99% of what I read is angst but you know what my secret favorite fanfiction category is? Outsider POV. I love a good fic where we’re in the perspective of characters who have no idea what the fuck is going on and are stuck watching our MCs be absolutely ridiculous. I love every version of this trope. It could be mostly text based. It could be mostly social media based. As long as it checks the boxes? I’m all in. You don’t understand. I think the first one of these I read was with Sam and Dean Winchester as kids in school from the perspective of a guidance counselor. I have been ruined. I have read every fic I could find with the premise of SkyGem’s Retirement AU (Yuri On Ice). I read White Collar DC crossover fanfiction despite not knowing or caring about White Collar because I treat it like outsider POV fanfictions with a fun identity reveal element. My favorite My Hero Academia fanfiction of all time is entirely made up of social media bit and bobs (tumblr posts, twitter posts, text message chains, etc). I am currently reading a Carmen Sandiego fic like this and it is such a crack fic. It is so unserious. I can’t put it down. I am so hooked.

space battles shouldn't be star wars style dogfights. they should be like 16th century naval engagements on steroids -- huge starships circling each other in the void for days and weeks. the distances are so vast that you'll never even lay eyes on the enemy ship; they're just a blip on a radar, a variable in the firing solution calculations. battles aren't short bursts of incredible violence, they're weeks of slow-burning tension as soldiers get up and go about their duties, acutely aware that they could be blown to smithereens at any time if the negotiations happening lightyears away go awry. the minute the captain gets a go order, the missiles fly, and you will never even see the face of the person that kills you.

I wonder how much The Untamed and its source material relies on the cultural shift that has occurred between Ye Olde China and today to make us a little frustrated with Lan Xichen. So much of the criticism of him comes down to his inaction, but according to the skimming of Daoist governmental practices I’ve managed, he’s what contemporary political theorists wanted. He’s a decent personification of wu wei as it applies to governmental theory; he’s yielding, a good listener, takes his time to get the full story. He’s over reliant on those around him, but Daoist-Confucianist Legalism held that relying on trusted ministers and allies was a good thing. If anything Xichen’s flaw is that he trusts the wrong person, and even that is partially excused because his preferences are based on previous action. 

“The ruler is like a mirror, reflecting light, doing nothing”- Shen Buhai. That’s Xichen, baby! Just a mirror of a man, a mediator who brings out the best (and worst, sadly) in others.

Compared to Xichen, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are overly forward, action-oriented, and results geared. They have preferences, they have foibles. We sympathize with them because these traits are very much in vogue in modern culture, but by historical nobility standards they are bad boys (even Lan Wangji! he does a good impression of a mirror; underneath he just wants to save people and get a little snappish at public events, poor hero). Xichen is a nearly ideal ruler and sage. His flaw is that his judgement is compromised; to which he responds in a very classical manner. In-universe he’s still adored, out-of-universe a lot of the audience feels like he’s a doormat. We want more direct action than Shen Buhai does and we take it out on Xichen, who is only behaving like a well raised gentleman.

So… I just realized that I haven’t cleared my reading history on ao3 since joining in 2015 and as a result I did some fun maths

So overall I read 12850 fics (of various lengths) which means that on average I read 127 fics a month and 31 in a week.

No wonder my brain is rotten, damn
