This is just my thoughts on the new chapter. Lots of ramblings to get this off my chest.

So, hell, I did not expect Mo’s pierced ears have a whole dark history behind it.

As someone who wrote a whole analysis on Mo’s earrings, I did have some thoughts on the reason why he had pierced ears, yet never wear any pair of earrings in the canon story (last year of junior high school). After all, Mo did seem to be wary of needles during this hospital scene:

(It might also be for entertainment too, with him wriggling so hard like that, who knows lol?)

The ears are also sensitive parts on the human body. So, if Mo is wary of needles, why would he have his ears pierced?

Back then, I put it down to his style and preference. That maybe he just wants to look cool, though, it’s a bit out of character since Mo doesn’t care that much about his appearance towards his schoolmates.

The new chapter got me well, and now I have to rethink this whole earrings thing. Probably, just probably, the reason he was frightened of the needles was due to the She Li incident in the past.

Mo is being so reluctant regarding the incident here. He must be uncomfortable recalling the past, but still chooses to reveal it to He Tian. It’s nice to see that kind of development in him, since usually, he would refuse to let anyone interfere with him.

A Yes/No question from Tian. Mo’s answer was neither; he avoids Tian’s question with an answer along the line of “It’s already a story of the past, don’t worry about it”.

He could have gone with a “No” (it’s consensual, he did it for me when we were friends/acquaintances, but then our relationship went awry at some point); or a “Yes” (he forced me to do it without my consent, it freakin hurts and I don’t want to recall that day). Mo’s answer was in between, as if he wants to brushes off He Tian, but also wants to open up about it; he wants somebody to listen to his story.

On Mo’s relationship with She Li, I’m rereading the old chapters to see if we can get any information from them. The story of Mo Guan Shan is unraveling through those chapters there:

It’s just my speculation here, but I do think that: The reason for Mo’s curt attitude in the story, it can be traced back to most people, especially She Li’s treatment towards him. The boy has been isolated in the past; bullied and also humiliated, that it creates a deep scar in his heart. It is, to the point that he cannot find company with anyone, he just keeps pushing everyone away. That creates a bad reputation for Mo.

The way Mo speaks with She Li, it’s considerably different from the way he speaks with his schoolmates. Somewhat more condescendingly, as if he doesn’t dare to put up resistance towards the snake.

“Are you doing this so you can use me later?” Somehow, I get the feeling that Mo has been taken advantage of and (quite severely) backstabbed in the past, that the boy is now very cautious towards She Li. Yet, he is only to be used by that malicious snake again.

She Li seems to have some knowledge about Mo prior: An isolated and bullied boy living with a single mother, struggling to pay off their debts. An easy victim. Mo cannot asks for help from anyone, and definitely doesn’t want to create more burden for his mom. He struggles and suffers alone.

Man, I don’t want to imagine how f*cked up She Li is. Who the hell visits a patient in the hospital bringing a frickin knife; throw a full can of Coke from the top floor down the yard, aiming at somebody’s head, then brushing it off with that kind of reason. If it’s not to intended to hurt Mo’s physically (and psychologically), then I don’t know what it is.
