still haven't seen the presentation (but my summer class just ended!!) but have seen the screenshots—it's just too easy to say nyss pushes everyone away hehe, def isn't all there is to it

i feel that if nyss gave up her ice, then it'd be like lily's death would have been for nothing. her ice touch in a way granted her power and hope in a bleak world even if she's still grieving over her sister. to remove it would for sure cast her out from fighting in the ravenswatch. even if her subjects were spreading rumors up to the day she left, then imagine coming right back home with nothing to show for it, not even her curse...

nyss is very dependent on the function of her actions, ykwim? like, she focuses all-in on kicking baba yaga's teeth in because she doesn't have time to grieve nor time to yap with other wardens. her actions are more important than ruminating on conversations that don't matter, at least that's how she sees things

that's where carmilla comes in. she's a conversation that doesn't matter

they're friends, sure. they have a deep respect/admiration for one another, their recruitment is tied together too, but that doesn't mean nyss places carmilla above the wellbeing of reverie, or even the emptiness that lily's death left behind

but carmilla's already seen this before, hasn't she? when she knew never to offer her blood, to let someone else becore vampire? when laura grit her teeth and wished there was something she could do? when carmilla would disagree and disagree and disagree until she didn't? when carmilla and laura fought as a pair, then joined the ravenswatch (probs in that order according to the memoirs) until she couldn't recognize laura from the monster she'd become, the monster carmilla let her become

if she's already lost her greatest love, then why would she ever let her closest friend hurt all the same?

carmilla's whole thing is being the line between monster and man, she knows damn well how power can corrupt even the purest of souls, she's experienced it herself

nyss was raised to share healing and kindness, and now that it's stripped away all she can do is focus on what she has left: a way to defend herself

girl that needs to intervene in someone else's business x girl that focuses on her mission so hard she forgets to feel

so the moment carmilla reaches out to touch nyss is a betrayal on both ends, no? carmilla, who is hurt that nyss would choose violence instead of the people that care about her. nyss, who is hurt that carmilla would ask she give up the one thing that makes her feel capable after her greatest joys were taken from her

something abt how the real deepest pain of her curse is that nyss can never indulge in the comfort of touch and physical affection again. esp because she doesn't want to find a cure. being able to use her deadly touch to fight monsters is resourceful and follows her sense of duty, but she is now defined by how her very blood is hostile because she herself should be a hostile person
