Tumblr media
"So the puzzle will never leave your grasp. We’re simply taking a look inside." Bakura sounded rather amused, just waiting for Yuugi to realize that Bakura was right in every way. He would hand the spirit the puzzle, the item he had tried to protect so fiercely, it was a sweet irony.

Yugi kind of wanted to point out that Ryo was pretty weird, too, what, with the way he kept speaking about himself in the third person like that, but he managed to hold back any comment about that. The last thing he wanted to do was be rude to the guy, right? Especially since he'd... sort of already seemed to have messed up a whole lot. You'd think he'd be used to talking to people by now, but, well...
He was honestly pretty used to having the Pharaoh around to help him with these sorts of things. Talking to close friends was one thing. Jounouchi and Anzu were easy to talk to, and Bakura usually was, too, but this was a pretty unique situation, wasn't it? Jeez, this was even worse than talking to a stranger! He found himself wondering what the Pharaoh would do if he were still here. (He couldn't come up with anything.) Well, at least Ryo had asked his name. He could build off of that, right?
"Yugi! M-My name's Yugi. I stayed up sort of late last night organizing some trading cards, but I'm fine besides that! I-I'm really sorry, honestly."
"….you’re kinda weird." Ryo stated, well he was. What he was saying was confusing- not mention the child, or at least he assumed he was child, look pretty odd. Weird hair, and stuff. Ryo wasn’t one to judge though, or at least not aloud to the person he met. "Ryo think you’re really confused…"
Maybe he was hungry because he didn’t eat enough food, and waht is way the person was confused, that would make sense. Maybe it was lack of sleep? Of course Ryo didn’t automatically go tot the fact that this as a person from another universe, like it should have. He knew that where real…but it didn’t click in his head just yet. “Are you hungry or sleepy? Ryo get’s confused when he’s like that.”
"What’s you name?" He tried asking for the person name, mainly to see if they knew it themselves- that is what you asked confused people right? Or at least that was how it worked on TV.

Oh no. Oh no. This wasn't really happening, was it? Maybe if he closed his eyes and opened them again he'd realize that this was just some crazy dream. Or more like a nightmare, honestly. Unfortunately, several blinks later, and he was still stuck in this really awkward conversation rather than laying in bed wrapped in that cool Dark Magician blanket his grandpa got him last Christmas.
"I, uh." Did he know her? She looked a little familiar, yeah, but it was more in that way when you meet a complete stranger who has some weird resemblance to someone you know. Maybe the Pharaoh had known her? Yugi knew most of the people he had, sure, but there were those few months before Yugi was aware of his existence, so maybe they'd met each other back then? Ugh, this was so confusing. "I-I'm really sorry, I don't know what I did to you, but um..." The Pharaoh hadn't like. Killed anyone she knew, had he? He did set that guy on fire that one time. But what was he supposed to say to her, yeah, hi, I'm very sorry if the spirit that used to possess me hurt you in any way? Jeez.
"Could you just... tell me who you are, m-maybe? I uh. I've sort of met a lot of people..." Nailed it.
Hagako was on her way to the library to do some quiet reading for the day, at least until Ryuzaki got out of work. Normally she would put on some sort of disguise, or at least wear contacts for the day, so she wouldn’t be recognized, but she never saw anyone at the library that played Duel Monsters.
She was two blocks from arriving at her destination before she was interrupted by Yugi. Hagako turned to look at him, her face immediately scrunching into an expression of disgust. “Know me? You pretty much destroyed my reputation and life, and now you don’t even recognize me?”

Here it was. He was asking for the puzzle. Damn it, what was he supposed to do? He couldn't just hand it over. What if he just took it and ran? Or did something... I don't know, evil with it! Why did everything about Bakura have to be so mysterious? At least when he'd been dealing with Marik's alternate personality he'd known what he was dealing with. His intentions had been straightforward, at the very least. Strange and chaotic, sure, but there hadn't been any of this confusion. Not on this level, at least.
But what he was saying made sense, and that was the worst thing about it. The puzzle could help them figure out something, right? Even if the Pharaoh's spirit wasn't there anymore, well. It seemed to have some sort of power, even if Yugi didn't know how to use it. All of the other Millennium Items could do something, after all. Even the ones without spirits inhabiting them!
Yugi took a deep breath before gingerly taking a step backwards. That probably wouldn't help his case, especially in the intimidation department, but he had to keep himself together, and that task was becoming harder and harder as this conversation went on.
Tumblr media
"I-I can't just give it to you." Saying it outloud... it made him feel even less sure about it. "I mean, I'm not stupid. I want to help, honestly, but-" But what? The sooner they could get this over with the better, right? "...What are you gonna do with it?" Maybe if he explained it a little more... Maybe then he could figure out what he was supposed to do.
Bakura - much unlike Yuugi - was more than pleased about this coincidental meeting. All he had sense was a faint hint of sadness and fear, who would have thought that it belonged to the only mortal that could bring him to the other items? To him that was prove enough that it was the spirits destiny to re-open the gates to the underworld and plunge this world into eternal darkness. Just like it was the Pharaoh’s destiny to return to the spirit world so this realm was vulnerable.
He almost expected another, timid attempt to sound intimidating as Yuugi spoke up. But all the boy was wheezing out of his lungs, in a pitiful stammer, was a request Bakura could not complain about. In fact - he preferred it this way.
Tumblr media
"If you want to return the ring to my host, then you can do so. Like I said, I will have no use for the ring once I’m gone and he seems to hold this item just as dear as you’re holding your puzzle." He couldn’t keep a sneer from escaping him as he stared down at Yuugi and just to make him doubt his decision, Bakura tapped a finger against the golden surface of the ring. "After all, the memories that are connected to this item are not only bad ones. i must know, I have seen them all.”
His eerie voice dropped in sound and melted into another low chuckle. Then Bakura rose his head to take a quick  look around the darkness. "It’s not about where we start, it’s about what we start with." His eyes fell back on Yuugi, this time less errie and taunting but more serious. "I need to take a look at the puzzle before I can search for the other items. The puzzle might still hold secrets that could help to get this little hunt done with faster."

Despite how happy Yugi was about all this- about the fact that, even though the younger didn't know who he was, he was still able to see Atem again after everything was said and done- there was still a thing or two he should ask, shouldn't he?
Nothing that he wouldn't know the answer to, of course, even if Yugi was pretty curious about those things. Like how was he here, and all of that. But he should probably ask-
"Where are your parents, Atem?" God, it still felt weird saying that name. Yugi was far more used to calling him things like 'Pharaoh' or 'The other me.'
Atem watched the other curiously and waited for the other to say something. He started to frown a tiny bit, thinking he might have upset the stranger somehow.
He watched the other kneel down and his smile slowly returned from what the other said.
"Okay! Yugi? That's a really neat name! Really? Yay!" He giggled happily and clapped his small hands together. He was too happy now!

Oh no, not this again. What was it with running into versions of his friends that didn't know him lately? Like, how was he even supposed to react to something like that? Well, here goes nothing. Or everything. Probably some sort of combination of the two.
"O-Oh, um! Sorry! My mistake, I-I thought you were someone else." No, wait, that wouldn't work. He'd said his name. It'd be one thing if Bakura was one of those names that a million people had, bit it was fairly unique, wasn't it? And were there even any other kids their age that had white hair like that?
