How to Clean a Tilt Sensor
I’ve had a lot of furbies (all from the same ebay listing) with wonky tilt sensors (and other corroded metal parts), and from what I’ve found, there are two (or possibly more) different types of tilt sensor. Only one of the types can be opened for cleaning, and the other cannot. They will vary in color, but it’s the shape that matters. Please, only do this if your Furby has an intermittent tilt sensor. It is not a part of general maintenance and repeated cleaning may damage the tilt sensor.

The tilt sensor on the left can be opened, and the tilt sensor on the right cannot.
Additionally, you’ll be working very close to the circuit board on this one: Avoid touching the board with your bare hands or metal tools as much as possible, and do not leave batteries in your Furby.
First, you’ll want to get the wiring for the speaker out of your way. Be careful with all of these wires, but especially with the very thin wires that connect the tilt sensor to the circuit board. The amount of hot glue in this area varies furb-to-furb, and you may have to do some cautious pulling, tearing, or cutting to get the wires free.
Use a flat-tipped tool (I used a flathead screwdriver) to pry the top or bottom (depending on the type of plug) of the plug out of the socket, and peel the wires free from any hot glue. If your Furby has wires that are all the same color, mark the first wire on one end so you can plug it back in correctly (the order of the wires matters! Don’t plug it back in backwards!)

Wedging a speaker plug out by the top edge. Alternate which edge you push up from to avoid warping the socket.

Wedging a speaker plug out from the bottom. Work your tool in horizontally, then twist, alternating which side you lift from to avoid warping the socket.
Once you’ve moved the speaker wires out of the way, clear the hot glue out from around the upper two metal pieces (contacts) sticking out of the tilt sensor and off the top. The top of the tilt sensor may have been slightly melted to keep it from coming off– you should be able to easily cut or break through the melted areas, as the plastic has become fairly brittle with age.
Then, carefully slide a thin flat tool (I switched to my craft knife) between the top of the middle contact and the bottom of the tilt sensor’s lid. Lift it to break the seal, and then gently work it off with your fingers.

Lifting off the lid.

The underside of the lid.
The tilt sensor itself is built kind of like a sandwich. From top-to-bottom, it has the upside-down sensing contact, a donut-shaped contact, a ball bearing, and another donut-shaped contact. These should all be a mirror-finished brassy or gold color when clean.

Tilt sensor with the lid and top donut-shaped contact removed. the ball bearing and bottom donut-shaped contact are still inside.

Tilt sensor with the lid, top donut-shaped contact, and ball bearing removed. The bottom donut-shaped contact cannot be removed, as it is connected directly to the circuit board.
You can use rubbing alcohol or contact cleaner to clean these parts. I use q-tips to clean the donut-shaped contacts and rub the ball bearing around in a lint-free cloth. Once they’re clean and dry, re-assemble the sandwich and plug the speaker back in! Once you’re sure you’ve put everything back correctly, use a little hot glue to hold the lid down again.

WAHHH THIS IS AWESOME!!! GNAWBONE AND I SAY THANK YOU!!

@rayn--cloud I hope I captured his energy, along with the autumn-y spirit that's been in the air since August 1st!!! He's so precious!! I really wanted to find some bone imagery to go along with him, since you mentioned vulture culture, but all the pictures had a really dark vibe, and he looks so chill and gentle, none of them fit the vibe I feel he likely has with bones (more of a caretaker and gentle collector rather than hoarder of death, yk?) so I had to leave that aspect out. I hope you really like it!

I've never done it personally, but I think one of the reference master posts in my furby reference tag has a tutorial on how to clean it, which is how it's usually repaired!
Anyone know how to fix the tilt sensor in ‘98 furbies? My friend recently got his first furb working and his tilt doesn’t work

(Photo of CottonSwab so this actually gets seen LOL)

Fauna Facts!

Here at Purblestone Extradimensional Park, there is an assortment of Flora and Fauna you likely have not seen! That being said the Furby and it's Subspecies are no mystery to many Visitors. It's believed that Furbies themselves originate from an isolated Island in Dimension **** and were later domesticated by the people there. Over time, some individuals be them Ferals or Escaped pets made their way through the rifts into Purblestone, where they naturalized into the ecosystem. It's rare to find a regular Furby, but instead "Oddbodies" and "Long Furby" Subspecies thrived in their place. Plenty of individuals here have even evolved new and strange adaptations to better coexist with the Anomalous Phenomenon that naturally occurs within Purblestone.
That being said, Rangers strongly remind Visitors that all Furbies and Furby Subspecies not already accompanied by their owners are in fact Wild Animals and should not be messed with. While Furbies and their Subspecies are often less frightened by Visitors and can even be Docile at times, They can still react unpredictably.
All Visitors with Furbies and Their Subspecies must have them properly tagged and contained be it through leashes, harnesses, and/or travel packs.

This is Grimbles, he eats the corners of paper, hoards broken buttons, and he is quite fond of bottlecaps. He likes to introduce himself as a sock, but I suspect that he is actually a type of mimic that has chosen to imitate a furby, likely due to seeing how much love and care is shown to other furbies, as Grimbles hadn't felt love before he descended on my garden. He carries moist secrets in his fur, lives in a large sock, he traded his original name for a button, so I had to give him a new one (we're very strict that he cannot trade this one, although many fairies have came to temp him). Grimbles has taught me much, that trash is nothing more than tired treasure, that love is learned and held rather than coming spontaneously, that light doesn't have to be warm to show you where you need to go, and that life is only complicated if you make it so.
GRIMBLES MY BOY!! you are always such a joy to see on here, it brightens my day to see you come across my dash. I hope you find many many trinkets and treasures on your next walk through the woods. Perhaps a smooth round pebble
