Multimedia Adaptation Reflection
Over the past four weeks, I had the pleasure of adapting “The Chorus Girl” by Anton Chekhov into a short film called The Blasé Girl. Chekhov’s story is about a chorus girl by the name of Pasha, who finds herself in a difficult situation when her lover's wife, shows up to her house, confronts her about their relationship, and makes demands for Pasha to give her the gifts her husband has given to her.
In my adaptation, I decided to tell the story from the wife’s point of view, instead of Pasha’s. I also added in another character, Mallory, for a little comedic relief and support for the wife. My overall story is about a wife, Silvia, who is fed up with her husband’s ongoing affair with Pasha. After finding out her husband gifted his mistress with her great aunt’s earrings, Silvia goes on a mission to get her earrings back, while seeking revenge in the process.
When creating my adaptation, it was important for me to realize the differences in how the narrative story was written and told, and the changes I needed to incorporate within my script to give it more visual elements for the film. Because the original story was told with no background information about the characters and how their situation came to be, I had to incorporate that information through dialog and actions within my script. It was important that I kept the essential story of the film aligned with the basic foundation of the original work, while also modernizing it for today’s audiences. It was definitely tough, but I’m so glad I got the opportunity to go through this experience for the first time.
Most of the experiences I’ve had in writing up to this point are creating my own original film works and writing for reality TV. So, writing an adaptation really took me out of my comfort zone. I don’t think I aspire to adapt films as my full-time job, but when the opportunity can’t be turned down, I will use all the knowledge I’ve gained in this class to create a new and revised modernized version of the original story that is compelling and interesting for audiences to watch and enjoy.

Episodic & Serial Writing Reflection
Over the course of this month, I had the opportunity to learn about Web Series creation and how to write a Web Series Pilot. This experience really opened my eyes to another type of writing that I was not privy to prior to the class. Web Series have become very popular in the industry, and I’m very grateful for the knowledge I have acquired over the course of this month.
My goal as a writer greatly aligns with the things I have learned in this class. What I loved about creating and writing for a Web Series, is that I got a more in depth look at what it takes to do what I want to do in the future. With what I’ve created this month, I plan to continue writing and perfecting my craft. I also plan to film the content I've created this month and put it out for the world to watch and enjoy.
I will say this experience, writing for a Web Series, was a little different from my previous writing experiences. Most of the writing I have done up to this point has been for film or reality television. This class was the first time I worked with an episodic structure where there are intros and tags and the acts are written and broken up right on the page. These aspects are much different from writing for film and reality TV, but I’m so glad that I now know how to write for/in an episodic structure/format as well.
I can definitely see myself writing for a Web Series for a living. With that goal in mind, I plan to finish writing my Web Series Bowl|Over and film it. I also plan to apply to as writing jobs as possible to get more experience in the field. I plan to continue to practice what I have learned and push to reach my goal as a writer in this industry. I really enjoyed this writing process and I look forward to using what I learned this month as I continue through this program and into my career as a writer.

Mastery Journal for Character Creation & Development
Premise: Love for others requires sacrifice.
Protagonist’s inner journey: Thomasgoes from reliant to independent.
Protagonist’s outer goal: Thomas wants to go on tour with his music.
Antagonist’s outer goal: Gary wants to retire.
Antagonist’s opportunity: Gary has the chance to grow from overbearing to understanding.
Thomas has an Enneagram Type Nine: The Mediator Personality Type, so he naturally focusses on others and the external environment. He constantly thinks of others and their feelings and often puts them before his own. Because Thomas is usually the mediator in his family and usually suggests and makes decisions for others, his personality type makes it even harder for him to make a decision or himself.
Thomas is very supportive of his dad and the company, so he struggles to find a way to make himself and his dad happy. Just to keep the peace between them, Thomas doesn’t voice what he really wants to do with his life, in fear of making his dad and siblings upset. He knows that no matter what his decision is, he will hurt someone’s feelings (either his dad’s or his brother’s). His biggest struggle in reaching his goal is not upsetting anyone while speaking his truth. His personality type alone is what makes him unique, but it also posses as one of his biggest challenges to overcome in order to fulfill his inner journey.
Thomas Leaf is the son of Gary Leaf, owner, and CEO of Leaf Eats, one of the most popular vegan restaurants in Oklahoma. Thomas is a triplet and the family mediator, so he’s often the person who the family goes to for an answer to their problems. Thomas has been working at Leaf Eats for 8 years as the District Manager, but he wants to leave the company to follow his music career dreams. Although his passion is music, he likes the fact that the company pays for a lot of his necessities (he lives above one of the restaurants in a very nice loft and drives a company car, both paid for by the company).
As Gary’s retirement approaches, he wants Thomas to take over the daily operations as owner and CEO of the company, leaving Thomas’ two brothers in envy of him. Although Thomas is honored that his father wants him to take his place, he feels indifferent about what she should do. On one hand, he feels like he can’t fully support himself as an independent musician and he owes it to his dad to take over because of all he’s done for him. On the other hand, Thomas feels like he has to follow his dreams and be his own person, and one of his brothers can easily take the position. Thomas loves his family and values them so much, that he thinks of sacrificing all he ever wanted just to make his dad happy.

Business of Film

“Creativity is intelligence having fun.” -Albert Einstein
Over the course of this month, I have learned so much about myself and my craft. My original objectives for this course were to: market my film effectively, create a mock business plan and learn how to negotiate a deal. I am proud to say that I did indeed learn about all three of these elements and much, much more. My Electronic Press Kit (EPK) for my film, Bowl Over, turned out really great, I have knowledge about the business side of pitching a film and I now know how to negotiate the best deal possible for my services.
Over the past month, I have learned how to brand and market myself. I learned that by expressing what makes me unique and providing visuals of the type of work I can do, will only make me that much more marketable. I also learned how to craft and create a business résumé to stand out. I learned that by making my résumé cater to a company’s specific needs, I will be able to better appeal to those searching for qualified applicants. I also learned how important it is to market a film in order to make money and get others excited about my project.
I will be able to use what I learned in this class for the rest of my life. When applying for a job, I will be able to make my résumé stand out and get an interview. I will also be able to use the knowledge I gained from doing the film festival case study assignment when searching for compatible film festivals to submit my films. The professional portfolio site will also help me in my future because I will be able to just send a link to people with all my work in one spot. With this, I will be able to showcase my talents to prospective clients all while getting my name out. I loved that everything in this class was centered around what I like, want and aspire to be. All in all, I believe this course was one of the most crucial courses for my future.
As I reflect on my time here at Full Sail University, it is bittersweet. Since month one in this program, I have been so eager to learn as much as I can to better myself as a filmmaker. Each month in this program expanded on the one before, and with that, the coursework got more and more intense. Oftentimes, I wanted to quit or take a break from the intense schedule, but I had so many people in my corner cheering me on, and now, I can say I made it through! I have met so many amazing people here at Full Sail and this experience is one I will cherish forever.
