Hold Me

Ethan leaned against the kitchen counter, his arms and ankles crossed as he waited impatiently for the water in the electric kettle to come to a boil. His eyes wandered over to the clock hanging on the wall and sighed. 1:26AM meant that he and Denise had another three hours of rest before they had to get ready for work.

Ethan heard the kettle click and reached for it. He poured the hot water into Denise’s ‘Winnie the Pooh’ mug and allowed the chamomile teabag to steep for a couple minutes before he added a teaspoon of Manuka honey. He carried the tea across to the bedroom, turning off the lights in the kitchen before he entered and closed the door behind him with a soft thud. His heart pinched at the sight of Denise still curled up in a ball on their bed.

It wasn’t often she suffered from stomach cramps when she was menstruating; she could usually prevent them by taking over-the-counter painkillers as soon as she got her period. But when she did suffer from stomach cramps they were severe enough to incapacitate her, and no amount of pain killers could help lessen her discomfort.

“Hey.” Ethan carefully set the cup of tea down on her bedside table then sat beside her. “I made you chamomile tea.” He rested his hand on her back, trailing it up and down in an attempt to soothe her. “Do you want to sit up and drink it, or do you not want to move from your current position?” He leaned over her, brushing her hair out of her face to gauge her discomfort from her facial expression.

“I don’t want to move…”

“That’s okay, the tea’s probably a little too hot to drink right now. You’ve taken your painkillers?” His question was answered with a weak nod. “You are not going to work today. I’ll speak with Ines and Zaid when I get to work later, get them to reassign your cases and have another resident cover your shift in the free clinic.”

“You don’t need to do that, I’ll be fine in a few hou-” Her sentence was abruptly cut short by a soft whimper. “There’s a demon inside me, Ethan…” She buried her face into her pillow and groaned incoherently, pressing her hand tighter against her stomach. “Get a scalpel and cut it out.”

“Sweetheart…” He chuckled wryly, running his fingers through her hair. “You know I’m not a surgeon. And a demon? Come on.”

“Then call Bryce…”

“You are taking the day off.”

“I can’t afford to take the day off.”

“There are other doctors at Edenbrook, Rookie. If you’re worried about your boss, I will happily call him and tell him to suck it.” There was a playfulness in his tone that elicited a light chuckle from her.

“You’re my boss.”

“You’re right, I am. As well as your boyfriend, and your ride to work. You’re not going anywhere.” He leaned over her and kissed her temple. “Is there anything I can do to ease your discomfort?”

“Can you hold me?”

“I can definitely do that.”

Denise smiled as Ethan spooned her, lacing their fingers together. She closed her eyes and enjoyed the warmth of his body against hers, the comfort of his arms around her, the rise and fall of his chest against her back. Her smile reached her eyes when he planted a soft kiss behind her left ear and whispered, “better?”

“Much.”
