Since we keep getting "live action" CGI remakes of already perfectly adequate animated movies, and because people need to understand that animation is a medium and not a genre, I have prepared this primer about the importance of Visual Language for Conveying Information.

Can you tell what the personalities of these two mice are?

If you can answer these questions, then you already have experience with the idea of visual language and stylistic choices being used to impart narrative meaning. If you can understand why these choices were made to impart meaning, then you can understand why animation is a medium for telling stories that has its own inherent value, and is not merely a "placeholder" for the eventual implementation of photorealistic presentation (aka "Live Action" CGI). Animation does not need to be "corrected" or "legitimized" by remaking it into the most representational simulation of observable reality.

Zolu/Luzo in Boss Luffy TV Special

I feel like this scene isn't talk about much. Although this episode isn't canon, I love how it highlights Luffy and Zoro's dynamic and their unspoken understanding.

Here, Zoro was working under Buggy to capture Vivi. At first, Luffy questions Zoro's intention. For context, Luffy and Zoro don’t know each other very well at this point, but Luffy instinctively knows Zoro isn’t a bad guy—especially since Zoro had already protected Vivi earlier.

When Luffy realized Zoro's tactics, he made this huge ass grin and play along with him (Working together to beat Buggy's crew). I love how they can easily read each other despite not knowing each other. The amount of trust and telepathic understanding between these two transcends beyond canon-verse.

Their relationship is so beautiful. It's so warm and wholesome.

Luffy looks so proud <3

In summary,

Luffy (who barely knows Zoro) never doubted him being a good guy and

Zoro (who also barely knows Luffy) trusted him to quickly understand his intention and go along with it.

oh dont overestimate me here lol ultimately i do not care what people are doing or calling themselves in their day to day lives i’m really talking about online shipping culture at the end of the day here (which is a bleed/bleeds into irl culture but I digress)

i’m not here to harass anyone about this ofc, but what you’re talking about is giving everyone the benefit of the doubt that they are intending to go beyond the gender norms, rather than trying to uphold them and i just don’t believe that lol. in my experience most of the time it’s just people still maintaining the idea that every family should have the “Mom Dad and Kids” nuclear mentality even if it’s two guys or two girls or two enbys or whatever and I think that’s dumb.

like here let me put it this way. for example, if someone sees two gay men and their first thought is to categorize one in the “mom” role and one in the “dad”, i think that’s lame and dumb and stupid and if someone did that to me i’d want to punch them 👊 that’s the sort of thing i’m mad about and i see it happen all the time when shipping characters. let me clarify cuz i think the way i said it wasn’t getting across what i meant so let me rephrase

I meant in the sense of, if someone is perceiving them the way they are canonically (aka two cis dudes) and calling one mom and one dad then that pisses me off.

The reason I mention the gender-fluid stuff is because I know a lot of people do hc them to be outside the gender binary since they’re shapeshifters and can change gender whenever they want. If that’s the case and someone flip flops all sorts of terms with them (using mom, dad, parent, etc for BOTH of them interchangeably) then I understand that.

It would probably also piss me off even more if someone genderbent only one of them to transfem, just so they could make it a het ship and call that one mom which I think is what you’re talking about.

But i’m just tired of gay ships in general getting the “ones the mom! ones the dad!” treatment, that’s basically what I’m griping about here and was trying to clarify i wasn’t referring to people who may hc them both as outside and all over the gender binary u-u👍
